The gravel road ended where the mountain began. Sadie Mercer killed the engine of her rental Jeep and sat for a moment, letting the silence settle around her. Dust still hung in the air behind the vehicle, a pale brown cloud that caught the late afternoon light and turned it amber. The drive had been brutal. Hours from the last town, much of that on a road that barely qualified as a track, winding higher into terrain that grew increasingly hostile with every mile.

She pulled the clipboard from her passenger seat and flipped through the pages one last time. Wolf Reintroduction Program, Northern Mountain Range. Site designations Alpha through Echo. Radio collar frequencies logged and cross referenced. Her handwriting covered the margins in neat block letters, observations she had made during the initial briefing that she wanted to verify on site.

The station appeared ahead through the windshield, a cluster of buildings nestled against a granite face that rose sheer and dark. A main cabin with a wraparound porch, two smaller structures that looked like equipment sheds, and a radio tower that rose above the treeline like a skeletal finger. Smoke curled from the main cabin's chimney, which surprised her. The briefing said the station would be unoccupied except for her.

She grabbed her bag and stepped out. The air hit her first, thin and cold, carrying a scent she could not immediately name. Not pine, not earth, not water but something else entirely. Something alive and warm that seemed to cling to the back of her throat. She shook off the sensation and walked toward the main cabin.

The door opened before she reached the porch.

The man who stepped out was not what she expected. He was tall, over six feet easily, with dark hair that fell past his collar and eyes that caught the light in a way that made her think of heated metal. Amber, she noted automatically, cataloging the detail for no reason she could justify. He wore a simple flannel shirt with the sleeves rolled to his elbows, revealing forearms corded with muscle and traced with veins. His jaw was sharp, his cheekbones high, and when he looked at her she felt the weight of his attention like a physical pressure against her skin.

"Dr. Mercer." His voice was low, measured, carrying an authority that seemed to come from somewhere deeper than his throat. "I'm Roman Durst. The project coordinator."

She extended her hand. "Sadie Mercer. Wildlife biology, specialized in canid behavior and pack dynamics."

He took her hand and held it a beat longer than necessary. His palm was rough, calloused, and the heat of his skin seemed to travel up her arm and settle in her chest. She felt her pulse quicken, a flush creeping up her neck that she attributed to the altitude. "I've read your work. The paper on territorial boundary shifts in response to resource scarcity was particularly insightful."

"Thank you." She pulled her hand back and forced herself to focus on the professional context. "I was under the impression the station'd be empty when I arrived."

Roman's mouth curved into something that was almost a smile but not quite. "Plans change. We've had some equipment malfunctions that required on site attention. You'll find the cabin fully equipped. I've taken the smaller bunkhouse to the east."

She nodded and moved past him into the cabin. The interior was warm, lit by kerosene lamps that cast a golden glow across rough hewn walls. A wood stove dominated the main room, and a desk sat near the window with a stack of papers and a laptop. She dropped her bag on the floor and turned to find Roman watching her from the doorway. His gaze traveled down her body with a deliberate slowness that made her skin prickle, then returned to her face with an intensity that made her breath catch.

"The map of the territory is on the desk." He stepped inside and pointed to a marked section near the northern boundary. "The primary pack, designated Alpha group, has been ranging here. Their activity patterns are unusual."

"Unusual how?" She moved to the desk and ran her fingers over the topographic lines, already calculating distances and elevation changes.

"They're more organized than standard wolf behavior would predict." Roman came to stand beside her, close enough that she could feel the heat radiating from his body. The scent of him filled her nose, woodsmoke and pine and something darker underneath, something that made her stomach tighten. "Their hunting patterns, their movement through the territory, the way they respond to intrusion. It's almost military in its precision."

She looked up at him, surprised by the word choice. "Military?"

He held her gaze. "Coordinated. Deliberate. Like they're following a strategy rather than instinct."

She wrote that down in her notebook, the pen scratching across the paper. Her hand was not quite steady. "I'll want to verify that observation personally. The radio collars will give me movement data, but behavioral observation is where the real answers lie."

"Of course." He stepped back, and the absence of his warmth made the air feel suddenly cold. "I'll have Borler bring you the tracking equipment in the morning. For tonight, get settled. The mountain has a way of wearing people down if they don't respect it."

He paused in the doorway, his broad shoulders filling the frame. "And Dr. Mercer, if you need anything during the night, my bunkhouse is just east of here. Don't hesitate."

The way he said it, the low rumble of his voice, made it sound like something other than a professional courtesy. She watched him leave, his footsteps heavy on the porch boards, and told herself the tightness in her chest was nothing more than the altitude.

She spent the evening unpacking and organizing her equipment. The cabin was functional, well stocked with supplies, and the desk faced a window that overlooked a clearing where the trees opened to reveal a stretch of sky. She set up her laptop, checked the radio frequencies, and reviewed the collar data that had been transmitted before her arrival.

The numbers were clean. Fifteen wolves collared, GPS coordinates logging in at regular intervals, heart rate and temperature data streaming without interruption. She pulled up the movement patterns and frowned.

They were too regular. Wolf packs moved in response to prey availability, water sources, territorial pressure. The data on her screen showed a pattern that looked almost choreographed. The Alpha group moved in a circuit that covered the territory with mathematical precision, each leg of the journey timed to the minute.

She pulled out her phone to call her supervisor, then remembered there was no signal this far into the range. The satellite phone sat on the desk, but she hesitated. It was her first night. She did not want to raise concerns about data quality before she had verified it herself.

She closed the laptop and stepped outside.

The night air was cold and sharp, carrying that same strange scent she had noticed on arrival. It was stronger now, thicker, and it seemed to come from the direction of the trees. She walked to the edge of the clearing and stopped, listening.

The forest was not silent. There were rustles, small sounds of nocturnal creatures moving through the underbrush. But beneath it, there was something else. A low vibration, almost too faint to hear, that seemed to resonate in her chest. She pressed her hand to her sternum and felt it, a pulsing hum that matched the rhythm of her heart.

She turned to go back inside and saw him.

Roman stood at the edge of the tree line, fifty yards away, his silhouette dark against the deeper darkness of the forest. He was not looking at her. His head was tilted, his posture relaxed, and he seemed to be listening to the same vibration she had felt.

She watched him for a long moment. The moonlight caught the planes of his face, the sharp angle of his jaw, the breadth of his shoulders. Even from this distance she could see the rise and fall of his chest, slow and controlled. Something about the stillness of him, the way he inhabited his body with such quiet command, made her mouth go dry.

Then he turned, and even in the darkness she could see the amber of his eyes catch the starlight. He did not move toward her. He simply looked at her, and the weight of that look settled into her bones like a brand. She felt it everywhere. A flush spread across her collarbones, down between her breasts, heat pooling low in her belly despite the cold air. Her nipples tightened against the fabric of her bra, and she crossed her arms over her chest, suddenly aware of how alone they were, how far from anyone else.

"Dr. Mercer." His voice carried across the clearing, low and clear. "You should get inside. The temperature drops fast after midnight."

She wanted to ask what he was doing out there, what he was listening to, why his eyes seemed to glow. She wanted to walk toward him, to close the distance between them, to feel that heat radiating from his skin against hers. Instead she nodded and walked back into the cabin, closing the door behind her with hands that trembled slightly.

She leaned against the door and pressed her palms flat to the wood. Her heart hammered. Her skin felt too tight, too sensitive, every nerve ending alive and seeking something she could not name. She breathed in slowly, and the scent of him was still in her nostrils, that dark warm smell that made her think of fur and fire and things without names.

She did not sleep well. The vibration stayed in her chest, a constant low thrum that she could not ignore. She lay in the narrow bed and stared at the ceiling, replaying the moment in the clearing. The weight of his gaze. The heat of his hand on hers. The way her body had responded to him with a certainty that her mind found alarming. She thought about the breadth of his shoulders in the doorway, the muscle of his forearms, the roughness of his palm against her skin. The thought of that roughness elsewhere, on her neck, her waist, the inside of her thigh, made her squeeze her legs together against the ache that bloomed there.

She pressed her face into the pillow and tried to think about wolf migration patterns. It did not help.

The next morning, she woke before dawn and dressed in her field gear. She had work to do. The data anomalies needed verification, and she was not going to find answers lying in bed thinking about things she had no business thinking about.

She stepped outside and found a woman waiting on the porch. She was lean, with short dark hair and watchful hazel eyes, and she held a tracking receiver in her hands.

"Dr. Mercer." The woman's voice was quiet, practical. "I'm Borler Cantwell. Roman sent me to help with the equipment."

Sadie took the receiver and checked the signal. Strong and clear. "Thank you. I'm going to do a preliminary survey of the Alpha group's territory."

Borler nodded. "I'll show you the best route. The terrain can be deceptive."

They walked into the forest together, and Sadie forced herself to focus on the data, on the GPS coordinates, on the scientific method that had guided her entire career. She did not let herself think about Roman's eyes in the darkness, or the vibration that still hummed beneath her skin, or the way her body seemed to know something her mind refused to accept.

