The Queen's Summons
The stone corridors of Whitehall Palace swallowed the daylight whole. Eleanor Hartley pressed her palm against the cold wall, steadying herself as a pair of liveried servants rushed past without a glance. The torchlight cast dancing shadows across the tapestries, and the air hung thick with beeswax and woodsmoke. Beneath it lurked another scent, sharp and unfamiliar. Power, she realized. Power had a smell, and it lived here.
She had never left her village before. Not once in eight and twenty years. The journey to London had taken three days by cart, and every bump in the road had felt like a warning. But the queen's summons did not allow for hesitation. When the royal messenger arrived at her cottage door with the sealed parchment, Eleanor's hands had trembled as she broke the wax. Her neighbors had gathered outside, whispering. Mistress Hartley, the herb woman. Called to court. Imagine that.
She could not imagine it. Even now, standing in the servants' passage with her simple woolen gown and her basket of dried herbs, she could not make her mind accept the reality of where she was.
"You must be the healer."
The voice came from behind her, sharp and efficient. Eleanor turned to find a woman in severe black silk, her gray hair pinned tight beneath a French hood. Her eyes were the color of slate and just as cold.
"I'm Eleanor Hartley, yes. I was summoned to attend Her Majesty."
"I know what you were summoned for." The woman studied her with obvious skepticism. "I am Mistress Ashley. I oversee Her Majesty's private chambers. You will follow me. You will speak only when spoken to. You will not touch anything without permission. Is that understood?"
"Yes, Mistress Ashley."
The woman's lips pressed thin, as if Eleanor's compliance had disappointed her somehow. She turned and walked without checking to see if Eleanor followed.
They climbed a spiral staircase, the stone worn smooth by centuries of feet. The sounds of the court grew louder. Laughter and music drifted from somewhere above, punctuated by the rhythmic thump of dancing feet. Eleanor clutched her basket tighter, her fingers finding the familiar shapes of dried lavender and chamomile, valerian root and feverfew. These were her anchors. Her language. The only thing she understood in this world of silk and secrets.
Mistress Ashley stopped before a heavy oak door. Two guards in royal livery stood on either side, their halberds crossed. "The queen is in her privy chamber. She has been suffering from one of her headaches for three days now. The court physicians have bled her twice and administered purges. Nothing has helped."
Eleanor's stomach turned. "They bled her for a headache?"
"You will not question the royal physicians, Mistress Hartley."
"I'm not questioning. I'm simply noting that I wouldn't have chosen that treatment."
Mistress Ashley's eyes narrowed, but she said nothing. She nodded to the guards, who opened the door.
The privy chamber was smaller than Eleanor had expected, but no less grand. Tapestries covered every wall, scenes of hunting and mythology stitched in threads of gold and silver. A fire crackled in the hearth, casting warm light across the room. And there, seated in a cushioned chair near the window, was the Queen of England.
Elizabeth Tudor looked smaller than her portraits suggested. The famous red-gold hair was loose around her shoulders, and she wore a simple gown of deep green velvet without the elaborate ruff and jewels Eleanor had expected. Her face was pale, her eyes closed, one hand pressed to her temple.
Eleanor's breath caught. The queen was beautiful. Not in the way of the paintings, with their stiff formality and distant majesty, but in a way that was achingly human. The curve of her jaw. The slender line of her throat. The way her lips parted slightly as she breathed. She was a woman in pain, and a tenderness Eleanor had not anticipated stirred in her chest at the sight.
"She is here, Your Majesty," Mistress Ashley announced.
Elizabeth opened her eyes. They were dark, almost black in the firelight, and they fixed on Eleanor with an intensity that made her want to step back.
"So. You're the village healer."
"I am, Your Majesty."
"Come closer. Let me look at you."
Eleanor walked forward, her heart hammering against her ribs. She stopped a few feet from the queen's chair and curtsied, the movement awkward from lack of practice.
"Rise. Let me see your hands."
Eleanor extended them, palms up. The queen's gaze traveled over her calluses, the stains from herbs and roots that no amount of scrubbing could remove.
"You have the hands of a worker," Elizabeth said. "Not a courtier."
"No, Your Majesty. I'm a simple herbalist. I tend the sick in my village and the surrounding farms."
"And yet you claim to be able to help me when my own physicians cannot."
"I claim nothing, Your Majesty. I only ask to examine you and offer what I know."
A ghost of a smile crossed the queen's lips. "Bold words for a simple village woman."
"I mean no disrespect. Only honesty."
Elizabeth studied her for a long moment. Then she lowered her hand from her temple and gestured to the stool beside her chair. "Sit. Tell me what you see."
Eleanor sat, placing her basket on the floor. She leaned forward, her eyes meeting the queen's. "May I touch your forehead, Your Majesty?"
"You may."
Eleanor's fingers were cool against the queen's skin. Elizabeth's eyes fluttered closed at the contact, and Eleanor felt a small tremor run through her. She pressed gently along the temples, feeling the tension there, the tightness that spoke of days of unrelenting pain. The queen's skin was impossibly soft beneath her work-roughened hands, warm and faintly damp at the hairline where the red-gold curls clung to her brow. Eleanor traced the curve of her temple, the ridge of her brow, the delicate hollow beneath each eye. She let her fingertips rest there, feeling the faint pulse of blood beneath the skin, and the queen let out a soft exhale that seemed to carry the weight of three sleepless nights.
"The pain is behind your eyes, isn't it? A throbbing that worsens with light and sound."
"Yes." Elizabeth's voice had gone thin, barely more than a breath.
"And your stomach has been unsettled from the purges."
"The physicians' remedies have done nothing but make me weaker."
Eleanor withdrew her hands slowly, her fingers lingering a moment longer than necessary against the warmth of the queen's skin. She opened her basket. She selected a small cloth bag filled with dried feverfew and lavender, another with chamomile and lemon balm. "I'll prepare a tea for you, Your Majesty. It will ease the pain and settle your stomach. But more than that, I would ask you to rest in a dark room with a cool compress on your forehead. The bleeding and purging have only made the humors worse. What you need is stillness."
"You would counter the advice of the royal physicians?"
"I'd offer what I know to be true from years of treating such ailments. The choice is yours, of course."
Elizabeth's lips curved again, this time with what might have been amusement. "You speak your mind freely, Mistress Hartley."
"I was told that Your Majesty values honesty above flattery."
"Who told you that?"
"No one. I observed it from the way you looked at me when I entered. You were searching for truth, not performance."
The queen's eyes widened slightly. Then she laughed, a low, rich sound that seemed to surprise even her. "You're perceptive. That is dangerous in a court."
"I'm not of the court, Your Majesty. I'm only here to serve."
"For now."
Eleanor did not know what to make of that. She busied herself with preparing the tea, mixing the dried herbs in a small earthenware cup and pouring hot water from a kettle by the fire. The familiar motions steadied her hands.
She brought the cup to the queen, who took it and inhaled the steam. "It smells pleasant. Unlike the foul concoctions my physicians brew."
"They believe that medicine must taste terrible to be effective. I believe that the body responds better to what is gentle."
Elizabeth sipped the tea. Her expression softened as the warmth spread through her. "It is good. Remarkably good."
"Rest now, Your Majesty. The pain will ease within the hour."
Mistress Ashley stepped forward, her expression unreadable. "Shall I escort Mistress Hartley to the servants' quarters?"
"No." The queen's voice was firm. "She'll stay in the guest chamber near my apartments. I may need her again tonight."
"Your Majesty, that is highly irregular. She's a village woman, not a lady of the court."
"She is my healer, and she'll stay where I command."
Mistress Ashley's jaw tightened, but she dipped her head. "As you wish, Your Majesty."
Eleanor gathered her basket, her cheeks warm. The queen's defense of her was unexpected and strangely moving. She curtsied again, preparing to leave.
"Mistress Hartley."
She turned. Elizabeth had set down the tea cup and was watching her with those dark, unreadable eyes.
"You have eased a pain that has troubled me for three days. My physicians could not do that with all their learning and leeches. You did it with a handful of dried leaves and a gentle touch." The queen's voice dropped, becoming softer, more intimate. "I'm not accustomed to gratitude. I'm not certain how to express it properly."
"There's no need for gratitude, Your Majesty. I was glad to help."
"You'll find that I'm not a woman who accepts help without returning it." Elizabeth rose from her chair, crossing the room with a grace that belied her earlier exhaustion. She stopped before Eleanor, close enough that Eleanor could smell the lavender from the tea on her breath. "I will find a way to thank you. In my own time. In my own way."
The words hung in the air, weighted with a meaning Eleanor could not quite name. The queen's gaze traveled over her face, lingering on her lips, then her eyes, then the loose strands of hair that had escaped Eleanor's braid during the journey. It was not the look of a monarch assessing a servant. It was something far warmer. Something that made Eleanor's breath catch in her throat and heat bloom low in her belly.
Elizabeth reached up and touched Eleanor's cheek. The contact was brief, barely a brush of fingertips against her skin, but it sent a shiver through Eleanor that she could not suppress. The queen's fingers were long and elegant, and they trailed down from her cheek to her jaw, then to the hollow of her throat. Eleanor swallowed hard, feeling the queen's fingertips rest against the pulse that beat there.
"You tremble, Mistress Hartley," Elizabeth murmured. "Are you afraid of me?"
Eleanor could not lie. Not with those dark eyes so close, not with the queen's fingers still pressed to her throat. "I'm not afraid, Your Majesty."
"Then what is it?"
"I don't know."
A smile curved Elizabeth's lips, slow and knowing. "I think you do."
"Your Majesty," Mistress Ashley said, her voice cutting through the moment like a blade, "the Spanish ambassador is waiting for an audience."
Elizabeth's expression shuttered. She withdrew her hand, and Eleanor felt the loss of her touch like a sudden chill. The warmth vanished, replaced by the cool mask of royalty. "Of course. Mistress Hartley, you'll be shown to your chambers. I'll send for you in the morning."
"Thank you, Your Majesty."
As Eleanor followed Mistress Ashley from the room, she felt the queen's gaze on her back like a physical weight. The door closed behind her, and she leaned against the corridor wall, her heart racing. Her skin still burned where the queen had touched her. Her cheek. Her jaw. The hollow of her throat. She pressed her fingers to the spot, feeling her own pulse, rapid and insistent.
She had come to court to treat a headache. She had not expected to feel seen. She had not expected the queen's eyes to linger on her with such quiet hunger. She had not expected to want them to linger again, to want those elegant fingers to trace further, to wonder what the queen's lips might taste like.
Eleanor pressed her hand to her chest, feeling the rapid beat beneath her palm. A door had opened here tonight, one she had not known existed. She did not know where it led. But she knew, with the same certainty that she knew the properties of every herb in her basket, that her life would never be the same.

But she knew, with the same certainty that she knew the properties of every herb in her basket, that her life would never be the same.
Garden Whispers
The summons came at dusk, delivered by a maid with knowing eyes. Eleanor's heart hammered as she followed the girl through winding corridors, past guards who barely glanced her way. Days had passed since the audience chamber. Days spent waiting, replaying every word the queen had spoken until the memories wore smooth as river stones in her mind.
The garden gate stood open, a dark archway into another world.
"Her Majesty waits within." The maid curtsied and vanished.
Eleanor stepped through. The air hung heavy with honeysuckle and damp earth. Evening shadows pooled beneath ancient oaks, and somewhere water trickled over stone. She moved deeper, her soft leather slippers silent on the mossy path.
Then she saw her.
Elizabeth stood beneath a canopy of climbing roses, her red-gold hair unbound and falling past her shoulders. She wore no crown, no jewels, only a simple gown of deep green velvet that caught the fading light. She looked younger like this. Softer. More woman than monarch.
"You came." The queen's voice held something Eleanor couldn't name. Relief, perhaps. Or hope.
"I came." Eleanor curtsied, but Elizabeth waved the gesture away.
"Not here. Not now. Walk with me."
They moved along a path lined with lavender, their shoulders close but not touching. The scent rose around them, calming and sweet. Eleanor's pulse refused to slow.
"I've thought of you constantly." Elizabeth's words came low and quick, as if she had been holding them back. "Your hands. Your voice. The way you looked at me without fear."
"I should fear you."
"You don't."
"No." Eleanor stopped walking. "I don't."
Elizabeth turned to face her. The garden had grown dim, the first stars pricking through the violet sky. In this light, the queen's pale skin seemed to glow, and her dark eyes held depths Eleanor wanted to drown in.
"I'm so tired of being feared," Elizabeth whispered. "Tired of being watched. Tired of being a symbol when I'm flesh and blood." She took Eleanor's hand, pressed it against her own chest. "Feel. I'm real. I'm here."
Beneath Eleanor's palm, the queen's heart beat fast and strong. The warmth of her body seeped through the velvet, and Eleanor's fingers trembled.
"I know you're real." Eleanor's voice came out rough. "I haven't been able to think of anything else since I left your chambers."
"Tell me what you think of."
Eleanor's throat tightened. "Your eyes. The way they change in the light. Your voice, how it softens when you speak to me. The space between us that I want to close."
"Then close it."
Eleanor leaned in, her body moving without permission. Her lips brushed Elizabeth's, featherlight, a question. The queen's breath caught, and then her hand came up to cup Eleanor's jaw, pulling her closer.
The kiss deepened. Soft. Warm. Elizabeth's lips parted beneath hers, and Eleanor tasted mint and wine and something uniquely her. She pressed closer, one hand sliding into that unbound red-gold hair, marveling at its silkiness. Elizabeth made a sound, a small desperate noise, and Eleanor's heart cracked open.
"I've wanted this," Elizabeth breathed against her mouth. "I've lain awake wanting this."
"And I." Eleanor kissed her again, slower this time, learning the shape of her lips, the way she tilted her head, the soft gasp when Eleanor's tongue traced her lower lip. "I thought I imagined it. The way you looked at me."
"You imagined nothing." Elizabeth's hands moved down Eleanor's back, pressing their bodies together. The queen was taller, and Eleanor had to tilt her head up, a position of vulnerability she found she didn't mind. "I've had many come to my court. None have made me feel what I felt when you touched me."
"What did you feel?"
"Seen." Elizabeth's voice cracked. "Known. As if you could see past the crown and the mask to the woman beneath."
Eleanor kissed her again, pouring all her words into that touch. She kissed the corner of her mouth, her cheekbone, the soft skin beneath her ear. Elizabeth's head fell back, exposing her throat, and Eleanor pressed her lips there, feeling the pulse flutter beneath her mouth.
"Eleanor." The queen's voice was barely a breath. "I'm not accustomed to being vulnerable."
"I know." Eleanor drew back enough to meet her eyes. "I'm not accustomed to being bold. But you bring it out in me."
"Good." Elizabeth took her hand and led her deeper into the garden, to a hidden bower where ivy formed a curtain around a stone bench. "Here, we're not queen and subject. Here, we're just two women."
She sat, pulling Eleanor down beside her. The bench was cool through Eleanor's gown, but Elizabeth's body was warm against her side. For a moment, they simply sat, breathing together, the garden sounds filling the silence.
"Tell me something true," Elizabeth said. "Something no one else knows."
Eleanor considered. "I'm afraid every day. Afraid of being found out, of being sent away, of being unworthy of the trust placed in me. But when I'm with you, the fear quiets."
"And I'm afraid of being betrayed." Elizabeth's hand found hers, their fingers intertwining. "Everyone wants something from me. Power or favor or wealth. I've learned to see the wanting in their eyes. But you... you look at me and I see only you."
"I want something from you." Eleanor lifted their joined hands and pressed a kiss to Elizabeth's knuckles. "I want to know you. All of you. The parts you show no one."
"That's a dangerous thing to want."
"I know."
Elizabeth turned to face her fully, her eyes searching Eleanor's face. "Then I'll show you. But slowly. I have walls built over decades. They won't fall in a night."
"I have patience." Eleanor reached up, her fingers tracing the line of Elizabeth's jaw. "And I have time."
