Mic Check
Solange Christian adjusted the boom mic one last time, her fingers precise on the stand as she checked the levels on the mixing board. The studio lights hummed overhead, casting a soft glow across the soundproofed walls. She had arrived early, as usual, running through every cable and pop filter with the kind of focus that kept her productions crisp and professional. Her dark auburn hair sat tight in its bun, a few strands already threatening to escape as she leaned over the console. She bit her lower lip, eyes scanning the waveform on the monitor.
"Mic one, check," she said into the headset, her voice crisp and even. The team had cleared out for the afternoon, leaving her alone with the equipment. That suited her fine. She liked the quiet before an interview, the chance to own the space.
She tapped the second mic, the one reserved for guests. "Mic two, check." The levels held steady. Everything was ready for Edgar Patterson. The underground hypnosis artist had agreed to this session on modern desire after weeks of emails, and Solange felt the familiar spark of curiosity tighten in her chest. She wanted clean audio, honest answers, nothing more.
The door opened with a soft click. Edgar stepped inside, his lean frame moving with deliberate calm. Silver streaked through his dark hair, and his gray eyes settled on her with quiet assessment. He wore a simple dark shirt and slacks, nothing flashy, yet the stillness around him seemed to pull the air tighter.
"Solange Christian," he said, voice low and measured. "Thank you for the invitation. Your setup looks meticulous."
She extended a hand, professional. "Glad you could make it. We will start with some background on your work, then move into how hypnosis intersects with desire. Sound good?"
"Perfectly." He took the seat across from her, posture relaxed yet upright. She clipped the lav mic to his collar, her movements efficient. His scent reached her, something clean and understated, like cedar and rain.
She hit record. "This is Solange Christian with Edgar Patterson for the Modern Desire series. Edgar, you specialize in audio inductions. What draws people to them?"
His answer came warm and unhurried. He spoke of suggestion and surrender, of voices that slipped beneath conscious resistance. Solange nodded, jotting notes, her questions sharp at first. He matched her pace, offering details without pressure. The conversation flowed, his tone steady and inviting.
Then the shift happened. Edgar leaned forward slightly. "For the demonstration we discussed, I would like to show a simple induction. Nothing invasive. Just a taste of how the voice guides attention."
She hesitated only a second. Professional curiosity won. "All right. Go ahead."
His voice deepened, the warmth layering into something smoother, slower. "Focus on my words, Solange. Notice how they settle. Breathe in on the count of three, and let the tension ease as you exhale. Your shoulders feel heavier now. Good. The room around you softens at the edges."
Solange kept her eyes on the monitor, but the words pulled at her. The cadence wrapped around her thoughts, each syllable measured and inevitable. Her breathing slowed without her deciding it. A faint warmth spread low in her belly, unexpected and distracting. She blinked hard, fingers tightening on her pen.
"You are listening so well," Edgar continued, voice velvet over steel. "Deeper with each breath. The sound of my voice becomes the only thing that matters right now."
Her mind drifted for a moment, the studio fading at the corners. Heat pooled between her thighs, a slick awareness she had not invited. She forced her shoulders back, biting her lip harder until the sting pulled her up. The drift broke. She cleared her throat, voice steadier than she felt.
"That is enough for the demo," she said. "We should wrap the interview segment."
Edgar stopped at once, the depth receding from his tone like a tide. "Of course. You came back quickly. Impressive control."
She laughed once, short and light, masking the pulse still racing under her skin. "Years of editing teaches focus." She reached for the board, stopping the recording. Her hands trembled faintly, but she hid it by adjusting a knob that did not need adjusting.
The team would return soon. She could not let them see the flush at her throat or the way her thighs pressed together under the desk. She stood, smoothing her blouse, and offered Edgar a polite smile.
"Thank you. This will make strong material. I will send the edit notes by tomorrow."
He rose with the same unhurried grace. "Looking forward to it, Solange. Your voice carries well on the track. It will be interesting to hear how it sits beside mine."
She walked him to the door, the air in the hallway cooler than the studio. Alone again, she leaned against the console, exhaling slowly. The arousal lingered, a low throb she refused to acknowledge fully. She packed her bag with quick movements, already planning the drive home and the distraction of dinner with Abram and Kenneth.
Yet as she stepped out into the evening, the memory of that deepened voice followed her, planting quiet seeds she could not yet name. Her body remembered the drift even as her mind insisted on control. She drove away unsettled, the first thread of compulsion already winding through her thoughts.