But when the first howl rose from the ridge ahead, long and low, resonant in a way that seemed to bypass her ears entirely and go straight to her core, she felt it answer something inside her that she had not known was waiting.

She stopped walking and pressed her hand to her chest.

Borler watched her with those quiet hazel eyes. "You feel it."

It was not a question.

Sadie opened her mouth to deny it, to offer a scientific explanation, to retreat into the safety of data and observation. But the howl came again, and this time she felt it in her teeth, in the marrow of her bones, in the deep primal place that had no name. The sound unspooled something in her, some tension she had carried for years without knowing it, and her body swayed slightly with the force of the release.

"I don't know what I feel," she said.

Borler's expression did not change. "You will."

They continued up the ridge, and Sadie told herself she was still in control. Still the observer. Still the scientist who documented rather than participated. She told herself that the pull she felt toward the sound of that howl was curiosity, nothing more.

She almost believed it.

Night Observation

The tracking equipment hummed in the quiet of the station. Sadie stared at the screen, her coffee growing cold beside her elbow. Data from the past three days showed normal patterns: rest cycles, movement corridors, hunting activity, then rest again. But one signal kept pulling her attention. Roman 7. The alpha male. His movements were too deliberate, too organized to be random wolf behavior.

She pulled up the GPS coordinates. He occupied the same area every night, a small clearing about two miles northwest of the station. The other wolves circled around it but never entered. It made no sense. Wolves didn't maintain designated meeting spots. They didn't post sentries.

Her fingers tapped the keyboard. She could wait until morning and follow standard protocol. But something gnawed at her. The way Roman 7 had looked at her through the binoculars. The way the other wolves had positioned themselves around her, as if she was being watched, protected, contained.

She grabbed her field kit: flashlight, recorder, GPS unit. The night air hit her face as she stepped outside, cool and sharp with the scent of pine. The moon was three-quarters full, casting enough light to navigate without the beam. She kept it off anyway, an old habit from tracking elusive species.

The trail wound through dense undergrowth. Her boots crunched on fallen needles. The signal on her handheld device pulsed steadily, closer now. She moved with practiced silence, pausing every few steps to listen. The forest hummed with small sounds: crickets, an owl, the rustle of something in the brush.

Then she heard it. A low rumble. Not a growl. Something deeper and resonant that vibrated through the ground, up through her boots, into her chest. She stopped. Her heart hammered against her ribs. The sound came from ahead, from the clearing where Roman 7 should be.

She crept forward, keeping low. The trees thinned. Moonlight spilled into a small open space, grass silvered and still. And there he was. Not a wolf. A man. Tall and broad-shouldered, dark hair catching the moonlight. He was naked, his back to her, and he was changing.

Sadie's breath caught. Her scientific mind scrambled for explanation: a trick of the light, a costume, a hallucination. But her eyes refused to lie. The man's spine elongated. His shoulders broadened. Dark fur rippled across his skin, emerging like shadows given form. His hands curled, fingers thickening, nails lengthening into claws. He dropped to all fours, and the transformation completed in a shudder of muscle and bone.

The wolf that stood before her was massive. His coat was dark, almost black, with amber eyes that glowed in the moonlight. He turned and looked directly at her.

She couldn't move. Couldn't breathe. The wolf took a step toward her, then another. His head lowered, and a sound came from his throat. Not a growl. A greeting. Recognition.

Her hand found the recorder at her belt. She pressed the button. "Subject is exhibiting unusual behavior. Possible misidentification." Her voice was barely a whisper.

The wolf stopped. His head tilted. Then he shifted again. Fur receded. Bones realigned. The man stood before her, naked and unashamed, his amber eyes fixed on hers.

"You shouldn't be here, Sadie." His voice was low and rough, like gravel wrapped in silk.

She stumbled back. "You can talk. You're..."

"Roman Durst." He took a step forward. "Alpha of the Emberhowl Pack. And your mate."

"Mate?" The word came out sharp. "I'm a biologist. I'm here to study wolves. Real wolves."

"We are real wolves." He moved closer. She could see the muscles shifting under his skin, the power coiled in his frame. "We've been waiting for you. The pack has been waiting."

"This is impossible." She shook her head. "Shifters don't exist. It's folklore. Myth."

"Yet you saw me change." He was close now. She could smell him: earth, pine, something wild and warm. "You felt the pull the moment you arrived. Don't lie to yourself."

She wanted to argue, to deny. But her body was betraying her. Her pulse raced. Her skin tingled. Every instinct screamed at her to run, but another part of her wanted to step closer. To touch.

"What do you want from me?" Her voice cracked.

"Everything." He reached out. His fingers brushed her jaw, gentle but firm. "Your mind. Your body. Your soul. The pack needs you. I need you."

"I didn't sign up for this."

"You signed up for the wolves. You got the truth." His thumb traced her lower lip. "I'll give you time. But not tonight. Tonight, I claim you."

She should have run. Should have screamed. But her feet were rooted. Her breath came in shallow gasps. "Claim me?"

"The bite." He leaned in. His lips brushed her ear. "It bonds us. Marks you as mine. The pack will know."

"I don't..."

"You do." His hand slid to the back of her neck. "Your body knows. It's been waiting, just like mine."

She felt it then. A warmth pooling low in her belly. An ache between her thighs. Her nipples tightened under her shirt. She was aroused, terrified, curious all at once.

"I can't..."

"You can." His voice was a command. "And you will."

He turned her gently, his hands on her shoulders. Her back pressed against his chest. She could feel his heartbeat, strong and steady. His breath was warm on her neck.

"This will hurt," he said. "But the pleasure will outweigh it."

His lips traced the curve of her neck, slow and deliberate. She shivered at the contact, her skin prickling with sensation. One hand slid from her shoulder down her arm, calloused fingers leaving trails of heat. The other hand gathered her hair, pushing it aside to expose the junction of her neck and shoulder. His mouth followed, pressing open-mouthed kisses along the sensitive column of her throat.

"You're trembling," he murmured against her skin.

"I'm terrified."

"Good." His teeth grazed her pulse point. "Fear makes the blood sing."

His hand slipped beneath the hem of her shirt, palm flat against her stomach. The heat of his touch burned through her. Her back arched instinctively, pressing closer to him. She could feel him now, hard and insistent against her lower back. The evidence of his desire sent a fresh wave of wetness between her thighs.

"Your body knows what it wants," he whispered. His hand slid higher, fingers tracing the edge of her ribs. "Even if your mind hasn't caught up."

His thumb brushed the underside of her breast. She gasped, her head falling back against his shoulder. He cupped her through her bra, squeezing gently. The rough pad of his thumb found her nipple even through the fabric, circling until it peaked. She made a sound she didn't recognize, something desperate and needy.

"That's it," he said. "Let yourself feel it."

His other hand slid down to her hip, fingers hooking into the waistband of her pants. He pulled her back against him, grinding his hardness against her. She whimpered at the pressure, at the way it sent sparks of pleasure racing up her spine.

"I'm going to claim you now, Sadie." His voice was rough, barely controlled. "And you're going to let me."

He spun her around to face him. His mouth crashed down on hers, hungry and demanding. She tasted him: wildness and pine and something primal. Her hands found his chest, fingers splaying over the hard planes of muscle. His skin was fever-hot beneath her palms.

He kissed her like he was staking a claim, his tongue sweeping into her mouth. She kissed him back, her fingers curling into the dark hair on his chest. He groaned into her mouth, the sound vibrating through her.

His hands worked at her shirt, pulling it over her head. The cool night air hit her skin, but his body was a furnace against her. He unhooked her bra with a practiced flick and tossed it aside. His gaze dropped to her breasts, heavy and aching in the moonlight.

"Beautiful," he breathed. He bent his head, tongue circling one nipple before sucking it into his mouth.

She cried out, fingers tangling in his hair. He sucked harder, teeth grazing the sensitive peak. His other hand found her neglected breast, rolling and pinching the nipple until she was writhing against him.

He switched, mouth lavishing attention on the other breast. His hand slid down her stomach, fingers working at the button of her pants. She helped him, pushing them down along with her underwear. The forest floor was cool beneath her bare feet.

He knelt before her. She could see him fully now, his cock jutting thick and hard from a nest of dark curls. He was large. Intimidatingly so. The thought of him inside her sent a mix of fear and desperate want through her.

He lifted one of her legs over his shoulder. She grabbed his hair for balance. He looked up at her, amber eyes burning, and then his mouth was on her.

His tongue parted her folds, licking a long stripe up her center. She sobbed at the sensation. He found her clit, circling it with the tip of his tongue before sucking gently. Her hips bucked against his face. He held her steady, hands gripping her thighs, and devoured her like a man starving.

He slipped a finger inside her, then two, curling them to find the spot that made her see stars. She was clenching around him, close already. Too close. The pleasure built like a storm, pressure mounting with every stroke of his tongue.