They kissed again, and this time it was different. Slower. Deeper. Elizabeth's hands came up to frame Eleanor's face, holding her as if she were something precious. Eleanor's hands found the queen's waist, fingers spreading over the velvet, feeling the warmth of the body beneath.
"May I?" Eleanor asked, her fingers finding the laces of Elizabeth's gown.
Elizabeth's breath hitched. "Yes."
Eleanor worked the laces with practiced ease, her fingers steady despite her racing heart. The velvet loosened, and she pushed it aside, revealing the thin linen shift beneath. Elizabeth's shoulders were bare, her collarbones sharp and elegant in the fading light.
Eleanor pressed her lips to one shoulder, then the other. Elizabeth shivered, her hands gripping Eleanor's shoulders.
"You're so beautiful," Eleanor murmured against her skin. "I knew you were beautiful from afar, but up close..." She kissed the curve of Elizabeth's neck. "Up close, you're breathtaking."
"Flattery." But Elizabeth's voice was breathless.
"Truth." Eleanor pulled back enough to meet her eyes. "I'll never lie to you. Not about this. Not about anything."
Elizabeth kissed her, fierce and desperate, and Eleanor answered with equal fire. Their mouths clashed, tongues tangling, and Eleanor's hands roamed the queen's shoulders, her back, the soft curve of her waist. Elizabeth's hands found Eleanor's bodice, tugging at the laces with less skill but equal urgency.
"Let me," Eleanor whispered, and quickly loosened her own gown, letting it slip down her shoulders. The cool evening air hit her skin, and then Elizabeth's hands were there, warm and trembling, tracing her collarbones, her shoulders, the swell of her breasts above her shift.
"You're soft," Elizabeth breathed. "Softer than I imagined."
Eleanor's eyes fluttered closed. The queen's touch was reverent, exploratory, learning the shape of her through the thin linen. When Elizabeth's thumbs brushed over her nipples, Eleanor gasped, her hips pressing forward involuntarily.
"Is this..." Elizabeth paused. "Is this acceptable?"
"Yes." Eleanor's voice came out hoarse. "God, yes."
Elizabeth continued her exploration, her fingers tracing the curve of Eleanor's breasts, the dip of her waist, the flare of her hips. Each touch sent sparks through Eleanor's body, building a heat low in her belly.
"I want to touch you," Eleanor managed. "May I?"
Elizabeth nodded, her eyes dark and hungry. Eleanor's hands found her waist, sliding up beneath the loosened gown, feeling the warmth of her skin through the shift. Elizabeth's breath quickened as Eleanor's fingers traced her ribs, the underside of her breasts, the rapid beat of her heart.
"You're trembling," Eleanor said.
"I'm not accustomed to being touched." Elizabeth's voice was barely audible. "No one has touched me like this. Not since..." She trailed off.
"Since when?"
"Since never." Elizabeth met her eyes, raw and open. "I've never let anyone this close."
Eleanor's heart ached. She pulled Elizabeth into her arms, holding her tight, feeling the queen's body shake against hers. "I'm honored. And I'll be careful with you."
"I know." Elizabeth's voice was muffled against Eleanor's shoulder. "I know you will."
They held each other for a long moment, the garden dark around them, the stars emerging one by one. Eleanor's hands moved in slow circles on Elizabeth's back, soothing, grounding.
Then Elizabeth pulled back, her eyes finding Eleanor's in the dimness. Something had shifted in her gaze. The vulnerability remained, but beneath it burned a quiet intensity that made Eleanor's breath catch.
"Touch me again," Elizabeth whispered. "Don't stop this time."
Eleanor's hands returned to her waist, sliding beneath the shift, palms flat against the warm skin of Elizabeth's stomach. The queen inhaled sharply, her abdominal muscles tightening beneath Eleanor's touch. Slowly, deliberately, Eleanor moved her hands upward, tracing the curve of each rib, feeling the softness of skin over bone, the slight dampness of nervous sweat in the hollow between Elizabeth's breasts.
Elizabeth's eyes closed. Her lips parted. Eleanor watched her face as her thumbs brushed the underside of each breast, featherlight, testing. The queen's breath came faster, her chest rising and falling beneath Eleanor's hands.
"Look at me," Eleanor said softly.
Elizabeth's eyes opened, dark and wide. In them, Eleanor saw fear and want and something that might have been wonder.
Eleanor cupped her breasts through the linen, feeling their weight, their warmth. Elizabeth's nipples pressed hard against her palms, and the queen made a sound that traveled straight to Eleanor's core. She leaned in and pressed her mouth to the curve of Elizabeth's breast above the shift's neckline, tasting salt and something floral, perhaps the remnants of rosewater from her morning bath.
"Eleanor." Elizabeth's hands found her hair, tangling in it, pulling her closer. "Please."
Eleanor tugged the shift down, baring Elizabeth's breasts to the cool night air. The queen's skin was pale here, almost luminous in the starlight, her nipples a dusky rose. Eleanor bent and took one in her mouth, and Elizabeth arched beneath her with a cry that she quickly muffled against her own hand.
"Hush," Eleanor murmured against her skin. "The garden isn't as private as it seems."
"I know." Elizabeth's voice was strained. "I can't... I didn't know it would feel like this."
Eleanor's tongue traced slow circles around the tightened peak, then drew it gently between her teeth. Elizabeth's hand flew to her mouth again, biting down on her knuckle. The taste of her, the sounds she made, the way her body responded so readily to every touch... it was intoxicating. Eleanor had never felt such power, such tenderness, such desperate need all tangled together.
She turned her attention to the other breast, kissing and licking until Elizabeth was trembling beneath her, her breath coming in ragged gasps. Then Eleanor pulled back, pressing her forehead against Elizabeth's collarbone, both of them breathing hard.
"I want more," Elizabeth whispered. "I want to feel your skin against mine."
Eleanor straightened and reached for her own shift, but Elizabeth's hands were there first, trembling but determined. She pulled the linen up and over Eleanor's head in one smooth motion, then let it fall beside them on the bench. For a moment, they simply looked at each other, both bare from the waist up, the starlight painting their skin in silver and shadow.
"You're beautiful," Elizabeth said, and her voice held no uncertainty now. She reached out and traced the line of Eleanor's collarbone, the curve of her shoulder, the slope of her breast. "I've imagined this. I'm ashamed to admit how often."
"Don't be ashamed." Eleanor caught her hand and pressed it flat against her chest, over her heart. "Feel what you do to me."
Elizabeth's eyes widened as she felt the racing heartbeat beneath her palm. She pressed closer, and then they were chest to chest, skin to skin, and the sensation was overwhelming. The warmth, the softness, the hard tips of Elizabeth's nipples brushing against Eleanor's own. Eleanor gasped, and Elizabeth swallowed the sound with a kiss.
They pressed together on the bench, the cool stone beneath them a counterpoint to the heat building between their bodies. Elizabeth's hands moved down Eleanor's back, fingers tracing her spine, dipping into the hollow at the small of her back. Eleanor shivered and arched into her, deepening the kiss until they were both breathless.
"I want to touch you everywhere," Elizabeth breathed. "I want to know every inch of you."
"Then do it." Eleanor leaned back slightly, giving the queen access. "I'm yours to explore."
Elizabeth's hands moved to the laces of Eleanor's skirt, hesitating briefly before working them loose. The fabric pooled around Eleanor's hips, and Elizabeth's fingers traced the edge of her smallclothes, featherlight, questioning.
"Yes," Eleanor whispered before she could ask. "Yes."
Elizabeth's hand slipped beneath the linen, and Eleanor felt her fingers tremble against her hip, her thigh, the sensitive skin of her inner leg. Eleanor parted her legs slightly, an invitation, and Elizabeth's breath caught audibly.
"You're wet," she said, wonder in her voice. Her fingers brushed the evidence of Eleanor's arousal, and Eleanor's hips jerked involuntarily.
"That's what happens," Eleanor managed, her voice unsteady. "When you touch me. When I think of you."
Elizabeth made a sound low in her throat, something between a groan and a whimper, and her fingers explored more confidently, sliding through the slickness, learning the shape of Eleanor's body. When she found the swollen bud at the apex of her thighs, Eleanor cried out and had to muffle herself against Elizabeth's shoulder.
"Like this?" Elizabeth asked, her fingers circling slowly.
"Yes. God, yes, just like that."
Elizabeth watched her face as she touched her, learning what made her gasp, what made her bite her lip, what made her hips press forward into her hand. She was a quick study, adjusting pressure and rhythm until Eleanor was trembling on the edge.
"Wait," Eleanor panted. "I want to touch you too. I want to feel you come apart in my hands."
Elizabeth hesitated, then nodded. She withdrew her hand, and they both worked to remove the rest of their clothing, letting the garments fall in a pool around the bench. The night air was cool but bearable, and the warmth of their bodies more than compensated.
Eleanor guided Elizabeth to lie back on the bench, the stone still holding the day's warmth. She knelt beside her, looking down at the queen's body in the starlight. The curve of her hips, the thatch of red-gold hair between her thighs, the slight softness of her belly. She was perfect. Imperfect and perfect and impossibly beautiful.
"You're staring," Elizabeth murmured, a flush creeping up her chest.
"I'm memorizing." Eleanor leaned down and kissed her stomach, feeling the muscles jump beneath her lips. "I want to remember every detail of this night."
She kissed a trail down Elizabeth's body, her hip, her thigh, and then she was between her legs, and Elizabeth's hands were in her hair again, gripping tight. Eleanor breathed in the scent of her, musky and warm, before pressing her mouth to the inside of her thigh, then higher, then higher still.
When Eleanor's tongue found her, Elizabeth's entire body went rigid. A strangled cry escaped her, quickly bitten off. Her thighs trembled on either side of Eleanor's head, and her hips pressed upward, seeking more.
"Eleanor, I can't... that's too..."
"Relax," Eleanor murmured against her, and the vibration of her words made Elizabeth gasp. "Let yourself feel it."
She worked her tongue in slow circles, then faster, learning what Elizabeth responded to, what made her buck and moan and grip her hair hard enough to hurt. When she slipped a finger inside, Elizabeth cried out again, louder this time, and Eleanor felt the tight clench of her body around her finger, the desperate rhythm of her hips.
"More," Elizabeth gasped. "Please, more."
Eleanor added a second finger, curling them upward as her tongue continued its work. Elizabeth was close, Eleanor could feel it in the way her body tightened, the way her breath came in sharp bursts, the way her thighs clamped around Eleanor's shoulders. She increased her pace, and Elizabeth's back arched off the bench.
"Eleanor. Eleanor, I'm..."
The queen's body convulsed around her fingers, and Eleanor felt the pulse of her release, felt the wetness increase, felt Elizabeth's hands go slack in her hair. She gentled her touch, easing Elizabeth through the aftershocks, pressing soft kisses to her thighs, her hips, her stomach.
When she finally looked up, Elizabeth was crying. Silent tears tracked down her temples into her hair, and her expression held something that looked like grief and joy tangled together.
"I'm sorry." Elizabeth wiped at her face, embarrassed. "I don't know why I'm..."
"Don't apologize." Eleanor climbed up her body and gathered her close, kissing the tears from her cheeks, her eyelids, her mouth. "You don't have to explain anything to me."
"I've never..." Elizabeth's voice broke. "I didn't know it could feel like that. I didn't know I could feel like that."
Eleanor held her tighter, her heart so full it ached. "It can always feel like that. With the right person. With someone who cares about your pleasure."
Elizabeth pulled back enough to look at her, her eyes red-rimmed but clear. "I want to make you feel like that. I want to give you what you gave me."
"You don't have to..."
"I want to." Elizabeth's voice was firm now, the vulnerability giving way to determination. "Teach me."
Eleanor took her hand and guided it between her own legs, gasping at the first touch of Elizabeth's fingers against her slick flesh. She was already close, had been close since she first tasted the queen, and it took all her control not to come apart immediately.
"Slower," she breathed. "Yes. Just there. Like that."
Elizabeth was a careful student, her fingers moving with the same attention she likely applied to matters of state. She watched Eleanor's face, adjusted her touch based on every gasp and moan, every flutter of her eyelashes. When Eleanor begged her to go inside, she did, two fingers sliding deep, and Eleanor's world narrowed to the sensation of being filled by this woman, this queen, this impossible dream made real.
"You feel incredible," Elizabeth whispered, wonder in her voice. "So warm. So tight."
"Faster. Please."
Elizabeth obeyed, her thumb finding the swollen bud above while her fingers worked inside. Eleanor's hips rose to meet her, her hands gripping the stone bench, then Elizabeth's shoulders, then her own hair. She was close, so close, the tension building like a spring wound too tight.
"Look at me," Elizabeth said, echoing Eleanor's earlier words. "I want to see you."
Eleanor opened her eyes and met the queen's gaze, and that was all it took. Her release crashed through her like a wave, and she heard herself crying out Elizabeth's name, her body clenching around the queen's fingers, her hips bucking with the force of it. Elizabeth held her through it, her free arm wrapped around Eleanor's back, her lips pressed to her temple.
"You're beautiful," Elizabeth murmured as the aftershocks faded. "You're so beautiful when you let go."
Eleanor laughed, a breathless, giddy sound. "I think that's my line."
They sat together on the bench, naked in the starlight, the cool air raising goosebumps on their skin. Eleanor pulled Elizabeth against her, wrapping her arms around the queen from behind, pressing her lips to the back of her neck.
"We should return," Elizabeth finally said. "Before we're missed."
"I know." But neither of them moved.
"Tomorrow. The same time." Elizabeth turned her head to find Eleanor's eyes in the darkness. "Come to me."
"I will."
Elizabeth kissed her once more, soft and sweet, a promise. Then they dressed each other, fingers lingering on newly familiar skin, adjusting laces and smoothing fabric with tender care. When they were both presentable, Elizabeth took Eleanor's hand one last time.
"This changes everything," she said. "You know that."
"I know."
"Are you afraid?"
Eleanor considered. "Yes. But I want this more than I fear it."
Elizabeth smiled, a real smile that transformed her face. "Then we'll be afraid together."
She led Eleanor back through the garden, their hands intertwined until they reached the gate. There, she released her, and the queen's mask slipped back into place. But her eyes held a warmth that hadn't been there before.
"Goodnight, Mistress Hartley."
"Goodnight, Your Majesty."
Eleanor curtsied, and Elizabeth disappeared into the palace, a shadow among shadows. Eleanor stood alone in the garden, her lips still tingling, her body still humming with the memory of touch. She pressed her fingers to her mouth and smiled.
Something had begun tonight. Something she couldn't name and couldn't resist. And Eleanor would not turn away from it for anything in the world.
Midnight Tonic
The queen's private chamber was a world unto itself, removed from the endless bustle of court. Eleanor stood at the threshold, her fingers laced before her, watching as Elizabeth dismissed the last of her ladies with a flick of her wrist.
"You may retire, Mistress Hartley," Elizabeth said, her voice carrying that familiar blend of authority and warmth. "I can't seem to sleep. The cares of the realm press upon me."
Eleanor stepped inside, and the door clicked shut behind her. The fire had burned low, casting dancing shadows across the tapestries that lined the walls. Elizabeth sat before her vanity, her red-gold hair unbound and spilling over her shoulders in waves that caught the candlelight.
"I could prepare a sleeping draught," Eleanor offered, moving toward the small table where she kept her herbs.
Elizabeth shook her head slowly. "No. I don't wish to sleep. I wish to feel something other than the weight of my crown."
There was something in her voice, a vulnerability that Eleanor had not heard before. She turned from her vanity to face Eleanor fully, and in the dim light, she looked almost fragile, her regal bearing softened by exhaustion and something else, something that made Eleanor's breath catch.
"Come here," Elizabeth said quietly.
Eleanor crossed the room, her steps muffled by the thick carpets. When she stood before the queen, Elizabeth reached up and took her hands, turning them over to examine her callused palms.
