Arrival and the Pull of Forbidden Words
Peg Boughton stepped out of the hired car and felt the cool mountain air wrap around her like a quiet invitation. The estate rose before her, all stone and ivy, tucked away from the world behind a long winding drive. She adjusted the strap of her overnight bag on her shoulder and took in the tall windows glowing with soft light. This was not the usual academic conference. The women-only retreat promised focused discussion on literature and desire, and she had come seeking exactly that kind of intellectual sharpening.
Inside, a young attendant showed her to a modest but comfortable room on the second floor. Peg unpacked her modest wardrobe, hanging the blouses and skirts she had chosen for their propriety. She caught her reflection in the mirror and smoothed her shoulder-length auburn hair. At forty-two she still looked composed, the picture of a dutiful literature professor. The hazel eyes that stared back held the same careful restraint she carried into every lecture hall back home.
She changed into a simple navy blouse and tailored trousers before heading downstairs for orientation. The main hall was already filling with other women, all academics or writers, their conversations low and expectant. Peg found a seat near the front, notebook open, pen ready. She told herself this was simply professional development, nothing more.
The double doors at the far end opened and Sara Davis entered. Peg felt the shift in the room before she even registered the woman herself. Sara stood tall, her long raven hair falling in a sleek line down her back, her green eyes sweeping the gathering with calm authority. She wore a fitted charcoal dress that moved with her like a second skin, elegant and unmistakably sensual. When those eyes landed on Peg, something small and unnameable tightened in Peg's chest.
"Welcome," Sara said, her voice low and measured. "I am Dr. Davis. Over the next ten days we will examine the literature of forbidden desire, not as distant scholars but as women willing to confront what those texts have long asked us to keep hidden." She paused, letting the words settle. Peg noticed how the other women leaned forward almost unconsciously. She did the same.
Sara moved through the room as she spoke, never hurrying, her presence filling the space. When she stopped near Peg's row, the scent of her perfume reached Peg, something dark and warm that made her inhale a little deeper than necessary. Their eyes met again. Sara's mouth curved in the faintest smile before she continued on.
After a brief round of introductions, Sara invited everyone into the adjacent lecture room. Peg took the same forward seat she had claimed earlier. Sara dimmed the lights and brought up the first slide: a quote from a lesser-known Victorian text on female repression. Her voice took on a hypnotic cadence as she began the opening lecture.
"Consider the wife in this passage," Sara said, pacing slowly before the screen. "She performs her duties with perfect grace, yet the text hints at a hunger she cannot name. Why must we pretend such hunger is shameful?"
Peg wrote the question down, but her pen slowed. Sara's words seemed to bypass her usual academic distance and settle somewhere lower, warmer. She shifted in her seat, aware of the way the fabric of her trousers pressed against her thighs. It was nothing. Just the intensity of the speaker.
Sara's gaze found her again. "Professor Boughton, you teach similar texts. What do you make of the wife's silence?"
Peg cleared her throat. "It is a protective silence," she answered, voice steady. "Society demanded it of her."
Sara tilted her head. "And what if the silence was never truly protective? What if it was simply the only language she had been taught?"
The question lingered. Peg felt heat rise along her neck. She had prepared answers for every possible academic angle, yet this felt personal. Sara did not look away. The room seemed to narrow to that single point of contact between them.
Sara moved on, but the pull remained. Peg listened to the rest of the lecture with unusual focus, each example of literary repression striking deeper than she expected. When Sara described a scene of a woman finally acknowledging her desire for another woman, Peg's pen slipped from her fingers and rolled beneath the chair in front of her. She bent to retrieve it, cheeks warm.
By the time the lecture ended, Peg's notebook page was filled with notes she could barely recall writing. The other women filed out, murmuring to one another. Sara remained at the front, gathering her materials. Peg hesitated, then approached.
"Dr. Davis," she said, formal. "Your framing of repression was compelling. I had not considered the possibility that the silence itself might be the true subject."
Sara looked up, green eyes steady. "Most people do not, Professor Boughton. They prefer the safety of the text. You, however, seemed willing to sit with the discomfort." She stepped closer, voice dropping. "That willingness interests me."
Peg felt the words settle inside her like a small weight. She managed a polite nod. "I look forward to the discussions ahead."
"As do I," Sara replied. The smile that followed was small, private. "Rest well. Tomorrow we begin the real work."
Peg returned to her room with her pulse still slightly elevated. She sat on the edge of the bed and pressed a hand to her chest, surprised by the flutter she found there. It was only an intellectual attraction, she told herself. Sara Davis was a commanding presence. Any woman would feel the pull of that authority.
Yet when she closed her eyes, the image that rose was not of the lecture slides. It was of Sara's eyes holding hers across the room, and the quiet certainty in her voice when she had said the word "hunger." Peg exhaled slowly and reached for the phone to text her husband that she had arrived safely. The message felt oddly distant, as though she were writing it from another life already beginning to loosen its hold.