"Roman," she gasped. "I'm going to..."

"Not yet." He pulled back, leaving her trembling on the edge. He stood, lifting her easily. She wrapped her legs around his waist. He walked her backward until her shoulders met a tree trunk. The bark was rough against her bare skin.

"I need to be inside you when I bite you," he said. "The bond needs to be complete."

She felt the head of his cock notch against her entrance. He paused, eyes searching hers. "Tell me you want this."

"I want this." The words came out breathless, desperate.

He pushed inside her in one long, deep thrust. She cried out at the stretch, at the fullness. He was big, almost too much, but her body adjusted, slick and willing. He groaned, forehead pressing against hers.

"You feel like you were made for me," he said. "Tight and wet and perfect."

He started to move, slow at first, letting her feel every inch of him. Each thrust dragged against her inner walls, sending waves of pleasure cascading through her. She dug her nails into his shoulders, urging him faster.

He obliged, picking up the pace. The sound of their bodies meeting filled the clearing, slick and primal. He thrust harder, deeper, claiming her with every stroke. She met him thrust for thrust, hips rolling to take him as deep as possible.

"Mine," he growled. "Say it."

"Yours." She was past caring about logic or science. There was only this, only him, only the pleasure building inside her like a tidal wave.

He reached between them, fingers finding her clit. He rubbed in tight circles as he thrust, and she shattered. The orgasm crashed through her, white-hot and overwhelming. She screamed his name, clenching around him.

He followed her over the edge, thrusting deep one final time. She felt him spill inside her, hot and thick. His arms tightened around her, crushing her to his chest. He was still buried inside her when his mouth found her neck.

His teeth grazed her skin. She gasped. Then he bit down.

Pain exploded through her, sharp and bright. She cried out. But beneath the pain was something else. Heat. Energy. A current that surged through her veins, lighting up every nerve. Her knees buckled. He held her up, his mouth still pressed to the wound, his tongue laving the blood.

The world tilted. Colors bled together. She could feel him, not just his body against hers but his mind, his emotions. A flood of protectiveness, hunger, love. It was overwhelming. She couldn't breathe. Couldn't think.

He pulled back. His hand came up to her neck, pressing against the bite. "Mine," he whispered.

She turned in his arms. Her hands found his chest. His skin was hot. Her fingers traced the contours of his muscles. She looked up at him. His eyes were glowing. Not amber anymore. Gold.

"What did you do to me?"

"Started the change." He cupped her face. "It will take time. Weeks. But you'll become one of us."

"I don't want to change."

"You don't have a choice now." He kissed her forehead. "The bond is set. The pack will sense it. They'll protect you. Guide you."

She touched her neck. The wound was already closing, the pain fading into a dull throb. Her fingers came away wet with blood. "I'm a scientist."

"You still are. But now you're also pack." He took her hand. "Come. I'll walk you back."

She didn't argue. She let him lead her through the woods. Her mind was reeling. Everything she believed was shattered. But beneath the fear and confusion was a thread of certainty. She was meant to be here. Meant to be his.

At the edge of the clearing, he stopped. "Tomorrow night. Full moon. The rites begin."

"I don't know..."

"You'll know." He squeezed her hand. "Your body will tell you what to do."

He turned and disappeared into the trees. She stood alone, her neck throbbing, her heart racing. The station lights glowed in the distance. She walked back on autopilot, her feet moving without thought.

Inside, she locked the door and leaned against it. Her reflection stared back from the window: a woman she didn't recognize. Auburn hair tangled, eyes wide, a fresh bite mark on her neck.

She touched it again. The skin was warm and tender. And somewhere deep inside, a new instinct stirred. Hunger. Not for food. For him. For the pack. For the change.

Her recorder was still in her hand. She raised it to her lips. "Subject: Roman Durst. Alpha. Species: Homo sapiens lupus. Confirmed shifter." She paused. "Bite received. Bond initiated. Personal status: compromised."

She set the recorder down. Her hands were shaking. She sat at the desk, staring at the tracking equipment. The signals blinked. Normal. But nothing was normal anymore.

The night stretched on. She didn't sleep. Couldn't. Every sound made her jump. Every shadow made her heart race. She was waiting. For what, she didn't know. For the change. For the moon. For him.

When dawn finally broke, she was still sitting there, her hand pressed to her neck, her mind a storm of questions. She was a scientist. She dealt in facts. But the fact was, she was no longer just Sadie Mercer. She was Roman Durst's mate. And the pack was waiting.

Station Isolation

The storm hit before dawn. Sadie woke to the sound of wind screaming through the canyon, rattling the station's reinforced windows in their frames. She pulled on her field clothes and stumbled into the main room, where Roman stood at the radio, his broad back to her.

"Satellite link's dead," he said without turning. "Radio can only reach the valley station. They won't send anyone up in this."

"How long?" she asked.

"Three days. Maybe four." He turned, and his amber eyes found hers. "You're stuck with us."

Her heart hammered. The station had two bedrooms, a common area, and a small kitchen. She had taken the room at the end of the hall. Roman had the one across from hers. And now Borler and Galic were stranded too, having come up the night before to deliver supplies.

"I need to check my equipment," she said, her voice steadier than she felt.

"GPS trackers are fine. They're designed for worse than this." Roman stepped closer. "But you should eat. We've got enough supplies for a week."

She nodded, not trusting her voice. The memory of the night before burned in her mind. His teeth at her throat. The strange heat that had flooded her body. The way she had pressed into him instead of pulling away.

Borler emerged from the kitchen, a mug of coffee in each hand. She offered one to Sadie without a word. Their fingers brushed, and Sadie felt a jolt of warmth that had nothing to do with the steam rising from the cup.

"Thanks," she managed.

Borler's hazel eyes held hers for a moment longer than necessary. "Storm's going to get worse before it gets better. You should stay inside."

"I wasn't planning on going anywhere."

Galic appeared behind Borler, his broad frame filling the doorway. He grunted something that might have been a greeting and moved to the window, staring out at the gray wall of clouds and snow.

The morning passed in a strange, suspended silence. Sadie sat at the small table with her laptop, reviewing the tracking data from the past week. But she couldn't focus. Every few minutes, her eyes drifted to Roman, who had settled into a chair near the fireplace with a book he wasn't reading.

He caught her looking and smiled. It was a slow, knowing smile that made her stomach flip.

"You're staring," he said.

"I'm observing." She turned back to her screen, her face hot. "It's what I do."

"Is that what you call it?"

She didn't answer. The storm howled outside, and the fire crackled, and the four of them existed in a bubble of forced intimacy that felt both impossible and inevitable.

By afternoon, the tension had become unbearable. Sadie stood and stretched, her muscles tight from sitting too long. "I'm going to check the weather station," she announced. "Just the roof access."

Roman was on his feet before she finished speaking. "I'll go with you."

"I don't need a babysitter."

"I know you don't." He grabbed his coat from the hook by the door. "But the roof access is icy. And I'd rather not have to explain to your university why their researcher broke her neck."

She wanted to argue, but he was already holding the door for her. She grabbed her own coat and followed him into the stairwell.

The wind hit them like a physical force when they stepped onto the roof. Sadie gasped, the cold stealing her breath. She pressed forward, checking the instruments, noting the wind speed and barometric pressure. Roman stood behind her, a solid wall of warmth at her back.

"Pressure's dropping fast," she shouted over the wind.

"I know."

She turned to face him, and suddenly he was too close. His body blocked the wind, creating a pocket of stillness around them. Snow dusted his dark hair and settled on his shoulders.

"Roman." His name came out breathless. "What are you doing?"

"Keeping you warm."

His hand came up to her cheek, his fingers cold against her flushed skin. She should have pulled away. She should have reminded him of professional boundaries, of the contract she had signed, of the fact that she was a scientist and he was her subject.

But she didn't.

Instead, she leaned into his touch, her eyes fluttering closed. The scent of him filled her lungs. Pine and smoke and something darker, something that made her bones ache with want.

"You feel it too," he said. It wasn't a question.

"I don't know what I feel."

"Yes, you do." His thumb traced the line of her jaw, tilting her chin up. "You feel the bond. The pull. Your body knows what your mind is still fighting."

"My body's confused," she whispered. "It's been a strange week."

"It's been a strange life." He lowered his head, his lips brushing her ear. "But it's about to become very simple."

His hand slid from her cheek to the back of her neck, fingers threading through her hair. The touch was possessive, claiming. And her body responded before her mind could catch up. She arched into him, a soft sound escaping her throat.

"Roman, we're on a roof in the middle of a storm."

"And?"

"And someone could see us."

"No one can see us." His other hand found her hip, pulling her against him. "The storm has given us privacy. And I intend to use it."

He kissed her then. Not like the night before, when the bite had been shock and revelation. This was slower, deeper, a deliberate exploration. His tongue swept into her mouth, and she tasted the wildness of him, the raw power that he held in check.

Her hands came up to his chest, pushing against the solid muscle. But she wasn't pushing him away. She was steadying herself, anchoring herself to him as the world tilted.