"These hands have healed me," Elizabeth murmured. "They've brewed medicines and gathered herbs. But I wonder what else they might do."
"My lady?" Eleanor's voice came out barely above a whisper.
Elizabeth stood, and the height difference between them was slight. She was close enough that Eleanor could smell the lavender she used in her bath, could see the fine lines at the corners of her eyes.
"My shoulders ache," Elizabeth said. "The tension of the day settles there like a stone. Would you ease it for me?"
It was not quite a question, but Eleanor nodded. Elizabeth turned, presenting her back, and Eleanor watched as she reached up to loosen the ties of her nightgown. The fabric slipped, revealing pale shoulders and the elegant curve of her spine.
Eleanor's hands trembled as she raised them. She had touched the queen before, during treatments, but never like this. Never with permission to simply feel.
She pressed her thumbs into the tight muscles of Elizabeth's shoulders, and the queen let out a quiet sigh. The sound sent a shiver through Eleanor, and she focused on the work, on the warmth of Elizabeth's skin beneath her fingers.
"You have a gift," Elizabeth said, her voice low. "Not just with herbs, but with your hands. They speak a language of their own."
Eleanor worked slowly, methodically, pressing into the knots and watching as Elizabeth's tension melted away. The queen's head fell forward, and a gentle moan escaped her lips.
"Does that please you, Your Majesty?"
"Elizabeth," the queen corrected. "When we're alone, you'll call me Elizabeth."
The intimacy of it made Eleanor's heart race. She continued the massage, letting her hands roam across Elizabeth's shoulders, down her arms, tracing the lines of her muscles. The nightgown slipped further, and Eleanor could see the shadow of Elizabeth's breasts, the curve of her waist.
"Turn around," Eleanor whispered, surprised by her own boldness.
Elizabeth complied, and Eleanor found herself facing the queen, the nightgown hanging precariously. Elizabeth's dark eyes met hers, and there was no pretense there, no royal mask.
"Kiss me," Elizabeth said.
Eleanor leaned in, her lips brushing against Elizabeth's. The kiss was gentle at first, tentative, but Elizabeth's hand came up to cup her cheek, pulling her closer. The kiss deepened, and Eleanor felt the world fall away. Elizabeth's mouth was warm and tasting faintly of honeyed wine. Her tongue traced the seam of Eleanor's lips, seeking entrance, and Eleanor opened to her with a shuddering breath.
When they broke apart, both breathless, Elizabeth took Eleanor's hand and led her to the bed. The canopy hung above them like a silken cloud, and the furs beneath them were impossibly luxurious against Eleanor's bare feet.
"I've thought of nothing but you since the garden," Elizabeth confessed, her fingers tracing the line of Eleanor's jaw. "I've dreamed of your touch."
"And I of yours," Eleanor replied, her voice shaking.
Elizabeth guided her down onto the bed, and Eleanor found herself straddling the queen's thigh. The position was intimate, and she could feel the heat between them even through their clothes. Elizabeth's hands settled on her hips, thumbs tracing slow circles through the fabric.
"I want to feel you," Elizabeth said, her fingers moving to the ties of Eleanor's gown. "I want to know every part of you."
Eleanor helped her, the fabric falling away to reveal her body. Elizabeth's eyes traveled over her, and Eleanor felt no shame, only a burning desire to be seen. The candlelight played across her skin, and Elizabeth's gaze followed it like a caress.
Then Elizabeth's hands were on her, tracing the curves of her breasts, the dip of her waist, the flare of her hips. Eleanor gasped as Elizabeth's thumb brushed across her nipple, and the queen smiled.
"You're beautiful," Elizabeth said. "Every inch of you."
Eleanor reached for Elizabeth's nightgown, pushing it down until it pooled around her waist. The queen's breasts were full and pale, and Eleanor leaned down to press her lips to them. Elizabeth moaned, her fingers threading through Eleanor's hair as Eleanor's tongue circled one tightened peak, then drew it into her mouth. Elizabeth arched beneath her, pressing closer, and Eleanor reveled in the taste of her skin, salt and lavender mingling on her tongue.
They explored each other slowly, reverently. Eleanor kissed her way down Elizabeth's body, pausing at the spot where her pulse fluttered at her throat, at the gentle curve of her belly. Elizabeth's breath came in ragged gasps, and her hips shifted restlessly against the furs.
"Please," Elizabeth whispered. "I need more."
Eleanor understood. She moved lower, settling between Elizabeth's thighs. The queen's legs fell open, and Eleanor could see the glistening evidence of her desire. She pressed a kiss to the inside of one thigh, then the other, feeling the muscles tremble beneath her lips.
She lowered her head, her tongue finding the center of Elizabeth's pleasure. The queen cried out, her hands gripping the furs. Eleanor worked with careful precision, learning what made Elizabeth arch and what made her moan. She traced slow circles at first, then broadened her strokes, pressing deeper. Elizabeth's taste was intoxicating, and Eleanor lost herself in the rhythm of it.
"That's it," Elizabeth gasped, her hips rising to meet Eleanor's mouth. "Don't stop. Please don't stop."
Eleanor did not stop. She slipped one finger inside Elizabeth, feeling the queen's body clench around her, and Elizabeth let out a strangled cry. Eleanor curled her finger, stroking in time with her tongue, building a rhythm that made Elizabeth's thighs shake. She added a second finger, and Elizabeth keened, her head tossing on the pillow.
The queen's body tensed, her back arching beautifully in the candlelight, and then she shattered with a cry that echoed through the chamber. Her release pulsed against Eleanor's tongue, and Eleanor drank it in, gentling her strokes as Elizabeth rode out the waves of pleasure. Only when the queen's body went limp did Eleanor press one last kiss to her thigh and crawl up to lie beside her.
Elizabeth turned, her eyes heavy-lidded and full of wonder. "Now you," she said.
She guided Eleanor onto her back and began to explore her body with the same reverence Eleanor had shown her. Elizabeth's mouth trailed fire down Eleanor's neck, across her collarbone, pausing to lavish attention on each breast until Eleanor was squirming beneath her. When Elizabeth's hand slid lower, her fingers finding the slick heat between Eleanor's thighs, Eleanor gasped and gripped the queen's shoulders.
"You're so wet," Elizabeth murmured against her skin. "So ready."
Elizabeth was patient, methodical. She teased and tasted until Eleanor was trembling, until every nerve in her body was alight. The queen's tongue replaced her fingers, and Eleanor nearly came undone at the first stroke. Elizabeth learned her quickly, finding the spots that made her gasp, the pressure that made her plead. Two fingers slid inside Eleanor while Elizabeth's mouth worked above, and the dual sensation was almost too much to bear.
"Elizabeth," Eleanor moaned, her hips moving of their own accord. "I can't... I'm going to..."
"Let go," Elizabeth whispered against her. "Let go for me."
When the climax came, it rolled through her in waves, leaving her breathless and shaking. Elizabeth held her through it, her fingers still moving gently, drawing out every last tremor until Eleanor collapsed back against the furs, utterly spent.
They lay together afterward, tangled in the furs. Elizabeth's head rested on Eleanor's shoulder, and Eleanor's arm wrapped around her, holding her close. The fire crackled, and somewhere beyond the windows, a night bird called.
"I've never given myself so fully to anyone," Elizabeth said, her voice barely above a whisper. "And I've never trusted anyone as I trust you."
"Nor I," Eleanor replied. "I came to court as a healer, but I found something I didn't expect."
Elizabeth lifted her head, her dark eyes meeting Eleanor's. "What did you find?"
Eleanor smiled, brushing a strand of hair from the queen's face. "A home. A purpose. You."
Elizabeth kissed her, tender and unhurried, and Eleanor felt the walls she had built around her heart begin to crumble. In the quiet of the chamber, with the fire crackling and the night stretching on, they held each other.
But even as Eleanor drifted toward sleep, she knew that this was only the beginning. Outside these walls, the court waited with its schemes and dangers. And somewhere in the shadows, Lady Walsingham was watching.
For now, though, there was only this. Only Elizabeth in her arms, her breath warm against Eleanor's skin.
Only the promise of more to come.
Masque of Secrets
Eleanor stood at the edge of the great hall, her mask of black velvet and silver thread feeling both foreign and liberating. The masquerade had transformed the familiar court into a realm of shadows and whispers, where identities hid behind silk and feathers. She adjusted the simple gown she had borrowed from one of the queen's trusted maids, its dark blue fabric allowing her to blend among the swirling colors of the nobility.
The air was thick with perfume and candle smoke, the music of lutes and viols weaving through the chatter of disguised courtiers. Eleanor watched them dance, their movements graceful and deliberate, each step a performance. She had never felt more out of place, yet there was a thrill in her anonymity. No one knew the village herbalist stood among them, watching the queen's court from behind a mask.
Then she saw Elizabeth.
The queen wore a gown of deep crimson, her mask adorned with golden phoenix feathers that curled upward like flames. She moved through the crowd with the confidence of a woman who owned every room she entered, yet her eyes searched, scanning the masked faces until they found Eleanor's.
Elizabeth's lips curved beneath her mask. She crossed the hall with purpose, her skirts brushing against the stone floor, and extended her hand.
"I don't believe we've been introduced," Elizabeth said, her voice carrying the playful lilt of a woman enjoying her own game.
Eleanor took the offered hand, her pulse quickening at the familiar touch of Elizabeth's fingers. "I'm but a humble traveler, Your Majesty. Here to witness the splendor of your court."
"Traveler, you say?" Elizabeth stepped closer, her voice dropping to a whisper only Eleanor could hear. "I'd recognize those hands anywhere, Mistress Hartley. They've touched me in ways no traveler ever has."
Heat flooded Eleanor's cheeks beneath her mask. "Your Majesty is too kind."
"Not kind. Attentive." Elizabeth's fingers tightened around Eleanor's. "Dance with me."
It was not a request. Eleanor allowed herself to be led onto the floor, her body falling into the steps of the pavane as if she had been born to courtly dance. Elizabeth's hand rested on her waist, guiding her through the turns and bows, their bodies close enough that Eleanor could feel the warmth radiating from the queen.
"You look beautiful tonight," Elizabeth murmured, her lips near Eleanor's ear. "The mask becomes you."
"I feel like a fraud," Eleanor admitted. "Surrounded by all this opulence."
"You're no fraud. You're the most genuine person in this room." Elizabeth's hand pressed more firmly against her back. "These people wear masks every day. You wear one only tonight, and even so, your truth shines through."
Eleanor's heart swelled at the words. She had spent weeks at court now, learning its rhythms and dangers, and still she felt like an outsider. But Elizabeth's words reminded her why she stayed: this woman, this queen who saw her as no one else did.
The dance ended, and Elizabeth led her from the floor, through the crowd, toward a corridor lined with tapestries. The music faded behind them, replaced by the echo of their footsteps on stone.
"Where are we going?" Eleanor asked, her voice breathless.
"Somewhere private." Elizabeth's hand never left hers. "I've missed you these past days. State matters have kept me from your chambers."
"I've missed you as well." Eleanor's confession came easily now, a sign of how much she had changed since arriving at court. The woman who had trembled before the queen in their first audience was gone, replaced by someone who craved Elizabeth's touch, her voice, her presence.
They turned into a small alcove hidden behind a heavy tapestry. The space was narrow, barely large enough for two, but it offered complete concealment from anyone passing. A single candle flickered on a small shelf, casting dancing shadows across Elizabeth's masked face.
Elizabeth pushed the tapestry back into place, sealing them in their secret haven. She turned to Eleanor, her eyes dark with desire.
"I've thought of nothing but you," Elizabeth said, her hands finding Eleanor's waist. "The taste of you. The sounds you made. I want more."
Eleanor's breath caught. The risk of discovery, the proximity of the court just beyond the tapestry, made her skin tingle with a dangerous excitement. "Here? Someone could find us."
"That's what makes it thrilling." Elizabeth pressed closer, her lips finding Eleanor's neck. "Do you trust me?"
"Yes." The word came without hesitation.
Elizabeth's mouth moved along Eleanor's jaw, her teeth grazing the sensitive skin. Eleanor's hands found the queen's shoulders, gripping the rich fabric of her gown as Elizabeth's lips claimed hers in a kiss that was both tender and demanding.
The kiss deepened, Elizabeth's tongue sliding against Eleanor's, tasting of wine and something uniquely her. Eleanor moaned softly, the sound swallowed by Elizabeth's mouth. The queen's hands moved down Eleanor's sides, tracing her curves through the thin fabric of her borrowed gown.
"I want to touch you," Elizabeth whispered against her lips. "I want to feel you come undone beneath my fingers."
Eleanor's response was lost in a gasp as Elizabeth's hand slid up her thigh, pushing her skirts higher. The cool air of the alcove kissed her skin, followed by the warmth of Elizabeth's palm.
"Spread your legs for me," Elizabeth commanded softly.
Eleanor obeyed, widening her stance, her back pressed against the cold stone wall. Elizabeth's fingers found her center, already slick with arousal, and she let out a low hum of approval.
"You're ready for me," Elizabeth said, her voice husky. "Have you been thinking of this all night?"
"Yes," Eleanor breathed. "Watching you dance, watching you command the room. I wanted you."
Elizabeth's fingers circled her clit, slow and deliberate, drawing out Eleanor's pleasure. Eleanor bit her lip to keep from crying out, the sound of the court's revelry drifting through the tapestry a constant reminder of their danger.
"Your Majesty," Eleanor whimpered.
"Shh," Elizabeth soothed, her fingers continuing their torturous pace. "You must be quiet. Can you do that for me?"
Eleanor nodded, her eyes squeezed shut, her focus narrowing to the sensation of Elizabeth's touch. The queen's fingers slid lower, one dipping inside her, and Eleanor's hips bucked involuntarily.
"Yes," Elizabeth murmured. "That's it. Let me feel you."
She added a second finger, stretching Eleanor, filling her. Eleanor's hands clawed at the stone wall behind her, seeking purchase as Elizabeth's fingers moved inside her, curling and stroking with practiced precision.
The pleasure built slowly, a rising tide that threatened to overwhelm her. Eleanor's breathing grew ragged, her body trembling with the effort of staying silent. Elizabeth's thumb found her clit again, pressing in circles that sent sparks of electricity through her veins.
Elizabeth leaned close, her breath hot against Eleanor's ear. "You feel so perfect around my fingers. So wet. So desperate."
Eleanor whimpered, her hips rocking against Elizabeth's hand. The queen's fingers moved deeper, curling to find the spot that made Eleanor see stars behind her closed eyelids.
"Tell me what you want," Elizabeth whispered.
"More. Please." Eleanor's voice was barely audible. "Don't stop."
Elizabeth smiled against her neck, her teeth grazing the sensitive skin there. "I won't stop. Not until you shatter for me."
Her fingers quickened their pace, thrusting deeper, while her thumb maintained its relentless circling. Eleanor felt the pressure building in her core, spreading outward like heat from a fire. Her thighs trembled, her breath coming in short, sharp gasps.
"I'm close," Eleanor gasped, her voice barely a whisper.
"I know." Elizabeth's fingers moved faster, deeper. "Let go for me. I've got you."
Elizabeth's free hand slid up to cup Eleanor's breast through her gown, her thumb brushing over the peaked nipple. The dual sensation sent a jolt through Eleanor, her inner walls clenching around Elizabeth's fingers.
"Come for me," Elizabeth commanded, her voice low and rough. "Now."
The world narrowed to the point of Elizabeth's touch, the pressure building until Eleanor shattered, her orgasm crashing through her in waves. She bit down on her lip, tasting blood, as her body convulsed around Elizabeth's fingers. The pleasure rippled through her in endless pulses, each wave more intense than the last, and she clutched at Elizabeth's shoulders to keep from collapsing.
Elizabeth held her through it, her movements slowing, drawing out every last tremor before withdrawing. She brought her fingers to her lips, tasting Eleanor's essence, her eyes never leaving Eleanor's. The candlelight caught the glisten on her fingers before she licked them clean, one by one.
