The First Flutter

The faculty mixer hummed with the usual polite chatter and clinking glasses, a sea of tweed jackets and sensible heels against the warm wood paneling of the university lounge. Oriana Higgins stood near the edge of the room, her shoulder-length auburn hair pinned neatly back, her green eyes scanning the crowd with the practiced composure of a literature professor who had attended one too many of these events. Her blouse was buttoned to the collar, her skirt falling just below the knee, everything in place to project the image of the dutiful academic and devoted wife she had cultivated for years.

She sipped her wine slowly, letting the dry notes linger on her tongue as she half-listened to a colleague drone on about curriculum changes. Her mind wandered to Wilmer, her husband, who would be waiting at home with dinner already started, the same reliable routine that had defined their marriage for nearly a decade. It was comfortable. Stable. Exactly what she needed.

A shift in the room's energy pulled her attention toward the doorway. Noel Fuller entered like she owned the space, tall and commanding in a tailored black blazer over a simple white shirt, her jet-black hair pulled into a severe ponytail that accentuated the sharp lines of her face. Her piercing dark eyes swept the room with an easy confidence, full lips curved in a faint, knowing smile. The visiting artist instructor carried an athletic presence that seemed to fill every corner, drawing glances without effort.

Oriana felt an odd flutter in her chest, something she dismissed as the warmth of the wine. She turned back to her colleague, but the words blurred when a smooth voice cut through the noise behind her.

"Professor Higgins, I presume. I've heard your lectures on modernist fiction are something to behold."

Oriana turned, and there she was. Noel stood close, closer than necessary for a casual introduction, her strong hand extended. Oriana took it, the grip firm and warm, lingering a beat longer than polite. A subtle scent of sandalwood and something sharper clung to the air between them.

"Instructor Fuller," Oriana replied, her voice steady but formal. "Welcome to the department. I trust the transition has been smooth."

Noel's smile deepened, her eyes holding Oriana's with an intensity that felt almost invasive. "Smooth enough. Though I prefer to make my own impressions." She released the hand but didn't step back, her body angled so that the space between them narrowed further. The crowd seemed to fade at the edges of Oriana's awareness.

They spoke of art and literature, Noel's voice low and teasing as she described her latest installations, sensual pieces that explored desire and control. Oriana found herself leaning in despite herself, rationalizing the pull as professional curiosity. When Noel's fingers brushed lightly against Oriana's forearm to emphasize a point, the touch sent an unexpected warmth up her skin, planting the first quiet seed of something unnamed.

"You have a remarkable stillness about you, Oriana," Noel murmured, leaning closer so her whisper grazed the shell of Oriana's ear. "It makes one wonder what lies beneath all that poise."

Oriana’s breath caught, her internal voice immediately supplying the correction. She was married. Happily. Wilmer's face flashed in her mind, kind and oblivious, their life together a steady anchor against any fleeting distraction. She straightened, offering a polite smile. "My husband and I value that steadiness. It serves us well in academia."

The mention of Wilmer hung in the air, but Noel only chuckled softly, her hand returning to Oriana's arm with a light squeeze that lingered. "Of course. How fortunate for him." The words carried an under