He broke the kiss and pressed his forehead to hers. "I'm going to mark you again," he said. "Not the claiming bite. Something gentler. Something that will help your body adjust."

"Adjust to what?"

"To me. To the pack. To what you're becoming."

She should have asked questions. She should have demanded explanations. But the storm was howling, and his body was warm against hers, and the bond between them hummed with a frequency she was beginning to recognize.

"Okay," she said.

He pulled her collar aside, exposing her neck to the cold wind. She shivered, but his mouth was hot against her skin. He didn't bite. He laved the spot where he had marked her the night before, his tongue tracing the healing wound.

A moan escaped her. Her knees buckled, and his arm tightened around her waist, holding her up.

"That's it," he murmured against her throat. "Let your body learn."

He scraped his teeth lightly over the mark, and pleasure shot through her like lightning. She cried out, her fingers digging into his shoulders. The scent of him intensified, wrapping around her, drowning her.

"Roman, please."

"Please what?"

She didn't know. She didn't have words. All she had was the ache between her legs and the desperate need for more of him.

He pulled back, his eyes dark and hungry. "Not yet. Not here." He kissed her forehead, a gesture so tender it made her chest hurt. "But soon."

They went back inside. Borler and Galic were in the common room, and Sadie felt their eyes on her as she crossed to her room. Her face was flushed, her lips swollen, and she knew they could smell Roman on her.

She closed the door and leaned against it, her heart racing. The storm raged outside, but inside, something else was building. Something she couldn't control.

That night, they ate dinner together. Canned soup and bread, eaten around the small table. The conversation was stilted, full of silences that stretched too long. Sadie felt hyperaware of every movement Roman made, every glance he sent her way.

After dinner, she retreated to her room. But sleep wouldn't come. She lay in the dark, listening to the wind and the creak of the old building. And then she heard it. A soft knock at her door.

She knew who it was before she opened it.

Roman stood in the hallway, his shirt half untucked, his hair disheveled. He looked at her with an intensity that made her breath catch.

"Couldn't sleep," he said.

"Neither could I."

He stepped forward, and she stepped back, letting him into her room. The space felt impossibly small with him in it. He filled it, his presence overwhelming.

"I need to be close to you," he said. "The storm. The isolation. It's making the bond stronger."

"Is that bad?"

"No." He sat on the edge of her bed. "It's necessary. But it means I won't be able to stay away from you. Not tonight."

She stood in front of him, her hands clasped together. "What do you want me to do?"

"Come here."

She walked to him, and he pulled her down onto his lap. She straddled him, her knees on either side of his hips. His hands found her waist, and he looked up at her with something like wonder.

"You're so beautiful," he said. "Even when you're fighting this."

"I'm not fighting."

"Yes, you are." He smiled, but it was sad. "You're fighting yourself. Fighting what you feel. But you don't have to. Not with me."

She leaned down and kissed him. It was softer this time, exploratory. His hands slid up her back, pulling her closer. She felt the heat of him through their clothes, the hard length of him pressing against her thigh.

He rolled them, laying her back on the bed. His body covered hers, a warm weight that made her feel safe and trapped at the same time.

"I'm going to mark you again," he said. "Everywhere. So the pack knows you're mine."

"Is that why you're doing this? For the pack?"

"No." He kissed her collarbone. "I'm doing this because I can't stop myself. Because every moment I'm not touching you feels like a wound."

His mouth traveled down her throat, across her chest, pausing at the top of her shirt. He looked up at her, a question in his eyes.

"Yes," she whispered.

He unbuttoned her shirt slowly, reverently. Each button revealed more of her skin to the cool air. He pushed the fabric aside and bent to press his lips to the swell of her breast.

She gasped, her back arching. His tongue traced a path across her skin, leaving a trail of heat. He found her nipple and drew it into his mouth, and she cried out, her hands fisting in his hair.

"That's it," he murmured against her skin. "Let me hear you."

He moved to the other breast, giving it the same attention. She was shaking, the pleasure building in waves. His hand slid down her stomach, under the waistband of her pants.

"Roman, I..."

"Shh." His fingers found her, wet and ready. "I know. I can feel how much you want this."

He touched her with a gentleness that surprised her. His fingers circled her clit, slow and deliberate, building the tension until she was gasping for breath. Every stroke sent sparks through her, each one sharper than the last. Her hips rolled against his hand, seeking more pressure, more friction, more of him.

"You're so wet for me," he breathed against her throat. "So ready."

"Please," she begged.

"Please what?"

"Please, I need..."

He pushed a finger inside her, and she moaned, her hips rocking against his hand. He added a second finger, stretching her, filling her. Her inner walls clenched around him, drawing him deeper. He curled his fingers, finding the spot that made her vision blur.

"God, Roman..."

"I've got you." His thumb pressed against her clit, circling in a slow rhythm that matched the thrust of his fingers. "Let go for me. I want to feel you come apart."

The pressure built, coiling tight in her belly. She could feel it gathering, rising, threatening to consume her. His mouth found her breast again, his teeth grazing her nipple, and the combination of sensations pushed her over the edge.

"Come for me," he commanded.

And she did. Her body shuddered around his fingers, waves of pleasure crashing through her. She cried out his name, her nails raking down his back. He held her through it, his mouth on her throat, whispering words she couldn't quite hear. The aftershocks rippled through her for what felt like an eternity, each one a smaller echo of the first.

When she came back to herself, she was trembling. He pulled his hand away and brought his fingers to his lips, tasting her. His eyes never left hers as he licked them clean, and the sight of it sent another pulse of heat through her.

"You taste like something I've been starving for," he said. "Like something I didn't know I needed until I had it."

She reached for him, her fingers finding the hem of his shirt. "Your turn."

He let her pull the shirt over his head, revealing the hard planes of his chest. She ran her hands over his skin, feeling the muscle beneath, the heat of him. He was beautiful in the dim light, all sharp angles and raw power held barely in check.

"You don't have to," he said, his voice rough.

"I want to."

She pushed him back against the mattress and kissed her way down his chest. Her tongue traced the lines of his tattoos, following the ink across his skin. She could feel his heartbeat quicken beneath her lips, and the knowledge that she affected him sent a thrill through her.

When she reached the waistband of his pants, she paused. He was hard, straining against the fabric. She looked up at him, and his eyes were dark, hungry, waiting.

She unbuttoned his jeans and pulled them down his hips. His cock sprang free, thick and heavy. She wrapped her hand around him, stroking slowly, experimentally. A groan escaped his throat, and his hips jerked against her grip.

"Sadie." Her name was a warning and a plea.

She leaned down and took him into her mouth. The taste of him was salt and musk, intoxicating. She swirled her tongue around the head, then took him deeper, feeling him hit the back of her throat. His hand found her hair, tangling in it, guiding her.

"Fuck," he breathed. "That's... you feel so good."

She set a rhythm, her mouth moving up and down his length while her hand worked the base. She could feel him tensing beneath her, his breathing ragged. His grip on her hair tightened, and she knew he was close.

"Stop," he said, his voice strained. "I want to be inside you when I come."

She released him and crawled back up his body. He rolled them again, positioning himself between her legs. She could feel the head of his cock pressing against her entrance, and she arched her hips, seeking him.

"Tell me you want this," he said. "Tell me you're mine."

"I'm yours." The words came out without hesitation. "I want this. I want you."

He pushed into her slowly, inch by inch, stretching her, filling her. She gasped at the sensation, at the fullness of him. He paused when he was fully seated inside her, giving her time to adjust.

"You feel incredible," he said through gritted teeth. "So tight. So perfect."

"Move," she pleaded. "Please, Roman, I need you to move."

He pulled back and thrust into her, setting a deep, steady rhythm. Each stroke hit the spot inside her that made stars explode behind her eyes. She wrapped her legs around his waist, pulling him deeper, needing more.

His mouth found her throat again, his teeth grazing the mark he had left. The pleasure from that spot combined with the feeling of him moving inside her, building into something overwhelming.

"I'm going to mark you again," he said against her skin. "Right here. Right where they'll all see it."

"Yes," she gasped. "Please."

His thrusts quickened, becoming harder, more urgent. She could feel her second orgasm building, coiling tighter with each movement. He reached between them, his fingers finding her clit, and that was all it took.

She came with a cry, her body clenching around him. He followed a moment later, his own release tearing through him. He buried himself deep inside her and bit down gently on her neck, not hard enough to break the skin, but enough to send another wave of pleasure crashing through her.

They lay tangled together, their breathing slowly returning to normal. He was still inside her, and neither of them made any move to change that. The storm raged outside, but in here, there was only warmth and the steady beat of his heart against her chest.

"You're mine," he said. "And I'm going to spend the rest of this storm making sure you know it."

He withdrew from her and lay beside her, pulling her against his chest. His arms wrapped around her, and she felt the steady beat of his heart against her back.

"Sleep," he said. "I'll be here when you wake."