"You're exquisite," Elizabeth said.
Before Eleanor could respond, footsteps echoed in the corridor. They froze, pressed together in the darkness of the alcove, barely breathing. The footsteps grew closer, accompanied by the murmur of voices.
"It was Lady Walsingham I saw," a woman's voice said. "She disappeared this way."
Eleanor's heart hammered against her ribs. Lady Walsingham. The woman who had watched her with calculating eyes at every court event, who seemed to suspect something of the growing bond between Eleanor and the queen.
"Perhaps she found a companion for the evening," another voice replied with a laugh. "Let her be."
The footsteps retreated, fading into the music of the great hall. Eleanor let out a shuddering breath, her body still trembling from both pleasure and fear.
"That was close," she whispered.
Elizabeth smiled, her mask askew, her eyes bright with mischief. "Wasn't it thrilling?"
Eleanor laughed softly, the sound a release of tension. "You're a danger to my sanity."
"And you to my composure." Elizabeth straightened Eleanor's gown, smoothing the wrinkled fabric with lingering touches. "We should return separately. I'll go first. Wait a few minutes before following."
Eleanor nodded, still catching her breath. Elizabeth pressed one last kiss to her lips, gentle this time, before slipping through the tapestry and disappearing into the corridor.
Eleanor leaned against the wall, her body humming with residual pleasure. She thought of the woman who had just touched her so intimately, the queen of England who knelt for no one, yet had knelt for her in the privacy of her chambers. She thought of Lady Walsingham's watchful eyes, the danger that lurked in every corner of the court.
And she thought of how she would do it all again, risk everything, for another moment in Elizabeth's arms.
She waited until her breathing steadied, until her legs felt solid beneath her, before stepping out of the alcove. The corridor was empty. She adjusted her mask and walked back toward the great hall, a woman transformed, carrying secrets that burned bright within her chest.
The masquerade continued, the dancers spinning in their intricate patterns, unaware of the passion that had unfolded just beyond their sight. Eleanor found a place against the wall, watching, waiting for the moment when Elizabeth's eyes would find hers again across the crowded room.
When they did, Elizabeth's smile was small, secret, meant only for her. And Eleanor smiled back, knowing that whatever dangers lay ahead, she would face them at this woman's side.
The queen's shadow advisor, hidden in plain sight, bound by love and desire and the most dangerous secret of all.
Royal Confidence
The fire had burned down to crimson embers, casting long shadows across the queen's private study. Eleanor stood by the window, watching the moonlight silver the Thames below. Behind her, Elizabeth paced, her silk skirts whispering against the rush matting.
"I can't sleep," the queen said, her voice tight. "I haven't slept properly in three days."
Eleanor turned. Elizabeth looked smaller somehow, despite her jeweled gown and the elaborate arrangement of her hair. There were new lines around her eyes, a tension in her shoulders that Eleanor had learned to read.
"What troubles you, Your Majesty?"
Elizabeth stopped pacing. She stared at the fire, her profile sharp against the glow. "You'll think less of me."
"Never."
The queen let out a breath that sounded like a laugh and a sob mixed together. "Lord Ashworth has been found in correspondence with the Spanish ambassador. He's planning to marry Infanta Catalina's cousin. They mean to press her claim to my throne."
Eleanor's blood ran cold. She knew Lord Ashworth. A charming man with warm eyes and a ready smile. He had danced with Elizabeth at the Christmas masque. He had kissed her hand and called her his sovereign.
"Do you have proof?"
Elizabeth turned to face her. Her dark eyes were bright with unshed tears. "His own cousin brought me the letters. She chose her queen over her family. I have them locked in my private chest."
"Then you have the weapon you need."
"Do I?" Elizabeth's voice cracked. "He was my friend, Eleanor. I trusted him. I gave him lands and titles. I made him who he is. And this is how he repays me."
Eleanor crossed the room. She took Elizabeth's cold hands in her own. The queen's fingers were trembling.
"I'm sorry," Eleanor said softly. "I know what it costs you to be betrayed."
Elizabeth looked down at their joined hands. "I keep thinking about what I could have done differently. What signs I missed. Was I blind? Was I foolish?"
"You were generous. There's no shame in that."
"There's only pain."
Eleanor lifted Elizabeth's hands and pressed a kiss to her knuckles. "Then let me help you forget. Just for tonight."
The queen's eyes met hers. Something shifted in them, a softening, a surrender. "Yes," she whispered. "Please."
Eleanor led her to the bedchamber. The great canopy bed loomed in the darkness, its curtains drawn back. Moonlight fell across the embroidered coverlet. She guided Elizabeth to sit on the edge of the bed, then knelt before her.
"Let me take care of you," Eleanor said.
She reached for the pins in Elizabeth's hair. One by one she removed them, letting the red-gold waves tumble down. The queen closed her eyes, her breath slowing. Eleanor worked her fingers through the strands, massaging the queen's scalp. Elizabeth groaned softly.
"Your hands are magic," she murmured.
"They're just hands, Your Majesty."
"They're yours. That makes them magic."
Eleanor smiled. She moved to the queen's gown, unlacing the bodice with practiced fingers. The fabric fell away, revealing the fine linen shift beneath. She pressed a kiss to Elizabeth's exposed shoulder.
"I want to know everything," Elizabeth said suddenly. "About the herbs you use. The remedies you make. How you learned them."
Eleanor paused. "Why?"
"Because I want to know you. All of you. Not just your body, but your mind, your history, your heart."
The words settled in Eleanor's chest like a warm weight. She lifted her head to look at Elizabeth. The queen's face was open, vulnerable, stripped of all pretense.
"I'll tell you everything," Eleanor said. "But not tonight. Tonight, I want to show you how much you're loved."
She rose and helped Elizabeth stand, then guided the shift over her head. The queen stood naked before her, pale in the moonlight. Eleanor drank in the sight of her: the curve of her breasts, the softness of her belly, the strength of her thighs.
"You're beautiful," Eleanor breathed.
"So are you. Come here."
Eleanor undressed quickly, letting her own gown fall to the floor. She stepped into Elizabeth's arms, and they held each other, skin against skin. The queen's body was warm, her heartbeat strong against Eleanor's chest.
They moved to the bed, lying side by side. Eleanor propped herself on one elbow, looking down at Elizabeth. She traced the line of the queen's jaw, the curve of her throat, the hollow at her collarbone.
"I'm going to take my time," Eleanor said. "I'm going to remember every inch of you."
Elizabeth's lips curved. "I'm not going anywhere."
Eleanor began with her mouth. She kissed Elizabeth's forehead, her closed eyes, the tip of her nose. She kissed her lips, soft and slow, a greeting rather than a demand. Elizabeth sighed against her mouth, her hands coming up to cup Eleanor's face.
"More," she whispered.
Eleanor obliged. She kissed down Elizabeth's throat, pausing at the pulse point to feel the rapid beat beneath her lips. She moved lower, taking one nipple into her mouth. Elizabeth gasped, her back arching.
"Yes," the queen breathed. "Don't stop."
Eleanor didn't. She laved and suckled, her tongue tracing circles around the stiffened peak before drawing it deeper into the warmth of her mouth. Elizabeth's fingers tightened in her hair, pulling her closer. She switched to the other breast, treating it with the same devoted attention, while her free hand drifted across the queen's ribs, her stomach, tracing the edge of her hipbone.
The queen's breathing grew ragged, her hips beginning to shift restlessly against the sheets.
"He wrote to me too," Elizabeth said, her voice strained. "Ashworth. He wrote me love letters. I kept them. I thought they were sincere."
Eleanor lifted her head. "You don't have to talk about this."
"I want to. I need you to know." Elizabeth's fingers traced the shell of Eleanor's ear. "He told me I was the sun of his world. That he would die for me. And all the while he was plotting with Spain."
"His words were lies. Mine are not."
"I know." Elizabeth pulled Eleanor up for a kiss. "I know."
They kissed deeply, tongues tangling, breath mingling. Eleanor's hand drifted down Elizabeth's side, over the flare of her hip, between her thighs. The queen was already wet, slick and ready. She pressed gently, finding the nub of her pleasure, and Elizabeth trembled at the contact.
Elizabeth cried out, breaking the kiss. "Yes. There. Don't stop."
Eleanor circled her clit with steady pressure, watching Elizabeth's face contort with pleasure. The queen's eyes were closed, her lips parted, her breath coming in short gasps. She varied her rhythm, sometimes slow and deliberate, sometimes quick and flickering, reading every response in the queen's body.
"More," Elizabeth demanded. "Inside me."
Eleanor slid one finger inside her, feeling the queen's warmth clench around her. She withdrew slowly, then added a second finger, stretching Elizabeth open. The queen's inner walls gripped her, hot and tight. She pumped slowly, matching the rhythm of her thumb on the queen's clit.
"The letters are in a leather chest," Elizabeth said, her voice hitching. "Locked with a key I keep around my neck. I read them again tonight. I wanted to be sure. I wanted to be wrong."
"You weren't wrong. You were betrayed."
"I know. I know." Elizabeth's hips began to move, thrusting against Eleanor's hand. "Don't stop. Please don't stop."
Eleanor increased her pace. She curled her fingers, searching for that spot that made Elizabeth see stars. When she found it, the queen's whole body tensed, her thighs clamping around Eleanor's wrist.
"There," Elizabeth gasped. "Right there. I'm close. I'm so close."
"Come for me," Eleanor said, her voice low. "Let go. I have you."
Elizabeth's orgasm crashed through her. She cried out, her body arching off the bed, her inner walls spasming around Eleanor's fingers. She worked her through it, slowing only when the queen collapsed against the pillows, chest heaving, skin glistening with a fine sheen of sweat.
For a long moment, they lay in silence. Elizabeth's breath slowly steadied. Her hand found Eleanor's, lacing their fingers together.
"Your turn," Elizabeth said.
She rolled Eleanor onto her back, taking control. She kissed her way down Eleanor's body, pausing at her breasts to take each nipple into her mouth in turn, sucking and nibbling until Eleanor squirmed beneath her. She continued lower, pressing open-mouthed kisses to her belly, her hip bones, the sensitive skin of her inner thighs. Eleanor shivered with anticipation.
"I want to taste you," Elizabeth said. "I want to know what you feel like when you come apart."
Eleanor's breath caught. "Yes."
Elizabeth settled between her thighs. Her first touch was light, a barely-there brush of her tongue along Eleanor's folds. Eleanor gasped, her hips jerking upward. Elizabeth smiled against her skin.
"Impatient?"
"You've been teasing me."
"I have." Elizabeth licked again, firmer this time, parting Eleanor's slick flesh with the tip of her tongue. "I like hearing you gasp."
Eleanor's hands fisted in the sheets. Elizabeth's tongue was skilled, finding every sensitive spot, alternating between broad strokes that covered her entire sex and pointed flicks that targeted her swollen clit. She took Eleanor's clit into her mouth and sucked gently, and Eleanor nearly came off the bed.
"The conspiracy goes deeper than I thought," Elizabeth said, pausing to look up at Eleanor. "Ashworth has allies in my own court. Men I trusted with my life."
Eleanor's mind struggled to process the words while her body screamed for release. "Who?"
"Lord Carrington. Sir William Blake. Perhaps even my own secretary."
"Elizabeth." Eleanor's voice was strained. "You shouldn't be telling me this."
"I trust you." The queen lowered her head again, her tongue finding Eleanor's clit once more. She circled it slowly, then faster, then slipped two fingers inside Eleanor's wet heat, pumping in time with her mouth.
The combination of her words and her touch sent Eleanor spiraling. Elizabeth's fingers curled inside her, pressing against that secret spot while her tongue worked relentlessly. Pleasure coiled tighter and tighter in Eleanor's belly until it snapped.
She came with a cry, her body convulsing, her vision going white. Elizabeth held her through it, her mouth gentle, her hands steady, easing her down from the peak with soft strokes and tender kisses.
When Eleanor could think again, she pulled Elizabeth up into her arms. They lay tangled together, sweat cooling on their skin, the taste of each other still on their lips.
"Thank you," Elizabeth whispered.
"For what?"
"For listening. For not judging me. For being here."
Eleanor pressed a kiss to the queen's forehead. "I'll always be here. No matter what happens."
Elizabeth lifted her head, her dark eyes searching Eleanor's face. "I mean it about the trust. I've never told anyone what I just told you. Not Cecil. Not even Dudley in his prime."
"I'm honored."
"You should be." Elizabeth's voice was wry, but her eyes were soft. "You've become more to me than I ever expected. More than I thought I could have."
Eleanor's heart swelled. "And you've become everything to me."
They kissed again, slow and sweet. When they broke apart, Elizabeth's eyes were heavy with exhaustion.
"Sleep," Eleanor said. "I'll be here when you wake."
"Promise?"
"I promise."
Elizabeth settled against her, her head on Eleanor's breast. Within minutes, her breathing evened out, her body relaxing into sleep.
Eleanor lay awake, staring at the canopy above. She held the queen in her arms, feeling the weight of her trust, the burden of her secrets. It was terrifying and exhilarating in equal measure.
She was no longer just a healer. She was no longer just a lover.
She was the keeper of the queen's confidence. The holder of her secrets. The one person in all of England who knew Elizabeth Tudor's true heart.
And she would protect it with her life.
The fire crackled in the hearth. The moon continued its slow arc across the sky. Eleanor closed her eyes and let herself believe, for just a moment, that this could last forever.
Light Dominion
The autumn evening pressed against the leaded windows of Elizabeth's private chamber, the last light bleeding from the sky in shades of bruised purple and fading amber. Eleanor stood by the hearth, watching the flames dance, her fingers laced together to keep them still. She had grown accustomed to these summons, to the way her heart quickened when the queen's messenger arrived, but tonight something felt different. Elizabeth had been quiet during supper, her hand lingering on Eleanor's wrist, her eyes holding secrets.
"You seem far away tonight, Bess," Eleanor said, turning from the fire.
Elizabeth sat at her dressing table, her ladies dismissed for the evening. She wore a simple gown of deep green velvet, her red-gold hair unbound and falling past her shoulders. In the candlelight she looked younger, softer, the weight of sovereignty momentarily set aside.
"Not far away, my love. Simply thinking." Elizabeth rose and crossed to a carved wooden chest near the window. She opened it and withdrew something Eleanor could not see, her back blocking the view.
"Thinking about what?"
Elizabeth turned, and in her hands she held a length of silk ribbon. Not one. Several. They spilled from her fingers in a cascade of color, deep crimson, midnight blue, pale gold. She held them up, and the firelight caught the fabric, making it glow.
"I've been thinking about trust," Elizabeth said, her voice low and measured. "About what it means to give oneself completely to another. To surrender control without fear."
Eleanor's breath caught. She understood immediately, and the understanding sent a shiver through her that was equal parts trepidation and longing. In their previous encounters, there had always been a balance, a give and take. Eleanor had held Elizabeth as she trembled, had guided her through pleasure and vulnerability. But this was different. This was Elizabeth asking for something else entirely.
"You want to bind me," Eleanor said. It was not a question.
Elizabeth stepped closer, the ribbons trailing from her fingers like captured rainbows. "I want to explore something new with you. Something I've never dared to ask of anyone." She stopped before Eleanor, close enough that Eleanor could smell the lavender oil she used on her skin. "I want to see you completely vulnerable, completely trusting. I want to know that you're mine, not because I command it, but because you choose it."
Eleanor's heart hammered against her ribs. A voice in her head, the cautious one that had kept her safe through years of village life and court intrigue, whispered warnings. But another voice, louder and more certain, spoke of the bond she had built with this woman, the trust that had grown through whispered secrets and shared pleasure and the dangerous knowledge of treason plots.
"You're not afraid I'll hurt you?" Eleanor asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Elizabeth reached out and cupped Eleanor's cheek. Her palm was warm, her touch gentle. "I could never hurt you, Eleanor. That's precisely why I want this. Because I know I won't. Because you know it too."
Eleanor closed her eyes and leaned into the touch. She thought of the journey that had brought her here, from the quiet herb garden of her village to the heart of the Tudor court. She thought of the woman before her, not the queen of England but the woman who had trembled in her arms, who had laughed with her in hidden gardens, who had trusted her with state secrets and the deepest longings of her heart.
"Yes," Eleanor said.
Elizabeth's breath escaped in a soft sigh. She took Eleanor's hand and led her to the great bed, its curtains of velvet and gold hanging heavy around them. The bedchamber felt smaller now, more intimate, the world outside fading to nothing.
"Sit," Elizabeth said, and Eleanor obeyed.
Elizabeth climbed onto the bed behind her, arranging the pillows, creating a nest of comfort. Then she took Eleanor's hands and guided her to lie back, her head resting on the soft down. Elizabeth's hair brushed Eleanor's cheek as she leaned over her.
"I'm going to tie your wrists," Elizabeth said, her voice gentle but firm. "Not tightly. If anything feels wrong, if you need me to stop, you've only to say the word. Do you understand?"
"Yes."
"I need to hear you say it clearly, my love."
Eleanor looked up into Elizabeth's dark eyes, seeing the care there, the tenderness. "I understand, Bess. I trust you."
Elizabeth smiled, and it was like watching the sun break through clouds. She took Eleanor's right wrist and lifted it above her head, wrapping it with a length of crimson ribbon. The silk was cool against Eleanor's skin, smooth and soft. Elizabeth tied it to the bedpost with careful knots, not too tight, leaving room for movement but creating a gentle restraint.
"Tell me how that feels," Elizabeth said.
"Strange. But not unpleasant."
Elizabeth repeated the process with Eleanor's left wrist, using the blue ribbon this time. She tied it to the other bedpost, and Eleanor found herself stretched out beneath the queen, her arms above her head, her body open and vulnerable.
"Beautiful," Elizabeth breathed. "You're so beautiful like this."
Eleanor's cheeks flushed. She felt exposed in a way she had never felt before, even when completely naked. There was something about the restraint, the inability to move, that stripped away all pretense. She couldn't hide. She couldn't turn away. She could only lie there and be seen.
Elizabeth's hands moved to the laces of Eleanor's gown, working them loose with practiced fingers. The fabric fell away, and Elizabeth pushed it aside, baring Eleanor's shoulders, her breasts, the curve of her waist. The air was cool on Eleanor's skin, and she shivered.
"Cold?" Elizabeth asked.
"No. Just... feeling everything more."
"Good." Elizabeth's hand traced down Eleanor's throat, between her breasts, over her stomach. The touch was light, almost teasing, and Eleanor arched into it instinctively. But the ribbons held her in place, and she couldn't reach for Elizabeth, couldn't pull her closer.
"Please," Eleanor whispered.
"Please what?"
"Touch me. Properly."
Elizabeth laughed softly, a sound of pure delight. "But I'm touching you, my love. I'm touching you exactly as I wish." Her hand continued its journey, slipping beneath the waist of Eleanor's skirts, finding the damp heat between her thighs. Eleanor gasped and her hips bucked, but she couldn't escape the sensation, couldn't control the rhythm.
"That's it," Elizabeth murmured. "Let me have you. Let me take you where I will."
Eleanor closed her eyes and surrendered. There was a strange freedom in the helplessness, a liberation in the knowledge that she didn't have to do anything, couldn't do anything, could only feel. Elizabeth's fingers moved with exquisite slowness, circling and teasing, building pleasure layer by layer.
"You're so wet for me," Elizabeth said. "You want this, don't you?"
"Yes. God, yes."
"Tell me why."
Eleanor opened her eyes and looked up at Elizabeth, who was watching her with an expression of such fierce tenderness that it stole her breath. "Because I trust you. Because I love you. Because I want to give you everything."
Elizabeth's composure cracked. Her eyes glistened, and she leaned down to press a kiss to Eleanor's lips, soft and sweet and full of promise. "And I want to give you everything in return," she whispered against Eleanor's mouth. "I want to show you what it means to be cherished."
Her fingers slid inside Eleanor, and Eleanor cried out, her back arching off the bed. Elizabeth moved with slow, deliberate strokes, her thumb pressing against the sensitive nub at the apex of Eleanor's thighs. The pleasure built like a tide, rising and rising, and Eleanor could do nothing but receive it.
"Look at me," Elizabeth commanded, and Eleanor obeyed. Their eyes locked, and Elizabeth's gaze was a tether, grounding her even as the pleasure threatened to sweep her away.
"I'm going to make you come," Elizabeth said. "And you're going to let me. You're going to let go completely, and I'll catch you."
Eleanor nodded, unable to speak. The tension coiled in her belly, tight and hot and desperate. She wanted to move, to wrap her arms around Elizabeth, to pull her close, but the ribbons held her still, and the helplessness only intensified everything.
Elizabeth's fingers curled within her, finding the place that made Eleanor see stars. She stroked it slowly, deliberately, each movement a studied caress that sent shockwaves of pleasure radiating through Eleanor's body. Eleanor's thighs trembled, her wrists straining against the silk, not to escape but to ground herself against the overwhelming sensation.
"You're trembling," Elizabeth observed, her voice thick with desire. "I can feel you clenching around my fingers. So tight. So ready."
"Bess, please," Eleanor gasped. "I need..."
"What do you need? Tell me."
"More. Harder. Please."
Elizabeth's thumb pressed firmer against that swollen bud, circling with increased pressure while her fingers thrust deeper, finding a rhythm that matched the racing of Eleanor's pulse. The wet sounds of their joining filled the chamber, obscene and beautiful, punctuated by Eleanor's ragged breaths and the soft creak of the bed.
"That's it," Elizabeth coaxed. "Open for me. Let me feel all of you."
Eleanor's hips rolled instinctively, meeting each thrust, chasing the pleasure that built within her like a storm. The ribbons at her wrists grew taut as she pulled against them, the silk biting gently into her skin, a reminder of her surrender. She was laid bare, body and soul, and the vulnerability only heightened every touch, every whisper, every deliberate stroke of Elizabeth's fingers.
"I can feel you getting close," Elizabeth murmured, leaning down to nip at Eleanor's earlobe. "Your body is tightening around me. You're so close, aren't you, my love?"
"Yes," Eleanor panted. "Don't stop. Please don't stop."
"I won't stop. I'll never stop giving you this." Elizabeth's tongue traced the shell of Eleanor's ear, her breath hot and quick. "Come for me, Eleanor. Come apart for me. Let me feel you shatter."
The coil snapped. The orgasm crashed through Eleanor like a wave, pulling her under, drowning her in sensation so intense it bordered on pain. She cried out Elizabeth's name, her body convulsing around the queen's fingers, her spine curving off the bed. Elizabeth held her through it, her fingers gentle now, stroking slowly as the aftershocks rippled through Eleanor's body.
"That's it, my darling. Let go. I've got you. I've got you."
The waves subsided slowly, leaving Eleanor trembling and breathless. Elizabeth withdrew her fingers and brought them to her lips, tasting Eleanor with a smile of pure satisfaction. Then she lowered her head and pressed a kiss to Eleanor's inner thigh, tasting the salt of her skin, breathing in the musk of their shared pleasure.
"Beautiful," she said again. "You're so beautiful."
Eleanor tugged weakly at the ribbons. "Untie me. I want to hold you."
Elizabeth leaned over her and loosened the knots, freeing Eleanor's wrists. The ribbons fell away, and Eleanor immediately reached for Elizabeth, pulling her down into an embrace. Elizabeth came willingly, curling against her side, her head resting on Eleanor's shoulder.
"I love you," Eleanor said, the words falling from her lips without thought, without fear.
Elizabeth lifted her head, her eyes wide. "Say that again."
"I love you, Bess. I love you more than I thought it was possible to love anyone."
Elizabeth's smile was radiant, tearful, beautiful. "And I love you, Eleanor Hartley. My healer. My advisor. My heart."
They lay together in the firelight, the ribbons scattered across the bed like fallen petals. Eleanor's wrists were marked with faint red lines, not from pain but from the gentle pressure of the silk. She touched them, feeling a strange pride in the marks, in the evidence of their trust.
"Will we do this again?" Eleanor asked.
Elizabeth traced the line of Eleanor's jaw with her fingertip. "If you wish it. There's so much more to explore. So many ways to give and take pleasure. But only if you want it."
"I want it," Eleanor said. "I want everything with you."
Elizabeth kissed her, slow and deep, and Eleanor felt the truth of it settle into her bones. She had come to court as a healer, an outsider, a woman of no consequence. Now she lay in the queen's bed, her body marked with silk, her heart full to bursting.
Outside, the night deepened, and the candles burned low. But in the warmth of the bed, wrapped in Elizabeth's arms, Eleanor felt safe. She felt seen. She felt loved.
And for the first time in her life, she felt like she truly belonged somewhere.
Treason's Shadow
The morning had dawned grey and heavy with mist when the note arrived. Eleanor was tending her small herb garden near the kitchens, fingers deep in damp soil, when a page boy pressed a crumpled parchment into her palm and vanished before she could speak.
She unfolded it with soil-stained fingers. The handwriting was hasty, nearly illegible.
Mistress Hartley. Come to the east gallery at once. Do not speak to anyone. Your life depends on it.
No signature. No seal.
Eleanor's pulse thundered in her ears. She rinsed her hands in the rain barrel and walked with forced calm through the winding corridors of Whitehall. The east gallery was largely abandoned, used for storing old tapestries and broken furniture. She slipped through the door and found a young clerk waiting, his face ashen.
"Mistress Hartley," he whispered. "I didn't know who else to trust. I work in Lady Walsingham's household."
Eleanor's blood went cold. "What have you discovered?"
The clerk produced a folded letter, its wax seal already broken. "She's been corresponding with Catholic sympathizers in the north. They speak of removing the queen. Of poison."
Eleanor took the letter with trembling hands. The words swam before her eyes. The heretic queen must fall. The herbalist who attends her could be persuaded or replaced.
They knew about her. They knew.
"How long have you had this?" Eleanor demanded, her voice sharper than she intended.
"Since last night. I couldn't bring it to the queen's guard. Lady Walsingham has spies everywhere. I thought of you because... because I've seen you in the gardens with Her Majesty. You care for her."
Eleanor folded the letter carefully and tucked it into her bodice. "You've done well. Stay silent. Tell no one you spoke to me."
She left the gallery with her mind racing. The corridors of Whitehall suddenly felt like a maze of traps. Every servant who passed could be a spy. Every shadow could hide a blade.
She found Elizabeth in the privy chamber, reviewing documents with Cecil. The queen looked up as Eleanor entered, her dark eyes sharp with immediate concern.
"Leave us," Elizabeth commanded, and Cecil bowed out without question.
The moment the door closed, Eleanor crossed the room and pressed the letter into Elizabeth's hands. "My lady. Read this. I received it moments ago from a clerk in Lady Walsingham's employ."
Elizabeth's face went pale as she read. Her hands, usually so steady, trembled slightly. "They mean to poison me. Through you."
"Or replace me with someone who would do their bidding," Eleanor said. "Your Majesty, we must act. Lady Walsingham must be questioned, her correspondence seized."
Elizabeth set the letter down and met Eleanor's eyes. The mask of the queen slipped, and Eleanor saw the woman beneath. Afraid. Vulnerable. And furious.
"I knew she was ambitious," Elizabeth said quietly. "I didn't know she was treasonous."
"We have proof now. We can move against her before she moves against us."
Elizabeth reached out and took Eleanor's hand. Her grip was fierce. "You could've taken this to the guard. You came to me first."
"I will always come to you first," Eleanor said. "You are my queen. You are more than my queen."
Something shifted in Elizabeth's expression. The fear remained, but it was overlaid with something else. Something fierce and possessive.
"Stay with me tonight," Elizabeth said. "I need you close."
Eleanor nodded, her throat tight. "I won't leave your side."
The hours that followed were a blur of activity. Elizabeth summoned her most trusted guards. Lady Walsingham was placed under house arrest. Her chambers were searched, and more letters were found. The plot was real. The danger was real.
By the time night fell, Eleanor was exhausted. But when she entered Elizabeth's private chambers, she found the queen standing by the window, staring out at the dark gardens.
"My lady," Eleanor said softly. "You should rest."
Elizabeth turned. Her eyes were red-rimmed but dry. "I can't rest. Every time I close my eyes, I see a cup of wine being handed to me. I see your face, and then I see you gone, replaced by someone with murder in their heart."
Eleanor crossed to her and took her hands. "I'm here. I'm not gone."
"But you could've been. If that clerk had been loyal to her instead of to us, you could've been the one to bring me poison, not knowing what it was."
"I would never—"
"I know." Elizabeth's voice cracked. "I know you wouldn't. But the thought of losing you, Eleanor. The thought of you being used against me, or harmed because of me. It's unbearable."
Eleanor pulled Elizabeth into her arms. The queen's body was stiff at first, then softened, her face pressing into Eleanor's shoulder.
"We're both still here," Eleanor whispered. "We have time. We have each other."
Elizabeth pulled back and looked at her. The vulnerability in her eyes was raw, unguarded. "I need you tonight. Not as my advisor. Not as my healer. I need you as my love."
Eleanor's breath caught. "You have me. Always."
They moved to the bed with an urgency that bordered on desperation. Elizabeth's hands were everywhere, pulling at Eleanor's gown, her own hair coming loose from its pins. There was none of the careful ritual of their previous encounters. This was raw and hungry and fueled by the terror of what had almost been lost.
Eleanor pushed Elizabeth onto the bed and climbed over her, straddling her hips. The queen's eyes widened, then darkened with approval.
"Bold tonight," Elizabeth murmured.
"Tonight I need to feel you alive beneath me," Eleanor said. "I need to know you're real and safe and mine."
She bent down and captured Elizabeth's mouth in a kiss that was all teeth and tongue and desperate need. Elizabeth moaned into her mouth and arched up against her, her hips rolling beneath Eleanor's weight. The kiss deepened, became something ravenous. Eleanor nipped at Elizabeth's lower lip, then soothed the sting with her tongue. Elizabeth's breath hitched, and her fingers dug into Eleanor's shoulders.
Eleanor's hands found the laces of Elizabeth's gown and pulled them loose with impatient tugs. The fabric fell away, revealing pale skin that gleamed in the candlelight. She pressed her lips to Elizabeth's throat, feeling the pulse there fluttering fast beneath her mouth. She kissed lower, tracing the delicate line of Elizabeth's collarbone, then the swell of her breasts above her shift.
Elizabeth gasped and tangled her fingers in Eleanor's hair. "Yes. Don't stop."
"I won't," Eleanor promised against her skin. "Not until you've forgotten everything but my name."
She pulled the shift down, baring Elizabeth's breasts to the cool air and the warm candlelight. The queen's nipples were already tight, flushed pink. Eleanor lowered her head and took one into her mouth, swirling her tongue around it, then sucking gently. Elizabeth's back arched off the bed, and a broken sound escaped her lips.
Eleanor lavished attention on first one breast and then the other, licking, kissing, gently biting until Elizabeth was writhing beneath her. She worked her way down Elizabeth's body, pressing open-mouthed kisses to her stomach, her hips, the soft skin of her inner thighs. The queen's legs fell open willingly, and Eleanor could see the glistening evidence of her arousal.
Eleanor looked up and met Elizabeth's eyes. "I love you. I will protect you with my life."
Elizabeth's eyes glistened. "And I you."
Eleanor lowered her head and tasted Elizabeth for the first time without the careful restraint of their previous encounters. This was not about building slowly to a peak. This was about devouring, about claiming, about proving that they were both still alive. She traced the length of Elizabeth's folds with her tongue, gathering the slick wetness, savoring the taste of her. Elizabeth cried out and bucked against her mouth.