She wanted to argue. She wanted to ask questions. But her body was heavy and warm, and the storm outside had become a distant lullaby.

She slept.

In the morning, she woke alone. But the sheets smelled like him. And when she touched her neck, she felt the tenderness of a new mark.

The storm was still raging. And she was still trapped. But somehow, that didn't feel like a threat anymore.

It felt like an invitation.

Private Claiming

The storm had passed, but the world felt hushed and expectant as Roman led me away from the station. My boots crunched on wet gravel, each step a small rebellion that my body ignored. I should have been afraid. I was afraid. But beneath the fear, a current of dark anticipation pulled me forward.

His hand was warm on the small of my back, guiding me toward a rocky outcropping I had mapped on my first day. I had noted it as a possible den site. I never imagined I would be entering it as prey.

"Where are you taking me?" I asked, my voice steadier than I felt.

"Somewhere private," he said. "Somewhere safe."

The entrance to the den was low, hidden behind a curtain of moss and stone. I had to crouch to enter. Inside, the air was warm and thick with the scent of earth and fur and him. A single oil lamp cast a dim glow over a space lined with pelts. It was a wolf's chamber, a place of primal comfort.

I turned to face him, my heart hammering against my ribs. "This is where you bring your mates?"

His eyes were molten amber in the low light. "I've never brought anyone here. You're the first."

The words hit me like a physical blow. I wanted to believe they were a tactic, a line designed to disarm me. But the truth in his voice was undeniable. This was sacred to him.

"I can't do this," I said, backing away until my shoulders hit the cool stone wall. "I'm a scientist. I have a life. A career. This isn't me."

He stepped closer, his body blocking my view of the entrance. "You felt the bond the night I bit you. You felt the scent I left on your skin. Your body knows what it wants, even if your mind refuses to accept it."

I shook my head, but my skin was already tingling, already craving his touch. The changes were starting. I could feel them in my bones, a deep ache that promised more. "This is insane. I'm not a wolf. I'm not your mate."

"You are," he said simply. "And I'll show you."

His hands found my shoulders, thumbs tracing my collarbone. The touch sent a shiver through me, and I hated how my body leaned into it. He undressed me slowly, each garment peeled away like a layer of my resistance. My field jacket first, then the flannel beneath, his fingers working each button with deliberate patience. When he reached the thermal underneath, he paused, pressing his palm flat against my sternum. The heat of his hand seared through the thin fabric, and I felt my nipples tighten in response.

"Your heartbeat's racing," he murmured.

"I'm terrified."

"I know." His mouth curved, not quite a smile. "But terror and desire smell almost the same."

He pulled the thermal over my head, and the cool air kissed my bare breasts. I stood shivering in the warm den, my skin flushed and my breath coming in short gasps. His gaze dropped to my chest, and something in his expression shifted. Hungrier. More wolf than man.

He shrugged off his own clothes, and I watched the play of muscle and shadow over his body. He was built for power, for control. Broad shoulders tapering to a narrow waist, dark hair dusting his chest and trailing down his stomach. And between his legs, his cock hung heavy and thick, already half hard. All that power was focused on me.

"Lie down," he said, his voice a low command that vibrated through me.

I should have refused. I should have walked out. But my legs were weak, and my will was crumbling. I sank onto the pelts, the soft fur tickling my bare skin. He followed me down, his body covering mine, his weight a promise I was terrified to keep.

His mouth found my neck first, tongue tracing the scar where he had bitten me days ago. The spot was hypersensitive, and I gasped as pleasure lanced through me, sharp and electric. He murmured against my skin, words of possession and comfort.

"You're mine, Sadie. Let me show you what that means."

His lips traveled lower, pressing open-mouthed kisses along my collarbone, then down to my breast. When his mouth closed over my nipple, I arched off the pelts with a strangled cry. His tongue circled the peak, then flicked, then sucked, drawing it deep. The sensation shot straight between my legs, and I felt myself grow wet, slick heat pooling where his thigh pressed against me.

He groaned against my breast, the sound vibrating through my chest. "You taste like rain and want. I've been starving for this."

His hand slid down my ribs, over my hip, and between my thighs. His fingers found my entrance, and he pushed one inside, slow and deliberate. I was soaked, and the sound of it was obscene in the quiet den. He added a second finger, stretching me, curling them until he found the spot that made my vision blur.

"Roman," I gasped, my hands gripping his shoulders. "Please."

"Please what?" He pulled back, his amber eyes holding mine. "Tell me what you need."

I couldn't answer. I didn't have the words. But my hips rocked against his hand, chasing the pleasure, and he smiled. A predator's smile. He knew.

He withdrew his fingers, and I whimpered at the loss. But then he was shifting, positioning himself between my legs, and I felt the head of his cock press against my entrance. He was thick, heavy, and the anticipation was a living thing inside me. He pushed forward slowly, giving my body time to adjust, and I felt myself stretch around him inch by inch.

A whimper escaped my lips. It was too much. It wasn't enough.

"Breathe," he said, his forehead touching mine. "Let me in."

I tried to follow his instruction, but my lungs had forgotten how to work. He pushed deeper, and I felt the base of him swell against my entrance. The knot. It was beginning to form.

"Roman," I gasped, my hands gripping his shoulders. "I can't."

"You can," he said, his voice strained with control. "You were made for this. For me."

He thrust forward, seating himself fully inside me, and the knot locked us together. I cried out, a sound that was half pain, half wonder. I was trapped. Bound to him. The sensation was overwhelming, a fullness that pressed against every nerve ending, that reached deep inside me and claimed me from within.

He held still, letting me adjust to the impossible fullness. I could feel him pulsing inside me, the knot swelling further, pressing against the sensitive spot his fingers had found. Each pulse sent a jolt through me, and I writhed beneath him, desperate for friction that the knot prevented.

"I need to move," I whimpered.

"I know." His jaw was clenched, the tendons in his neck taut. The control was costing him. "When you're ready."

I rolled my hips, a small movement that sent shockwaves through us both. He hissed, his fingers digging into the pelts beside my head. I did it again, finding a rhythm, and he began to move with me. Short, deep thrusts that rocked my body against the pelts. The knot held us in a rhythm that was primal and ancient, each movement grinding against that spot until I was shaking.

I felt his breath on my neck, his heartbeat against my chest, his scent filling my lungs. I was drowning in him. Every sense overwhelmed by him. The wet slide of our bodies. The musk of fur and arousal. The heat of him inside me, around me, everywhere.

My internal conflict raged. This was wrong. I was being taken, consumed. But my body had no such qualms. It arched into him, pulsed around him, begged for more. The pleasure was a dark tide, rising and rising, threatening to pull me under.

"Let go," he commanded, his voice a growl. "Let yourself feel it."

His hand found my clit, and that was the end. I shattered against him, my body convulsing in waves of pleasure that felt like they were tearing me apart. I screamed, my nails digging into his back, my teeth finding his shoulder. I bit down, tasting his blood, and the bond flared white hot between us. His hips stuttered, and I felt him spill into me, the knot pulsing with each release. Hot and thick and endless, filling me until I could feel it leaking around the seal of our joining.

We lay tangled together, breathing harsh and ragged, the world reduced to this single point of connection. The knot held us locked, and each small shift sent aftershocks through my body. I clenched around him involuntarily, and he groaned against my neck.

"You'll kill me," he muttered.

"You started this," I whispered back.

His laugh was low and breathless. "No. You did. The moment you stepped into my territory."

But the changes were already beginning.

I felt a strange heat in my bones, a tingling under my skin. My fingers twitched, and I looked down, expecting to see claws. They were still human, but I could feel them, the potential of them, waiting just beneath the surface.

"What's happening to me?" I whispered, my voice hoarse.

He stroked my hair, his touch gentle now. "The shift is beginning. Your body's learning to become what it was always meant to be."

I shook my head, tears pricking at my eyes. "I don't want this. I didn't choose this."

"You will," he said, his voice full of a certainty that terrified me. "In time, you will."

We lay in the den as the knot deflated, as my body slowly released him. I felt empty without him inside me, a loss that was physical and immediate. He pulled me against his chest, and I let him. I was too tired to fight.

My mind was a battlefield. The scientist in me screamed that this was Stockholm syndrome, a biological manipulation, a trap. But another voice, new and hungry, whispered that this was home. This was where I belonged.

I closed my eyes, and for the first time in days, I slept without dreaming.

When I woke, the lamp had burned low, and Roman was watching me. His eyes were soft now, the amber faded to a warm brown.

"How do you feel?" he asked.

I took stock of myself. My body ached in unfamiliar places. My skin felt sensitive, alive. And deep in my chest, a new rhythm pulsed, a second heartbeat that matched his.

"I feel different," I said, my voice small.

"You are different," he said. "The bond's forming. Your body's changing. By the next full moon, you'll be able to shift."

The words hit me like a physical blow. I would become a wolf. The thing I had studied, cataloged, and observed. I would become the subject of my own research.