Eleanor found the swollen bud at her center and circled it with her tongue, slow at first, then faster. She slipped a finger inside Elizabeth, feeling the tight heat clench around her. Elizabeth's hands flew to the bedclothes, gripping them in white-knuckled fists. Her breath came in ragged gasps.
"Eleanor. Eleanor, please."
Eleanor added a second finger, curling them as she thrust, finding the spot that made Elizabeth's hips jerk. She took Elizabeth's clit into her mouth and sucked, and the queen shattered. Her inner walls clenched and fluttered around Eleanor's fingers as she came with a cry that was half sob, half relief. Her body shuddered through wave after wave of pleasure.
Eleanor did not stop. She gentled her touch but kept her mouth on Elizabeth, her fingers still moving, drawing out the aftershocks until Elizabeth was trembling and oversensitive. Only then did she withdraw, pressing a soft kiss to Elizabeth's inner thigh.
But Elizabeth reached down and pulled her back up. "I'm not done with you yet."
The queen's hands, still shaking, found the laces of Eleanor's gown. She undressed Eleanor with a reverence that made her chest ache, kissing each inch of skin as it was revealed. When Eleanor was bare before her, Elizabeth sat up and pushed her back against the pillows.
"My turn," Elizabeth whispered.
The queen's mouth was hot and sure on Eleanor's skin. She kissed her throat, her breasts, her stomach. When she settled between Eleanor's thighs, Eleanor's hands flew to Elizabeth's loose hair, gripping it.
Elizabeth's tongue found Eleanor's center and a moan tore from Eleanor's throat. The queen took her time, mapping every fold, every sensitive place. She slid two fingers inside Eleanor and began to thrust in a slow, devastating rhythm while her tongue worked circles around Eleanor's clit.
"God, Elizabeth," Eleanor gasped. "I can't... I won't last..."
"Then don't," Elizabeth murmured against her. "Come for me. Let me feel you."
The command undid her. Eleanor came apart with a keening cry, her body clenching around Elizabeth's fingers, her hips grinding against the queen's mouth. Elizabeth held her through it, not stopping until Eleanor lay spent and trembling.
Then Elizabeth crawled up and gathered Eleanor in her arms.
Elizabeth buried her face in Eleanor's neck. "I thought I might lose you."
"You won't lose me," Eleanor said. "I won't allow it."
They lay together in the flickering candlelight, holding each other. The fear was still there, a shadow at the edge of the room. But it was muted now, pushed back by the warmth of their bodies and the certainty of their bond.
"I'll have Lady Walsingham questioned thoroughly," Elizabeth said eventually, her voice steadier. "Her co-conspirators will be found. This threat will be eliminated."
"And after?"
Elizabeth lifted her head and met Eleanor's eyes. "After, we continue. You'll remain at my side. My healer. My love."
Eleanor pressed a kiss to Elizabeth's forehead. "I'm yours. Whatever comes, I'm yours."
The queen smiled, a real smile that reached her eyes. "Then we face this together."
Outside, the wind rattled the windows. Somewhere in the darkness, enemies plotted. But in this room, in this bed, there was only the two of them, tangled together and unbroken.
Advisor Ascendant
The morning light slanted through the tall windows of the privy chamber, casting golden rectangles across the polished floor. Eleanor stood at the queen's side, hands clasped before her, watching as the last of the privy councillors filed out. Lord Burghley had nodded to her on his way past, a gesture of acknowledgment that would have seemed impossible mere weeks ago.
Elizabeth let out a long breath as the door closed, the regal mask slipping from her features like wax melting in heat. She turned to Eleanor, those dark eyes bright with triumph.
"You were right," she said, her voice carrying both wonder and something deeper, something warmer. "About the Spanish envoy. About his true purpose here."
Eleanor allowed herself a small smile. "I'm glad my sources proved reliable, Your Majesty."
"Bess," the queen corrected, stepping closer. "We're alone now. Call me Bess."
Eleanor's heart fluttered at the familiar intimacy. "Bess, then. I'm glad my sources proved reliable."
"More than reliable. You uncovered a plot that would have cost me dearly." Elizabeth reached out, fingers brushing Eleanor's sleeve. "The man was feeding information to Mary's supporters. You saw what no one else did."
"I saw patterns," Eleanor said quietly. "Herbs teach you about patterns. Which plants grow together, which thrive in shadow, which in sun. People aren't so different. The envoy spoke too smoothly, smiled too readily, asked too many questions about your health."
"And now he sits in the Tower, singing like a canary about his mistress's plans." Elizabeth's laugh was sharp, triumphant. "You've given me a weapon, Eleanor. Not just information, but confidence. I acted on your counsel and it proved true."
Eleanor felt the weight of those words settle into her chest like a stone dropped into still water. She was no longer merely the queen's healer, or even her secret lover. She was becoming something more, something that had no name in this court of titled lords and inherited power.
"I serve you," Eleanor said simply. "In whatever way I can."
"And you serve me better than any of them." Elizabeth's voice dropped lower, taking on a husky quality that made Eleanor's skin prickle with awareness. "Better than all their armies and alliances and endless petitions. You see me, Eleanor. Not the crown, not the throne, not the legend. Me."
"I do."
"Then come." Elizabeth took her hand, the grip firm and certain. "I'd celebrate this victory. With you. Only you."
She led Eleanor not to the great bedchamber but to a smaller room beyond, one Eleanor had not seen before. It was a library of sorts, lined with books and maps, a large desk covered in papers, a low couch near the fireplace where a fire crackled despite the mild autumn weather.
"My private study," Elizabeth said, closing the door behind them. "Few have ever entered here. Even Walsingham doesn't know all its secrets."
Eleanor looked around, taking in the evidence of the queen's mind at work. Notes in Elizabeth's hand, maps with markings, books open to pages on philosophy and statecraft. This was the engine room of the realm, hidden behind the pageantry of court.
"It suits you," Eleanor said. "More than the throne room does."
Elizabeth laughed, a genuine sound that warmed the small space. "You're the only one who'd say such a thing. The only one who could."
She moved to Eleanor, hands coming up to frame Eleanor's face. "I've spent my life surrounded by people who want something from me. Power, land, favor, money, influence. You wanted nothing. You only wanted to heal me."
"That's not nothing," Eleanor whispered.
"No. It's everything." Elizabeth kissed her, soft and slow, a kiss of gratitude and wonder rather than hunger. When she pulled back, her eyes were bright with unshed tears. "I don't know what I did to deserve you, Eleanor Hartley. But I thank God every night that you came to my court."
Eleanor's throat tightened with emotion. "As do I. Though I never imagined such a fate when I left my village."
"Fate." Elizabeth smiled, the word rolling off her tongue like honey. "Yes. I think it was fate. Destiny. Something beyond our understanding."
She stepped back, hands sliding down Eleanor's arms to take her hands. "Today, I want to celebrate not as queen and subject, but as two women who found each other in this strange, dangerous world. Will you allow me that?"
Eleanor nodded, voice caught in her throat.
Elizabeth led her to the couch before the fire. The flames cast dancing shadows across the walls, creating a private world of warmth and light. Elizabeth sat, pulling Eleanor down beside her, close enough that their thighs pressed together through layers of velvet and silk.
"I've thought about you all day," Elizabeth said, fingers tracing patterns on Eleanor's palm. "Even as I dismissed the council and signed the warrants and played the part of the Virgin Queen, I was thinking of you. Of your hands. Your voice. The way you look at me."
"And I of you," Eleanor admitted. "I could barely focus on my herbs. I kept imagining your face when you realized the envoy had trapped himself in his own lies."
"You saw that, did you? From the gallery?"
"I saw your eyes narrow. The slight tilt of your head. I knew you had him then."
Elizabeth laughed again, the sound rich and full. "You know my tells better than any spymaster. I'll have to be careful around you."
"Never careful," Eleanor said, surprising herself with her boldness. "Never with me."
Elizabeth's breath caught. "No. Not with you."
She leaned in, and this time the kiss was different. Hungrier. More demanding. Her hand slid to the back of Eleanor's neck, fingers tangling in the loose strands of auburn hair that had escaped their pins. Eleanor responded in kind, her own hands finding Elizabeth's waist, pulling her closer until there was nothing between them but the rustle of fabric and the heat of shared breath.
The fire crackled and popped, the only sound in the room beyond their breathing. Elizabeth's fingers worked at the ties of Eleanor's gown, not with the frantic urgency of their last encounter but with deliberate, almost ceremonial care. Each fastener released was a gift, a revelation.
"I want to see you," Elizabeth murmured against Eleanor's lips. "All of you. Not just in darkness or shadow. In the light."
Eleanor helped her, shrugging off the heavy outer gown, then the underdress, until she sat in her thin shift, the firelight painting her skin in shades of gold and amber. Elizabeth's gaze traveled over her with an appreciation that made Eleanor feel beautiful, powerful, seen.
"Your turn," Eleanor said, her voice steady despite the racing of her heart.
Elizabeth rose, and Eleanor helped her undo the elaborate fastenings of her royal gown. Layer by layer, the queen shed her public persona. The stiff bodice, the farthingale, the ornate sleeves, all fell away until Elizabeth stood before her in nothing but her shift, red-gold hair tumbling over her shoulders.
She was not the young woman of the portraits, but Eleanor had never wanted youth. She wanted this woman, this queen, this warrior who had survived betrayal and danger and loss. The silver threads in Elizabeth's hair, the fine lines around her eyes, the slight softening at her waist, all spoke of a life fully lived, a spirit that had endured.
"You're beautiful," Eleanor said, and meant it with her whole heart.
Elizabeth's eyes glistened. "You make me feel beautiful."
She knelt before Eleanor, a queen on her knees, and the power of that gesture stole Eleanor's breath. Elizabeth's hands found the hem of Eleanor's shift, pushing it upward, and Eleanor raised her arms to let it be pulled away entirely. She sat naked before the fire, before her queen, and felt no shame, only a profound sense of rightness.
Elizabeth leaned in, pressing her lips to Eleanor's knee, then higher, trailing kisses up the inside of her thigh. The stubble of her chin grazed Eleanor's sensitive skin, sending shivers cascading through her body. Eleanor's head fell back against the cushions, eyes closing as sensation bloomed through her. Elizabeth's hands were on her hips, steadying her, grounding her.
"I want to taste you," Elizabeth said, her voice thick with desire. "I want to know every part of you."
"Yes," Eleanor breathed. "Yes."
Elizabeth's mouth found her center, and Eleanor gasped, hands flying to Elizabeth's hair, not to guide but to hold, to anchor herself in the overwhelming pleasure. Elizabeth was unhurried, methodical, learning Eleanor's body with her tongue and lips. She traced slow circles at first, teasing the sensitive flesh, tasting the wetness that had gathered there. Then she found the rhythms that made Eleanor moan, the pressures that made her arch, and she built upon them with patient, devastating skill.
Elizabeth's tongue moved in deliberate strokes, each one sending waves of heat radiating outward from where her mouth met Eleanor's flesh. She slipped a finger inside, then another, curving them upward to find the place that made Eleanor cry out. The dual sensation of tongue and fingers was exquisite, building a tension that wound tighter and tighter with each passing moment.
The firelight flickered. The shadows danced. Eleanor let herself fall into the sensation, into the trust that bound them together. This was not submission, not in the way of their earlier encounters. This was partnership, a give and take that flowed between them like the tide.
Elizabeth varied her pace, sometimes quickening, sometimes slowing to a maddening crawl that left Eleanor whimpering with need. She would bring Eleanor to the edge, then ease back, letting the tension recede just enough before building it again, higher than before. The pleasure was a living thing, ebbing and flowing under Elizabeth's expert touch.
"Bess," Eleanor gasped, her fingers tightening in that red-gold hair. "Bess, please."
Elizabeth responded by increasing the pressure of her tongue, her fingers moving faster now, curling and thrusting with a rhythm that matched the pounding of Eleanor's heart. The tension coiled at the base of Eleanor's spine, spreading through her belly, her thighs, her chest, until every nerve was alight with it.
When Eleanor's climax crested, she cried out, not holding back, not muffling the sound against her hand. The release crashed through her in waves, each one more intense than the last, and Elizabeth held her through it, gentling her with soft touches and whispered words until Eleanor's breathing slowed and the tremors subsided.
Then Eleanor sat up, pulling Elizabeth into her arms, reversing their positions. Elizabeth lay back on the couch, her shift rucked up around her hips, eyes dark with want. Eleanor kissed her way down Elizabeth's body, pausing at her breasts to pay homage with her mouth. She took one nipple between her lips, swirling her tongue around it until it peaked, then gave the same attention to the other. Elizabeth arched beneath her, a soft moan escaping her throat.
Eleanor continued downward, pressing kisses to the soft skin of Elizabeth's belly, the curve of her hip, the crease of her thigh. She could smell Elizabeth's arousal, musky and warm, and it made her own desire flare anew.
"Let me," Eleanor said. "Let me give you what you gave me."
Elizabeth's only answer was a moan as Eleanor's mouth found its target. Eleanor used everything she'd learned, every observation she'd made of Elizabeth's responses, every sigh and shudder and whispered direction. She traced the folds of Elizabeth's sex with her tongue, tasting her, learning her, before settling on the swollen bud at her center. She sucked gently at first, then with increasing pressure, matching the rhythm of Elizabeth's hips as they rose to meet her mouth.
Elizabeth's hands twisted in Eleanor's hair, hips rising to meet Eleanor's mouth. Her breath came in sharp gasps, and Eleanor could feel the tension building in her thighs, in her belly, in the way she called Eleanor's name like a prayer.
"Eleanor, Eleanor, please, I'm close, I'm so close."
Eleanor doubled her efforts, finding the perfect rhythm, the perfect pressure. She slipped two fingers inside Elizabeth, feeling the walls clench around her as she curved them upward. Elizabeth's cry was immediate, her body arching off the couch, and Eleanor matched the thrust of her fingers to the stroke of her tongue until Elizabeth shattered above her, a cry of release that seemed to come from somewhere deep and long buried. The walls of her sex pulsed around Eleanor's fingers, and Eleanor held her through it, gentling her with soft kisses and gentle hands, the same way Elizabeth had done for her.
They lay tangled together afterward, the fire burning low, the room warm and quiet. Elizabeth's head rested on Eleanor's shoulder, her hand tracing idle patterns on Eleanor's stomach.
"I've never had this," Elizabeth said softly. "Not with anyone. This equalness. This balance."
"Nor have I," Eleanor admitted. "I didn't know it was possible."
"It's possible. With you." Elizabeth lifted her head, meeting Eleanor's eyes. "You're my advisor now, Eleanor. Not just my healer, not just my lover. My true advisor. The one whose counsel I trust above all others."
Eleanor's heart swelled. "I don't have the training. The experience."
"You have wisdom. You have insight. You have the courage to tell me what I need to hear, not what I want to hear." Elizabeth kissed her softly. "That's worth more than all the education in the world."
They lay in silence for a long moment, the weight of Elizabeth's words settling between them, becoming truth.
"What will the court say?" Eleanor asked finally. "When they see you consulting a village herbalist on matters of state?"
"Let them say what they will. I'm the queen." Elizabeth's voice carried iron beneath the warmth. "And you've earned your place at my side. By wit, by loyalty, by love."
Eleanor felt tears prick at her eyes. "I love you, Bess. I didn't mean to. I didn't come to court seeking this. But I love you."
"And I love you." Elizabeth's voice cracked. "I thought I'd closed myself off from love. I thought it was a weakness I couldn't afford. But you've shown me that love is strength. That trusting you makes me stronger, not weaker."
They held each other as the fire died to embers, the room growing cool around them. Neither wanted to move, to break the spell, to return to the world of courtiers and councils and carefully guarded secrets.
But eventually Elizabeth stirred. "I must dress. There's a meeting with the French ambassador soon."
"And I must prepare more of your tonic. The one for your headaches." Eleanor smiled. "Though I suspect your headaches will be fewer now, with the Spanish threat contained."
"My headaches are always fewer when you're near." Elizabeth kissed her one last time, deep and lingering. "Stay close today. I want you in the gallery during the audience. Watch the ambassador's face. Tell me what you see."
"I will."
They dressed in silence, helping each other with laces and pins, a domestic intimacy that felt as precious as any grand passion. When they were both presentable, Elizabeth caught Eleanor's hand one last time.
"Thank you," she said. "For everything. For being exactly who you are."
Eleanor squeezed her hand. "Thank you for letting me."
She left the study first, slipping through the hidden passages she'd learned to navigate, emerging in her small chamber near the stillroom. Her heart was full, her body satisfied, her future uncertain but bright.
She was no longer just a village herbalist summoned to court. She was the queen's shadow advisor, her secret lover, her most trusted confidante. And she would use every bit of that influence to protect Elizabeth, to serve the realm, and to nurture the love that had grown so unexpectedly between them.
The court would never know the full truth. But Eleanor would know. Elizabeth would know. And that was enough.
Heart's Coronation
The fire had burned low, casting long shadows across the royal bedchamber. Eleanor lay on her side, her fingers tracing lazy patterns across Elizabeth's bare shoulder, following the curve of bone and muscle beneath skin still warm from their lovemaking. The queen's breathing had slowed, but Eleanor knew she was not asleep. There was a tension in her body that had nothing to do with the pleasure they had shared.
"You're thinking again," Eleanor murmured. "I can feel it in the way you hold yourself."
Elizabeth's lips curved in a faint smile. "You know me too well, my love. It's dangerous."
"Dangerous for whom?"
"For me. For you." Elizabeth turned onto her back, staring up at the canopy above. "I've spent my entire life building walls, Eleanor. Stone by stone, year by year. And you've managed to climb over every single one."
Eleanor propped herself on her elbow, studying the queen's profile in the fading firelight. The sharp line of her jaw, the slight furrow between her brows, the way her chest rose and fell with each careful breath. She looked younger like this, stripped of her gowns and crowns and carefully constructed majesty.
"I don't want to climb over them," Eleanor said softly. "I want you to let me in."
Elizabeth's hand found hers, squeezing tight. "I'm afraid."
Those two words, spoken so simply, struck Eleanor like a blow. She had never heard Elizabeth admit fear before. Not during the treason plot, not when they had almost been discovered, not even in the darkest moments of their stolen nights together.
"Of what?" Eleanor asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
"Of what happens when someone truly knows me. When you truly know me." Elizabeth turned her head, meeting Eleanor's gaze. Her dark eyes glistened with unshed tears. "Everyone wants something from the queen. Power or favor or wealth or protection. But you..." She trailed off, shaking her head.
"I want you," Eleanor finished. "Just you. Not the crown, not the throne, not your influence. You, Elizabeth. The woman who laughs at her own jokes and cries when she thinks no one is watching. The woman who loves the smell of rain on stone and the taste of honey on bread."
A tear slipped down Elizabeth's cheek. She made no move to wipe it away. "And what happens when you see all of me? The parts I keep hidden even from myself?"
"I've already seen them," Eleanor said gently. "I've seen you rage and weep and tremble. I've seen you command armies with your voice and crumble in my arms. There is nothing you can show me that will make me love you less."
Elizabeth let out a shuddering breath. "I don't deserve you."
"Don't." Eleanor's voice was firmer now. "Don't do that. Don't push me away with self-deprecation and royal distance. I'm not one of your courtiers, Elizabeth. I'm not here to be dismissed."
The queen's eyes widened slightly, a flicker of surprise crossing her features. Eleanor felt a small thrill of confidence. Months ago, she would never have dared speak to the queen this way. But they had moved beyond titles and formalities. They had moved into something far more intimate and far more terrifying.
"You're right," Elizabeth said after a long moment. "And I'm sorry. It's a habit. A defense."
"I know." Eleanor softened, her hand moving to cup Elizabeth's cheek. "But you don't need to defend yourself against me. Not anymore."
Elizabeth turned into her touch, pressing a kiss to Eleanor's palm. "I've never had this. Someone who sees me and doesn't want to use what they see."
"Neither have I." Eleanor shifted closer, her body fitting against Elizabeth's side. "I was so afraid when I first came to court. I thought I would be devoured. And in a way, I was. But not in the way I expected."
"What do you mean?"
Eleanor was quiet for a moment, gathering her thoughts. "I thought I would lose myself here. That the court would swallow me whole and I would become something I didn't recognize. And I have changed, it's true. But I didn't lose myself. I found myself. I found parts of me I didn't know existed."
"Like what?"
"Like courage. Like desire." Eleanor's voice cracked slightly. "Like the capacity to love someone so completely that it terrifies me. I never knew I could feel this way. I never knew I could be this way."
Elizabeth pulled her closer, wrapping her arms around Eleanor's waist. "And now? Now that you know?"
"Now I'm afraid too." Eleanor laughed softly, a sound without humor. "Afraid of losing this. Of losing you. Of going back to being the person I was before, alone in my garden with nothing but herbs and memories."
"You'll never be that person again," Elizabeth said fiercely. "I won't allow it."
"You can't control everything, Your Majesty."
"I can control this." Elizabeth's hand found Eleanor's hair, stroking through the auburn strands. "I can control my own heart, and it belongs to you. It has belonged to you since the moment you walked into my chambers with your steady hands and your quiet confidence and your damned herbs that actually worked."
Eleanor laughed, a real laugh this time. "Is that what won you over? My herbal remedies?"
"It was part of it." Elizabeth smiled, but her eyes remained serious. "You didn't treat me like a queen. You treated me like a patient. Like a person. Do you know how rare that is? How many people in my life see the crown before they see the woman wearing it?"
"I see you," Eleanor said simply. "I've always seen you."
They lay in silence for a while, the fire crackling softly, the night pressing in around them. Eleanor could feel Elizabeth's heartbeat against her chest, steady and strong. She matched her breathing to it, letting herself sink into the warmth of their shared bed.
"Tell me something you've never told anyone," Elizabeth whispered suddenly.
Eleanor blinked. "What?"
"A secret. A fear. A dream. I want to know all of you, Eleanor. The way you know me."
The request hung in the air between them, heavy with significance. Eleanor felt her throat tighten. There were so many things she had kept hidden, so many parts of herself she had buried deep. But if she wanted Elizabeth to trust her completely, she had to offer the same in return.
"I used to dream of running away," Eleanor said slowly. "When I was a girl, I would imagine leaving everything behind. My village, my family, my responsibilities. I would go somewhere no one knew me, somewhere I could start over as someone entirely different."
"Where would you go?"
"I don't know. Somewhere by the sea, maybe. I've never seen the sea." Eleanor's voice grew wistful. "I would have a small cottage and a garden full of herbs, and I would be alone. Completely alone."
"That sounds lonely."
"It does, doesn't it?" Eleanor laughed quietly. "But when you've spent your whole life surrounded by people who need things from you, solitude feels like freedom. I thought if I was alone, I wouldn't have to carry anyone else's burdens. I could just... be."
"And now?" Elizabeth asked. "Do you still dream of that?"
Eleanor considered the question carefully. "No. Not anymore. Now I dream of this." She pressed her hand to Elizabeth's chest, feeling the steady beat of her heart. "I dream of a life where I can love you openly. Where I don't have to hide in shadows and slip through secret passages. Where I can wake up beside you every morning and fall asleep beside you every night."
"That's a dangerous dream."
"I know." Eleanor's voice was soft but steady. "But it's the only one I have."
Elizabeth was quiet for so long that Eleanor began to worry she had said too much. But then the queen shifted, rolling onto her side to face Eleanor fully. Her hand came up to cup Eleanor's face, her thumb tracing the line of her cheekbone.
"I've never told anyone this," Elizabeth said, her voice barely audible. "But sometimes I wish I wasn't queen. Sometimes I wish I was just a woman. An ordinary woman who could marry for love and bear children and grow old with someone who actually wanted to grow old with her."
"Elizabeth..."
"I know it's foolish. I know I was born to rule, that God placed me on this throne for a purpose. But there are nights when I lie awake and wonder what my life would have been like if I had been born a simple nobleman's daughter. If I could have chosen my own path."
"You would have been extraordinary no matter what you were born," Eleanor said. "It's in your blood. In your bones."
"Maybe." Elizabeth's smile was sad. "Or maybe I would have been content. Maybe I would have found happiness in small things. In a garden. In a lover's arms. In the simple pleasure of being alive."
"You can have those things now." Eleanor leaned forward, pressing her forehead against Elizabeth's. "You have them now. You have me. You have this."
"For how long?"
"As long as we're brave enough to hold on."
Elizabeth's breath hitched. "I don't know if I'm brave enough."
"You're the bravest person I've ever known." Eleanor kissed her gently, a soft brush of lips that said more than words ever could. "You've survived assassins and traitors and a court full of people who would tear you apart for power. You can survive this."
"Surviving isn't the same as living."
"Then let's live." Eleanor's hand slid down Elizabeth's side, tracing the curve of her hip. "Let's live together, for as long as we can. Let's steal every moment we can and hold onto it. Because it is precious. You are."
Elizabeth's eyes shimmered with tears. "I love you, Eleanor. I've never said that to anyone. Not truly. Not like this."
"I love you too." Eleanor's voice broke on the words. "I love you so much it frightens me."
"Then we'll be frightened together." Elizabeth kissed her again, deeper this time, her tongue sliding against Eleanor's in a slow, languid dance. "We'll be frightened and brave and foolish. We'll be everything, together."
Eleanor melted into the kiss, her body responding to Elizabeth's touch with an eagerness that still surprised her. They had made love so many times now, and yet each time felt new. Each time felt like a revelation.
Elizabeth rolled them over, pinning Eleanor beneath her with a gentle weight. Her dark hair fell around them like a curtain, shutting out the world. Her lips trailed down Eleanor's throat, leaving a path of fire in their wake. Eleanor arched into the touch, her hands tangling in Elizabeth's hair.
"You're beautiful," Elizabeth murmured against her skin. "Do you know that? Do you know how beautiful you are?"
"I know how you make me feel." Eleanor's breath came faster as Elizabeth's mouth found her collarbone, teeth grazing the delicate skin there. "And that's more than enough."
Elizabeth's hand slid down Eleanor's body, fingers tracing the curve of her breast, the dip of her waist, the swell of her hip. Each touch was deliberate, reverent, as if she was memorizing every inch of Eleanor's skin. Her palm cupped Eleanor's breast, her thumb circling the nipple until it peaked beneath her touch. Eleanor gasped, her back arching off the bed.
"I want to worship you," Elizabeth whispered. "I want to spend the rest of my life learning every part of you."
"Then take your time." Eleanor's voice was thick with desire. "We have all night."
Elizabeth smiled, a genuine smile that lit up her face. "We have more than that. We have forever."
She lowered her head, pressing kisses down Eleanor's stomach, her hips, her thighs. Eleanor shivered, her body trembling with anticipation. But Elizabeth took her time, savoring each moment. Her tongue traced patterns along the inside of Eleanor's thigh, teasing, tasting, drawing soft whimpers from Eleanor's lips.
Elizabeth's hands parted Eleanor's thighs gently but firmly, her breath warm against the slick heat between them. She pressed a kiss to the crease where thigh met hip, then another, each one closer to the center of Eleanor's desire. Eleanor's hands fisted in the sheets, her hips lifting instinctively, seeking more contact.
"Patience," Elizabeth whispered, her voice low and husky. "Let me love you properly."
When Elizabeth's mouth finally found her center, Eleanor cried out, her hands flying to grip the sheets. The sensation was overwhelming, not just physically but emotionally. This was more than pleasure. This was connection. This was love made tangible.
Elizabeth's tongue moved in slow, deliberate circles, drawing Eleanor higher and higher. She varied her rhythm, sometimes fast and urgent, sometimes slow and maddening. Her fingers joined the dance, sliding inside Eleanor with a gentle pressure that made her see stars. Eleanor's hips rocked against her mouth, her breath coming in ragged gasps. She could feel the pressure building, the familiar tension coiling in her core.
"Elizabeth," she gasped. "I'm close."
Elizabeth hummed against her, the vibration sending a shockwave through Eleanor's body. She increased her pace, her tongue flicking faster, her fingers curling to find that secret spot deep inside. Eleanor's world narrowed to the sensation of Elizabeth's mouth on her, her hands on her, her love surrounding her.
She came with a cry, her back arching off the bed, her vision going white. The waves crashed over her, one after another, each more intense than the last. Elizabeth stayed with her through every crest, gentling her through the aftershocks with soft kisses and whispered endearments. She pressed gentle kisses to Eleanor's thighs, her stomach, her hip, each one a benediction.
When Eleanor finally came back to herself, Elizabeth was lying beside her, propped on one elbow, watching her with an expression of pure adoration. Her lips were swollen, her chin glistening, and Eleanor felt a surge of desire so intense it took her breath away.
"You're incredible," Elizabeth said softly. "Every time, you surprise me."
Eleanor reached up, pulling her down for a kiss. She could taste herself on Elizabeth's lips, and the intimacy of it made her head spin. "And you haven't finished surprising me yet."
"Good." Elizabeth settled against her, her head on Eleanor's chest, her hand over Eleanor's heart. "I plan to surprise you for the rest of our lives."
Eleanor stroked her hair, feeling the weight of her body, the warmth of her breath. Outside, the first hints of dawn were beginning to lighten the sky. Soon they would have to part, to put on their masks and play their roles. But for now, in this moment, they were just two women in love.
"Thank you," Eleanor whispered. "For trusting me. For letting me in."
Elizabeth pressed a kiss to her skin. "Thank you for being worth trusting."
They lay together as the fire died and the sun rose, holding onto each other as if the world outside didn't exist. And in that small, sacred space, Eleanor felt something shift inside her. The fear was still there, lurking in the shadows. But so was something else. Something stronger.
Hope.
She held onto it, held onto Elizabeth, and let herself believe that maybe, just maybe, they could have this forever.
Eternal Court
The morning light crept through the leaded glass of Eleanor's chamber, painting golden patterns across the worn floorboards. She stood at the window, watching the courtyard below stir to life. Servants scurried between buildings while guards changed posts with practiced precision. Courtiers began their daily dance of ambition.
Three months had passed since she first crossed this threshold, a trembling village healer summoned by royal command. Now she stood in rooms granted by the queen herself, her hands steady, her heart full.
A soft knock came at the door. Eleanor's breath caught. She knew that rhythm. Two quick taps, a pause, then three more. Elizabeth's signal.
"Enter," she said, turning from the window.
The queen slipped through the door, closing it behind her with practiced silence. She wore a simple gown of deep green wool, her red-gold hair loose around her shoulders. No crown or jewels adorned her. Just Bess, as she became in these stolen moments.
"You shouldn't be here," Eleanor said, though her heart raced with joy. "The court will notice your absence."
"Let them notice." Elizabeth crossed the room, her hands reaching for Eleanor's. "Let them wonder. I'm the queen. I may go where I please."
Eleanor squeezed her fingers, marveling at how natural this felt now. The calluses on her own hands, earned from years of grinding herbs and tending gardens, pressed against Elizabeth's soft, pale skin. Their two worlds joined in this small space.
"You look troubled," Elizabeth said, tilting her head. "What weighs on your mind?"
Eleanor laughed softly. "Only the weight of my good fortune, Your Majesty. I was remembering my first day at court. How terrified I was. How certain I'd be sent back to my village in disgrace."
"And now?"
"Now I can't imagine leaving." Eleanor lifted Elizabeth's hand to her lips, pressing a kiss to her knuckles. "You've given me a life I never dared to dream of."
Elizabeth's eyes softened. "You've given me more than you know, Eleanor. More than power or counsel or healing. You've given me myself."