"I can't go back, can't I?" I asked, the question hanging in the air.

He didn't answer. He didn't need to. We both knew the truth.

The station was still there. My equipment was still waiting. But I was no longer the woman who had arrived three days ago. I was something new. Something claimed.

And as Roman pulled me close, his lips brushing my forehead, I felt the last of my resistance crumble. Not into surrender, but into something more complex. An acceptance. A beginning.

I was his. And I was becoming theirs.

The scientist in me was dying. The wolf was waking up. And I was terrified of what I would become.

But part of me, the part that had felt that first bite, that had craved his scent, that had shattered on his knot, that part was already running toward the change.

I closed my eyes and let the darkness take me, the bond humming in my chest like a promise I couldn't escape.

And for the first time, I didn't want to.

Rite Introduction

The pack territory sprawled before her, a valley cradled between mountain peaks that caught the afternoon light. Sadie stood at the edge of the settlement, her body still humming with the changes that had begun in the den. Every scent was sharper here. Every sound carried meaning she couldn't quite decode.

Roman's hand rested on her lower back, a steady pressure that felt more natural with each passing hour. She hated how quickly she'd grown accustomed to his touch.

"This is where we live," he said. "Not just the wolves you've been tracking. All of us."

Houses dotted the valley floor, rustic structures that blended into the landscape. Smoke rose from chimneys. Children ran between buildings. It looked like any remote mountain community, except for the way the air shimmered at the borders, like heat rising off summer pavement.

"Barriers," Roman said, following her gaze. "Keeps humans out. Keeps us hidden."

She should have been taking notes. Recording observations. Her field journal sat untouched in her pack, and she couldn't bring herself to care.

Borler appeared at her elbow, silent as always. "The women are ready for you."

"Ready for what?" Sadie asked, but Borler was already walking away.

Roman guided her forward, his palm sliding from her back to her waist. "The full moon is in three days. There are preparations."

"I don't understand what you expect from me."

"I expect you to participate." His voice dropped lower. "You're already changing, Sadie. You can feel it."

She could. The heightened senses. The way her body responded to his presence. The hunger that had nothing to do with food.

A group of women approached, their movements fluid and graceful. They wore simple dresses of soft fabric, and their eyes held a knowing warmth that made Sadie's skin prickle.

"This is Mara," Roman said, indicating a woman with silver-streaked hair. "She'll guide you through the rites."

Mara smiled, and something in that expression told Sadie she was in for more than a simple tour.

The women surrounded her, their hands gentle but insistent as they led her away from Roman. She looked back, but he only nodded, his amber eyes tracking her with possessive satisfaction.

They brought her to a building at the center of the valley. Inside, the air was thick with herbs and smoke. Furs covered the floors. Candles flickered on every surface.

"Undress," Mara said. Not a request.

Sadie hesitated, her scientist's mind screaming for protocols and documentation. But her body remembered the den. Remembered Roman's knot. Remembered the way instinct had overridden logic.

She undressed.

The women moved around her, their hands slick with oils that smelled of pine and musk. They touched her everywhere, working the scents into her skin. Sadie's breath came faster as they massaged her shoulders, her arms, her thighs. This was clinical. This was preparation. But her body didn't know the difference.

"You're doing well," Mara murmured. "The alpha chose well."

"Is this... is this what happens to all mates?"

"Every one. The oils help you shift. Help you carry the pack's scent." Mara's hands pressed into Sadie's lower back, finding muscles she hadn't known were tense. "By the full moon, you'll be ready."

Ready for what? The question died on her lips as another woman knelt before her, applying oil to her inner thighs. Sadie's knees buckled slightly, and hands caught her, steadying her.

"The body remembers what the mind resists," Mara said. "Let it."

Sadie closed her eyes and tried to stop thinking.

Hours passed, or maybe minutes. The women worked in silence, their touches growing more intimate as they prepared her. They painted symbols on her skin with clay and ash. They braided herbs into her hair. They dressed her in a robe of soft leather that left her shoulders bare and her legs exposed to mid-thigh.

When they finally led her out, the sun had set. Torches lit the path to a clearing where the pack had gathered.

Roman waited at the center, shirtless, his chest painted with the same symbols that marked her skin. The firelight caught the muscles of his shoulders, the planes of his face. He looked like something from a dream.

"Come," he said, and her feet moved before her mind could object.

The pack parted as she walked, their eyes tracking her progress. She felt exposed, marked, claimed. The robe whispered against her oiled skin, and every breath carried the scent of the pack, of Roman, of the night.

He took her hand when she reached him, his fingers intertwining with hers. "Do you trust me?"

"No," she said, but her voice wavered.

"That's honest." He turned to face the pack, pulling her against his side. "Tonight, we show her the rites. Tomorrow, she prepares. On the full moon, she joins us."

The pack howled, a sound that shook the ground and vibrated through Sadie's bones. She felt it in her chest, in her throat, in the base of her spine.

Roman led her through the clearing, showing her the circle where the rites would take place. The earth was packed smooth, stained dark with generations of use. At the center stood a stone, waist-high, worn smooth by countless hands.

"The claiming stone," Roman said. "Every mate is presented here."

She couldn't look away from it. Couldn't stop imagining herself bent over it, Roman behind her, the pack watching.

"It doesn't have to be tonight," he said, his voice soft. "But it will happen."

"I know." The words came out before she could stop them.

His hand tightened on hers. "The pack needs to see you accept. To see you want it."

"I don't even know what I want anymore."

"That's not true." He turned her to face him, his amber eyes burning. "Your body knows. Your wolf knows. You're just too stubborn to admit it."

She wanted to argue, but the truth pressed against her chest like a second heartbeat. She did know. She wanted his knot. She wanted the pack's scent on her skin. She wanted to belong.

"I can't go back, can I?"

"No." He cupped her face, his thumb tracing her jaw. "But you can choose to stay."

The pack circled them, their bodies warm in the night air. Hands reached out, touching her shoulders, her hair, her arms. Not threatening. Welcoming.

Borler appeared at her side, holding a cup of dark liquid. "Drink."

"What is it?"

"Helps you see."

Sadie took the cup and drank. The liquid was bitter, herbal, and it burned going down. Heat spread through her chest, down into her stomach, lower.

The world shifted. Colors brightened. Sounds deepened. She could feel the pack's emotions pressing against her consciousness, a tide of belonging and anticipation.

Roman took the empty cup from her hands and pulled her against him. His body was hard and hot, and she could feel his arousal pressing against her hip.

"This is what you'll feel on the full moon," he said against her ear. "Every sense heightened. Every instinct alive. And you'll take my knot in front of them all."

Her breath caught. "Roman."

"It's not a threat. It's a promise."

The pack began to move, pairing off, their bodies intertwining in the firelight. Sadie watched, her scientific mind struggling to catalog what she was seeing. But the drink had loosened her thoughts, and the images blurred into sensation.

A woman cried out as her mate took her from behind, her body arching against his. A man knelt before his partner, his mouth working between her thighs. The sounds of pleasure filled the clearing, and Sadie's body responded, heat pooling in her core.

"You're watching," Roman said, his voice rough. "What do you see?"

"Connection," she whispered. "Belonging."

"Yes." His hand slid down her back, pressing her closer. "That's what I'm giving you."

She turned in his arms, facing the clearing. The pack moved together, a dance of flesh and instinct. She could smell them, taste them on the air. Her body ached with a need she couldn't name.

"Let me show you," Roman said, and she nodded without thinking.

He led her to the edge of the clearing, where furs had been spread on the ground. The firelight flickered, casting shadows that moved like living things.

"Kneel," he said softly.

She knelt.

His hands found the ties of her robe, loosening them until the leather fell away from her shoulders. The night air kissed her skin, and she shivered.

"You're beautiful," he said. "More beautiful than I imagined."

"When did you imagine this?"

"The first time I saw you." His fingers traced the symbols painted on her skin. "When you stepped out of that truck, clipboard in hand, arguing with the station manager about protocol. I knew you were mine."

She should have been offended. Instead, she felt a thrill of possession. His. She was his.

He circled behind her, his hands on her shoulders, pressing her forward until her palms rested on the furs. Her body remembered this position. Remembered the weight of him.

"Not tonight," he said, reading her thoughts. "Tonight, you watch. You learn. You accept."

His hands slid down her sides, over her hips, along her thighs. He didn't enter her. He didn't take her. He simply touched, mapping her body, learning her curves.

The pack continued their rites around them, their sounds filling the night. Sadie closed her eyes and let herself feel. The furs beneath her knees. The air on her skin. Roman's hands on her body.

"This is where you belong," he murmured. "With us. With me."

She wanted to argue. She wanted to hold onto her old life, her old identity. But the pack's scent was in her lungs, and Roman's touch was on her skin, and the drink had opened something inside her that she couldn't close.

"I can feel you changing," he said. "Your scent is shifting. Your body is preparing."

"I know." Her voice was barely a whisper.