The words hung between them, heavy with meaning. Eleanor remembered the first time she had seen the queen, masked in layers of regal armor, her true self hidden beneath crowns and protocols. She remembered the slow unveiling, the tender moments when Elizabeth had let her see the woman beneath the monarch.
"Come," Elizabeth said, tugging her toward the door. "I want to show you something."
Eleanor followed, her hand still clasped in the queen's. They moved through the corridors with the ease of long practice, avoiding the main paths, slipping through servant passages and hidden doorways. Elizabeth knew every secret route in the palace, every shadow where they could steal a moment alone.
They emerged into the privy garden, a walled sanctuary reserved for the queen's private use. Morning dew still clung to the roses, their petals heavy with fragrance. A fountain gurgled in the center, its stone basin carved with mermaids and sea creatures.
"I used to come here as a girl," Elizabeth said, leading Eleanor to a stone bench beneath an ancient oak. "When the world pressed too close. When my sister's court felt like a prison."
Eleanor sat beside her, close enough to feel the warmth of her body. "And now?"
"Now it's our place." Elizabeth turned to face her, her dark eyes searching. "I've been thinking, Eleanor. About the future. About what we've built together."
Eleanor's heart quickened. "As have I."
"Lady Walsingham's schemes have been contained. The Spanish threat has been managed for now. My court is secure." Elizabeth took a breath. "But you and I... we exist in a fragile space. One wrong word, one careless glance, and everything could shatter."
"I know." Eleanor had thought of this many times, lying awake in her bed, listening to the night sounds of the palace. "I've made my peace with it. Whatever time you can give me, I'll treasure."
"But what if I could give you more?" Elizabeth's voice dropped to a whisper. "What if I could give you a place at court that no one would question? A role that would keep you close without raising suspicion?"
Eleanor frowned. "What do you mean?"
"I've spoken with Cecil. He believes you should be formally appointed as my personal physician. Not just a herbalist summoned when needed, but a permanent member of my household. With chambers near mine. With access to me at all hours."
The words took a moment to sink in. Eleanor's mind raced through the implications. A formal position. Official recognition. Constant proximity to the queen.
"He agreed?" Eleanor asked, amazed.
"He sees the wisdom in it. Your remedies have kept me healthy through two difficult seasons. The court has noticed. Even my enemies can't deny your skill." Elizabeth's smile was knowing. "And Cecil is nothing if not practical."
Eleanor felt tears prick at her eyes. "I don't know what to say."
"Say yes." Elizabeth took both her hands. "Say you'll stay. Not as a visitor, not as a temporary healer, but as part of my court. Part of my life."
"Yes." The word came out broken, raw with emotion. "Yes, of course, yes."
Elizabeth pulled her close, and Eleanor buried her face in the queen's hair, breathing in the scent of lavender and rose water. She felt Elizabeth's arms wrap around her, holding her tight.
"I was so afraid," Eleanor whispered. "When I first came here, I was so afraid of losing myself in this place. Of being swallowed by the court and forgotten."
"And now?"
"Now I've found myself. In you." Eleanor pulled back, meeting Elizabeth's gaze. "You've changed me, Bess. You've made me brave."
Elizabeth's hand came up to cup her cheek. "You were always brave, Eleanor. I simply gave you a reason to show it."
They kissed then, soft and slow, a promise sealed with warmth. Eleanor felt the familiar flutter in her chest, the heat that spread through her body whenever Elizabeth touched her. Three months, and the feeling had not dimmed. If anything, it had grown deeper, richer, more complex.
"I want to remember this moment," Eleanor said against Elizabeth's lips. "Forever. This garden, this morning, this feeling."
"Then let's make it unforgettable." Elizabeth stood, pulling Eleanor to her feet. "Come. I want to show you something else."
She led Eleanor deeper into the garden, past the roses and the fountain, to a small gate hidden behind a tangle of ivy. Elizabeth pushed it open, revealing a tiny enclosed space, a secret garden within the secret garden. A single bench sat beneath a canopy of jasmine, the air thick with its sweet perfume.
"I found this place when I was twelve," Elizabeth said, closing the gate behind them. "I've never shown it to anyone."
Eleanor looked around, taking in the high stone walls covered in climbing roses, the mossy flagstones, the single patch of sunlight that fell on the bench. "It's beautiful."
"It's ours now." Elizabeth turned to face her, her eyes dark with desire. "I want to love you here, Eleanor. In this place that's only ever been mine. I want to give myself to you completely."
Eleanor's breath caught. She stepped forward, her hands finding Elizabeth's waist. "I want that too. More than anything."
They came together slowly, deliberately, as if savoring every moment. Eleanor's hands moved up Elizabeth's sides, feeling the warmth of her body through the thin wool. Elizabeth's fingers tangled in Eleanor's hair, pulling her closer.
The kiss deepened, tongues meeting, breath mingling. Eleanor felt the familiar heat building, the ache that only Elizabeth could satisfy. She pressed closer, her body molding against the queen's.
Elizabeth pulled back, her eyes bright. "Undress me."
Eleanor's hands trembled as she worked the laces of Elizabeth's gown. The fabric fell away, revealing the pale skin beneath. She pushed the dress down over Elizabeth's shoulders, letting it pool at her feet.
Elizabeth stood before her in nothing but her shift, the thin linen doing little to hide the curves beneath. Eleanor reached out, tracing the line of her collarbone, the swell of her breasts visible through the gauzy fabric. The queen's nipples had already tightened, pressing against the linen, and Eleanor's mouth watered at the sight.
"You're so beautiful," Eleanor breathed.
"So are you." Elizabeth's hands found the fastenings of Eleanor's dress. "Let me see you."
Eleanor's gown joined Elizabeth's on the ground. Then her shift followed, and she stood bare before the queen, the morning air cool on her skin. Her own nipples hardened in the breeze, or perhaps from the way Elizabeth's gaze traveled hungrily over her body.
Elizabeth reached out, her fingers grazing Eleanor's nipple. Eleanor gasped, the touch sending sparks through her body. Elizabeth smiled, a slow, knowing smile, then rolled the sensitive peak between her thumb and forefinger, watching Eleanor's face contort with pleasure.
"Lie down," she said, gesturing to the bench. "Let me worship you."
Eleanor obeyed, stretching out on the cool stone. The jasmine above her swayed in the breeze, casting shifting shadows across her skin. Elizabeth knelt beside her, her hands moving over Eleanor's body with reverent slowness.
She kissed Eleanor's throat, her collarbone, the space between her breasts. Each touch was deliberate, a declaration of love made physical. Eleanor closed her eyes, giving herself over to the sensation.
Elizabeth's mouth found her nipple, tongue circling the sensitive peak before drawing it between her lips and sucking gently. Eleanor moaned, her back arching off the stone, her hands flying to Elizabeth's hair. The queen lavished attention on first one breast and then the other, her tongue flicking and swirling, her teeth grazing just enough to make Eleanor whimper.
Elizabeth's hand moved lower, fingers tracing the curve of her hip, the inside of her thigh. Eleanor spread her legs wider, inviting the touch, craving it. Elizabeth's fingers danced through the curls at the junction of her thighs, feeling the wetness that had already gathered there.
"I love the sounds you make," Elizabeth murmured against her skin. "I love knowing that I'm the one who draws them from you."
Eleanor's hands found Elizabeth's hair, tangling in the red-gold strands. "I love that you're the only one who hears them."
Elizabeth's fingers found her center, slick and ready. She circled slowly, teasing, building the tension with agonizing patience. She spread Eleanor's folds open, exposing the swollen bud of her clitoris, and traced around it with featherlight touches that made Eleanor squirm and gasp.
"Please," Eleanor whispered. "Please, Bess."
Elizabeth slid two fingers inside her, and Eleanor cried out, the sensation overwhelming. Elizabeth moved with slow, deep strokes, curling her fingers to find the spot within that made Eleanor see stars. Her thumb pressed against Eleanor's clit, rubbing in circles that matched the rhythm of her thrusting fingers.
Eleanor's world narrowed to the feeling of Elizabeth's hands, Elizabeth's mouth, Elizabeth's presence surrounding her. The jasmine scent mixed with the musk of arousal, the sound of their breathing filling the small garden. Wet, obscene sounds rose from where Elizabeth's fingers plunged in and out of Eleanor's body, and rather than feeling shame, Eleanor felt only deeper arousal.
"Look at me," Elizabeth said, her voice thick with desire. "I want to see your face when you come."
Eleanor opened her eyes, meeting Elizabeth's gaze. The intensity of it pushed her over the edge. She came with a broken cry, her body shuddering, her vision blurring, her inner walls clenching rhythmically around Elizabeth's fingers.
Elizabeth held her through it, her fingers gentle, her other hand stroking Eleanor's hair. When the waves subsided, Eleanor pulled her down for a kiss, tasting herself on Elizabeth's lips. The flavor was intoxicating, and she deepened the kiss, wanting more.
"My turn," Eleanor said, her voice hoarse.
She guided Elizabeth onto the bench, positioning her among the scattered cushions of jasmine petals. Elizabeth's shift had ridden up, and Eleanor pushed it higher, exposing the queen's body to her gaze. The queen of England lay before her, flushed and wanting, her legs parted in invitation.
Eleanor knelt between her legs, looking at the body before her. Elizabeth's sex glistened with arousal, the pink folds swollen and slick. Eleanor leaned down and pressed a kiss to Elizabeth's inner thigh, then another, working her way higher with maddening slowness.
"Eleanor," Elizabeth breathed, her voice strained. "Please."
Eleanor lowered her mouth to Elizabeth's center, tasting her for the first time in this sacred space. Elizabeth's gasp was like music, her hands fisting in Eleanor's hair as Eleanor's tongue found the places that made her moan. The taste of the queen was unlike anything else, sweet and musky and uniquely Elizabeth, and Eleanor drank it in like a woman dying of thirst.
Eleanor learned her anew, discovering the rhythms that made Elizabeth's breath catch, the pressure that made her cry out. She circled Elizabeth's clit with her tongue, then flicked it rapidly, then sucked gently, gauging the queen's reactions. Elizabeth's hips bucked and writhed beneath her ministrations.
She built the pleasure slowly, drawing it out, savoring every sound Elizabeth made. Eleanor slipped first one finger, then two, inside Elizabeth's tight channel, curling them as she had been taught, as she had learned the queen liked best. Elizabeth's inner walls gripped her fingers, hot and slick and pulsing with need.
"Eleanor," Elizabeth gasped. "I'm close. Don't stop."
Eleanor doubled her efforts, her tongue moving faster, her fingers thrusting deeper. Elizabeth's hips rose to meet her, her body tensing, her cries growing louder. The queen's thighs trembled on either side of Eleanor's head, her hands pulling painfully at Eleanor's hair, but Eleanor didn't care. She wanted to feel Elizabeth come apart beneath her mouth.
She came with a shuddering moan, her body arching off the bench, her inner walls clenching and releasing around Eleanor's fingers in waves. Eleanor stayed with her, gentling her through the aftershocks, pressing soft kisses to her thighs and her swollen sex as the tremors subsided.
When Elizabeth's breathing steadied, Eleanor crawled up to lie beside her, fitting their bodies together on the narrow bench. Elizabeth turned her head, pressing a kiss to Eleanor's forehead.
"I love you," Elizabeth said. "I've never said that to anyone. Not truly. Not like this."
Eleanor's heart swelled. "I love you too. With everything I am. With everything I'll become."
They lay together in the silence, the morning sun warming their skin, the jasmine perfuming the air. Eleanor traced patterns on Elizabeth's arm, memorizing the feel of her skin.
"What happens now?" Eleanor asked.
"Now we live." Elizabeth's voice was soft, certain. "We love. We rule. We protect what we've built."
"And if someone discovers us?"
"Then we face it together." Elizabeth turned, her eyes meeting Eleanor's. "I'm no longer afraid, Eleanor. Not of my court, not of my enemies, not of the future. Because I have you."
Eleanor felt tears slip down her cheeks. "I never imagined this. When I was a girl in my village, grinding herbs and dreaming of a larger life, I never imagined this."
"Neither did I." Elizabeth wiped away her tears with gentle fingers. "But here we are. Two women who found each other in a world that would never understand. And we'll make our own world. Within these walls, within these gardens, within each other."
Eleanor kissed her, a promise sealed with warmth. "Our own court. Our own kingdom."
"Our own eternity." Elizabeth smiled, her eyes bright with love. "As long as we have each other, we have everything."
They dressed slowly, helping each other with laces and buttons, stealing kisses between adjustments. When they emerged from the hidden garden, the sun was high, the court fully awake.
Elizabeth paused at the gate, turning to look back at the small sanctuary. "This will always be our place. Whenever the world grows too heavy, we'll come here."
Eleanor took her hand, squeezing it. "And we'll remember this morning. This moment. This beginning."
They walked back through the palace, their steps synchronized, their hearts beating as one. Servants bowed. Courtiers curtsied. The queen nodded, regal and composed, the mask firmly in place.
But Eleanor saw what lay beneath. The woman who had loved her in a garden of jasmine. The queen who had given her a home, a purpose, a life beyond her wildest dreams.
That night, in the queen's private chambers, they made love again. Slower this time, more tender, a celebration of the day's revelations. Eleanor mapped Elizabeth's body with her hands and mouth, learning every curve, every sensitive spot. She traced the line of Elizabeth's jaw with her lips, kissed the hollow of her throat, lingered at the swell of her breasts. Elizabeth's nipples hardened under her tongue, and she sucked them gently, feeling the queen's breath catch each time.
Elizabeth returned the favor, her touch reverent, her words soft and sweet. She explored Eleanor's body as if learning it for the first time, her fingers tracing the curve of Eleanor's waist, the dip of her hipbones, the soft skin of her inner thighs. She followed her fingers with her mouth, leaving a trail of kisses that made Eleanor tremble.
They took their time, bringing each other to the edge and back again, savoring the build of pleasure. When Eleanor finally entered Elizabeth with her fingers, the queen was already trembling, already close. Eleanor stroked her slowly, watching Elizabeth's face, drinking in every expression of pleasure that crossed her features. When Elizabeth came, it was with a soft cry, her body arching, her hands gripping the bedsheets.
Then Elizabeth turned the tables, pushing Eleanor back against the pillows and lowering her mouth to Eleanor's sex. Her tongue was skilled, practiced, knowing exactly where to touch and how. Eleanor tangled her hands in the sheets, her hips rising to meet Elizabeth's mouth. The queen slipped two fingers inside her while her tongue worked Eleanor's swollen clit, and Eleanor came undone, her climax crashing through her like a wave.
Afterward, they lay tangled together, the candles burning low. Elizabeth's head rested on Eleanor's chest, her breath warm against Eleanor's skin.
"I used to think I'd die alone," Elizabeth said, her voice barely a whisper. "That I'd spend my life surrounded by people who wanted my power, not my heart."
"And now?" Eleanor asked, stroking her hair.
"Now I know that I'll die loved. That I've found someone who sees me. All of me. The queen and the woman. The mask and the face beneath."
Eleanor pressed a kiss to the top of her head. "And I've found someone who makes me brave. Who gives me a reason to be more than I was."
Elizabeth lifted her head, her eyes shining in the candlelight. "We've saved each other, Eleanor. In ways the world will never know."
"Then let the world never know." Eleanor smiled. "Let this be our secret, our treasure, our eternal court."
Elizabeth kissed her, soft and sweet. "Our eternal court."
They slept wrapped in each other's arms, the night wind whispering through the curtains, the stars watching over their love. And in the morning, they would rise and face the world together, two women bound by a love that would never be spoken aloud but would never fade.
Eleanor had come to court as a stranger, a healer with trembling hands and a fearful heart. She had found a queen, a lover, a home. She had found herself.
And that, she thought, as she drifted into sleep with Elizabeth's warmth against her, was worth every risk, every fear, every moment of uncertainty.
Because love, true love, was its own kingdom. And she had found her place within it.