"When the full moon rises, you'll be ready. You'll take my knot and the pack will accept you. And you'll never question where you belong again."

She wanted that. God help her, she wanted that.

He helped her stand, wrapping the robe around her shoulders. The pack was still moving, still connected, but their attention had shifted to her.

"Tomorrow, you'll learn more," Roman said. "Tonight, you rest."

He led her away from the clearing, back toward the buildings. But she couldn't stop looking over her shoulder, watching the pack move together in the firelight.

They reached a cabin at the edge of the settlement, smaller than the others but warm and inviting. Roman opened the door and guided her inside.

"Rest," he said. "I'll be close."

"Stay."

The word surprised her. But once spoken, she couldn't take it back.

His eyes darkened. "Are you sure?"

"No. But I don't want to be alone."

He pulled her against him, his arms wrapping around her. She could feel his heartbeat, steady and strong. Could smell his scent, pine and smoke and something deeper.

"I'll stay," he said. "But I won't take you tonight. Not until you're ready."

She nodded against his chest, her eyes closing. The drink was wearing off, leaving her heavy and warm.

He carried her to the bed, laying her down on the furs. Then he stretched out beside her, his body a wall of heat against her back.

"Sleep," he said. "Tomorrow, you learn the rest."

And despite everything, despite the chaos of her thoughts and the changes in her body, she slept.

Full Moon Rite

The clearing opened before her like a wound in the forest. Torches lined the perimeter, their flames painting the gathered pack in shifting shades of gold and shadow. Sadie stood at the edge, Borler's hand steady on her elbow, and felt the weight of every amber eye.

Dozens of them. Perhaps more than a hundred.

They formed a wide circle around the central space, their bodies still, their breathing synchronized. The full moon hung directly overhead, so bright it cast silver shadows across the grass. Sadie's skin prickled with awareness. The air smelled different here. Thicker. Charged with something ancient that pressed against her tongue.

"They're waiting," Borler said quietly. "You're ready."

Sadie wasn't sure that was true. But her body hummed with an energy she no longer fought. The past days had changed her. The private claiming in the den. The preparation in the territory. The slow erosion of her scientific detachment. She was different now. She felt it in her bones.

Roman stood at the center of the circle. He was shirtless, his broad chest painted with ceremonial markings that caught the torchlight. His eyes found hers across the distance, and the world narrowed to that single point of connection.

"Come," he said. His voice carried without effort, cutting through the night air.

Borler released her elbow. Sadie walked forward. The pack parted silently, creating a path that closed behind her. She felt their gazes on her skin like physical touch. Assessing. Welcoming. Hungry.

Roman extended his hand. She took it. His fingers closed around hers, warm and steady, grounding her in the middle of the storm.

"Tonight," Roman said, his voice pitched for the pack, "the Emberhowl Pack claims its mate. Sadie Mercer stands before you, transformed by the bond, ready to join our blood and our territory."

A low rumble of approval moved through the circle. Not quite a growl. Not quite words. A sound of belonging.

Roman turned her to face the pack. His hands settled on her shoulders, then moved to the ties of the ceremonial robe she wore. The fabric was thin, almost translucent, and it fell away under his fingers like water. She stood naked before them, her skin flushed under the moonlight.

The exposure should have terrified her. A month ago, it would have. But her body had stopped belonging to her old self. Her breasts felt heavier, her hips wider, her skin more sensitive to the slightest breeze. She lifted her chin and met the pack's gaze.

"She bears my scent," Roman said, his hand pressing against her lower back. "She bears my mark. Tonight, she takes her place among us."

The pack howled. The sound rose from the circle, a unified cry that shook the air and vibrated through her chest. Sadie's breath caught. The howl wasn't just noise. It was power, shared and amplified, and it pulled at something deep inside her.

Roman's hands guided her down. She knelt on the soft grass, the earth cool against her knees. He stood over her, his body blocking the moon for a moment, and then he knelt behind her, his chest pressing against her back, his arms wrapping around her waist.

"This is the claiming," he murmured against her ear. "In front of the pack. Under the full moon. You're mine, Sadie. And they'll witness it."

She nodded. Her voice was lost somewhere in the thrum of her blood.

His hands moved over her body, slow and deliberate, tracing the lines of her hips, the curve of her waist, the swell of her breasts. Every touch was a statement. A marking. The pack watched in silence, their breathing the only sound.

"Look at them," Roman said. "See your pack."

She raised her eyes. The circle of faces was close now. Men and women, their eyes gleaming with reflected firelight. Some had shifted partially, their features sharpening into wolfish angles. Others remained human, their bodies tense with contained energy.

Roman's hand slid between her thighs. She gasped, her hips shifting forward instinctively. He parted her folds, finding her already slick and ready. The heat that had been building all day, all week, flared under his touch.

"You're wet for them," he said, his voice a low growl. "Your body knows what it needs."

She couldn't deny it. Her arousal was unmistakable, her scent thickening in the night air. The pack inhaled, drawing her into their lungs, and the rumble of approval grew louder.

Roman positioned himself behind her. She felt the head of his cock pressing against her entrance, thick and insistent. He didn't push in. He waited, letting the anticipation build, letting the pack watch him hold her on the edge of consummation.

"Ask me," he said. His voice was rough, strained.

"Please," she whispered.

"Louder."

"Please, Roman." Her voice cracked. "Claim me."

He thrust forward, filling her in one long, smooth motion. She cried out, her body arching against him. The pack surged closer, their circle tightening, their heat pressing in from all sides. Roman's hands gripped her hips, holding her steady as he began to move.

The rhythm was slow at first. Deep, grinding thrusts that stretched her open, that pressed against every sensitive spot inside her. His breath was hot against her neck, his chest solid against her back. The torches flickered, casting dancing shadows across the watching faces.

"You feel that?" Roman asked, his voice strained. "The pack feels it too. Every thrust. Every pulse. You're ours now, Sadie."

She could feel it. The weight of their attention was a physical pressure, a warmth that wrapped around her like a second skin. She was being claimed, but she was also claiming them. The bond that had started in the den was expanding, weaving itself into the fabric of the pack.

Roman's pace quickened. His breathing grew ragged, his grip bruising. She met his rhythm, pushing back against him, her body demanding more. The heat inside her was building, coiling low in her belly, and she knew what was coming.

The knot began to swell.

It pressed against her entrance, stretching her in a way that was both painful and exquisite. Roman groaned, his body shuddering behind her. "Take it," he said. "Take all of it."

She bore down, her muscles clenching around him, drawing him deeper. The knot locked into place, sealing them together, and the wave of sensation crashed over her. Her orgasm hit like a thunderclap, tearing a cry from her throat that was almost a howl.

Roman followed, his release hot and pulsing inside her. The pack howled with him, their voices rising in a chorus that shook the ground. Sadie's vision blurred. The world dissolved into sensation, into belonging, into the overwhelming knowledge that she was no longer separate.

The heat surged.

It came from inside her, from the moon, from the pack. It was a fire that consumed everything rational, everything controlled. Sadie's body took over. She pushed back against Roman, grinding against him, demanding more even as he spilled inside her.

"I need," she gasped. "I need more."

Roman's laugh was a low growl. "The heat is on you now. You'll need all of us before the night is done."

He didn't pull out. He couldn't, not until the knot subsided. But his hands moved over her body, stroking her, teasing her, keeping her on the edge. The pack pressed closer, their hands reaching out to touch her, to stroke her hair, her arms, her back.

Sadie surrendered. She let them touch her, let them worship her with their hands and their eyes. The bond that connected her to Roman was expanding, branching out to touch each member of the pack. She felt their hunger. Their approval. Their love.

The knot finally released. Roman withdrew slowly, his cock sliding out of her with a wet sound. But the heat didn't fade. It burned hotter, demanding satisfaction.

"Please," she said, turning to face the pack. "I need..."

She didn't know how to finish the sentence. Her body knew what it wanted, but her mind was drowning in sensation.

Galic stepped forward. His broad frame blocked the torchlight, his eyes dark with restrained desire. "She's in full heat," he said to Roman. "She needs more than one knot."

Roman nodded. "Take her. But remember the hierarchy."

Galic knelt in front of her. His hands were rough as he lifted her, positioning her over his lap. She straddled him without hesitation, her body moving on instinct. He was thick, not as long as Roman, but heavier. She sank onto him with a moan, her walls clenching around the new intrusion.

The pack cheered. The sound was primal, a celebration of flesh and bond. Galic's hands gripped her hips, guiding her as she rode him. His knot swelled faster than Roman's, locking them together as he came, his growl vibrating through her chest.

She didn't stop. She couldn't. The heat drove her, pushed her to seek more, to take everything the pack offered. One after another, the men of the pack came to her. Borler took her from behind, her touch surprisingly gentle. Others followed, their bodies different, their rhythms unique, but their purpose the same.

They filled her. They marked her. They claimed every inch of her body until she lost count, until the night blurred into a continuous stream of sensation and belonging.

When the moon finally began to set, Sadie lay in the center of the circle, her body aching, her skin slick with sweat and seed. Roman gathered her into his arms, cradling her against his chest. The pack surrounded them, their bodies forming a protective wall.

"You're ours," Roman said, his voice soft now. "Completely. Irreversibly."

Sadie smiled. Her throat was raw from crying out, her muscles weak from exertion. But she felt alive in a way she had never known was possible.

"I know," she said. "I'm home."

The pack howled one last time as the moon slipped below the horizon. Sadie closed her eyes, letting the sound wash over her. She was Sadie of the Emberhowl Pack. She was a mate. She was claimed.

And she had never been more free.

Deepening Integration

The pack den smelled of earth and musk, the lingering warmth of bodies still clinging to the air. Sadie woke with her cheek pressed against Roman's chest, the steady thrum of his heartbeat a rhythm she already knew by heart. Her body ached in places that felt newly claimed, sore in a way that made her press closer instead of pulling away.

She remembered the full moon rite in fragments. The circle of wolves. The weight of Roman's knot. The surge of heat that had turned her into something she did not recognize. But she recognized it now. She recognized the hunger that still hummed beneath her skin, patient and waiting.

"You're awake," Roman said. His voice was a low rumble against her ear.

"I'm awake." She lifted her head and looked at him. His amber eyes held hers, and she saw the satisfaction there. The patience. The certainty.

"You're different today."

She felt it. The world was sharper. She could hear the breath of pack members in the other chambers of the den. She could smell pine on the wind, the distant promise of snow, the warm blood of the wolves outside. Roman's scent made her mouth water.

"I'm different," she said. And she wasn't afraid of it anymore.

Roman's hand moved down her back, tracing the curve of her spine. His touch was deliberate. Worshipful. "The first night is the hardest. Your body fought what it was becoming. Now it knows."

Sadie felt the truth of his words in her bones. She was still Sadie Mercer. But she was also something else now. Something that belonged here.

"I want to stay," she said. The words came out before she could think about them. She meant them.

Roman's smile was slow and dark. "You'll stay. You're pack now. You're mine."

He rolled her onto her back, and the weight of him settled over her. His mouth found her throat, and she tilted her head back, offering. The vulnerability felt like strength.

That night, he took her again. But it was different from the rite. There was no frenzy, no heat driving her beyond reason. There was only Roman, patient and deliberate, moving inside her with a rhythm that felt like a conversation. She wrapped her legs around his waist and pulled him deeper.

"Tell me what you want," he said against her mouth.

"You," she said. "I want you. I want this."

He thrust harder, and the pleasure built slow and deep. She felt his knot begin to swell, and she pushed against it, wanting the fullness. He groaned and buried his face in her neck.

"Good," he said. "You're so good for me."

She climaxed with his name on her lips, and the knot locked them together. She felt the pulse of his release inside her, and she held him there, unwilling to let him go.

The next day, Sadie walked the pack territory. Borler appeared at her side, silent as always.

"You're adjusting," Borler said. It wasn't a question.

"I am." Sadie looked at the trees, the mountains, the sky. Everything looked different now. More vivid. More alive. "I can hear the stream from here. I can smell the deer in the valley."

Borler nodded. "Your senses will sharpen more. Your body will change. You'll be able to shift by the next moon."

The idea should have terrified her. Instead, it made something in her chest ache with longing.

That evening, Roman found her by the fire. The pack was gathered in the main clearing, eating and talking. The sounds of their voices washed over her, and she felt the strange comfort of being surrounded.

"Tonight, Galic will join us," Roman said. His voice was low, meant only for her.

Sadie's heart stuttered. She looked at Galic across the fire. He was broad and stern, his eyes fixed on the flames. He had watched her during the rite. She had felt his gaze.

"Is that what you want?" Roman asked.

She thought about the pack hierarchy, the way the alpha's mate belonged to the pack as well as to him. She thought about the way Galic's presence had felt during the rite, steady and strong.

"Yes," she said. The word felt like a choice. Like power.

Roman's hand found hers and squeezed. "Good. You'll kneel for me. He'll take you. I'll watch."

Later, in the chamber Roman had claimed for them, Sadie knelt on the furs. The firelight flickered against the walls. Roman stood behind her, his hand in her hair.

Galic entered. He was stripped to the waist, his body scarred and powerful. He looked at Roman first, waiting.

"Take her," Roman said. "Slowly."

Galic knelt in front of her. His hands were rough when they touched her face, but his touch was gentle. He kissed her, and his mouth tasted different from Roman's. Sharper. She kissed him back, curious.

Roman's hand tightened in her hair. "Tell me what you feel."

"His hands," she said, breathless. "His mouth."

Galic's hands moved down her body, learning her. He was more hesitant than Roman, more careful. When he pushed her back onto the furs, she went willingly.

Roman guided them. His voice was a constant presence, low and commanding. "Touch her here. Slower. Yes."

Galic's body was heavier than Roman's, his rhythm different. He entered her with a groan, and she felt the stretch, the fullness. Roman watched, his eyes dark and hungry.

"Look at me," Roman said. She did. He held her gaze while Galic moved inside her, and the intimacy of it broke something open in her chest.

She climaxed with a cry, and Galic followed, his knot locking them together. Roman knelt beside her and kissed her forehead.

"You're pack," he said. "You're ours."

On the third night, Sadie felt the bond pulling her. She wanted to explore. She wanted to understand the pack in a way she had not yet.

She found Borler in the observation chamber, staring out at the moon.

"You're not with Roman tonight," Borler said.

"He's with Galic. Discussing pack matters." Sadie stepped closer. The scent of Borler was different. Cleaner. Like pine and rain.

"I want to know you," Sadie said. "I want to feel what it's like with someone who isn't the alpha."

Borler turned. Her hazel eyes were unreadable. "You're asking for this?"

"I'm asking."

Borler reached out and touched Sadie's face. Her fingers were calloused, her touch light. She leaned in and kissed her, soft and questioning.

Sadie kissed her back. She let her hands explore the lean lines of Borler's body, the muscles that moved beneath her skin. Borler's touch was different from the men. Slower. More curious.

They undressed each other in silence. Borler laid her down on the furs and traced the curve of her hip with her fingers.

"You're beautiful," Borler said. "The alpha chose well."

"Touch me," Sadie said. "I want to feel you."

Borler's mouth found her breasts, her stomach, the inside of her thighs. Sadie gasped at the sensation. It was not the overwhelming force of Roman or the controlled weight of Galic. It was exploration. Discovery.

Borler's fingers found her center, and Sadie arched into the touch. She felt the pleasure build, different but no less intense. She reached down and guided Borler's hand, showing her what she wanted.

"Here," Sadie said. "Yes."

Borler obeyed. She learned Sadie's body with her hands and her mouth, and Sadie let herself be learned. She climaxed with a shudder, her hands fisted in Borler's hair.

When it was done, they lay together in the dark. Borler's arm was warm around her waist.

"Thank you," Sadie said. "For trusting me."

Borler pressed a kiss to her shoulder. "You're pack. That's enough."

Sadie returned to Roman in the early hours. He was waiting for her, his eyes knowing.

"You went to Borler."

"I did."

He pulled her into his arms. "And what did you learn?"

"That I belong here." She pressed her face into his chest. "That I want to belong here. That I'll do whatever it takes to stay."

Roman's arms tightened around her. "You're already home, Sadie. You just needed to find your way here."

She felt the truth of it settle into her bones. The changes were irreversible. Her body was no longer human in the way it had been. Her senses were sharper. Her desires were deeper. Her heart belonged to the pack.

She was Sadie Mercer, wildlife biologist, former skeptic, former outsider.

She was Roman's mate. She was pack.

And she was finally home.

Territory Acceptance

The moon hung full and heavy over the Emberhowl territory, its silver light painting the clearing in shades of bone and shadow. Sadie stood at the edge of the circle, her body humming with energy she no longer tried to suppress. The past weeks had stripped away everything she thought she knew about herself, leaving something raw and new in its place.

Tonight was the final rite. She understood that now, the way the pack had been preparing her for this moment since the first full moon ceremony. Each night of knotting and claiming had been a step toward this. Her old life, her career, her identity as a detached observer, all of it felt like a distant memory, a story about someone else.

She wore the ceremonial pelts the pack women had gifted her, soft fur draped over her shoulders and hips. The fabric of her old field clothes had been torn and discarded days ago, replaced by garments that marked her as belonging to the pack. Her auburn hair fell loose around her shoulders, tangled from the nights of running through the forest on four legs.

Roman emerged from the shadows of the trees, his dark hair catching the moonlight. He wore nothing but the ritual markings painted across his chest, swirling patterns of ash and clay that traced the lines of his muscles. His amber eyes found hers immediately, and the connection between them pulsed like a second heartbeat.

"You're ready," he said, his voice carrying that low commanding tone that made her knees weak.

"I know." Sadie's voice came out steadier than she expected. She felt ready. The fear and resistance that had plagued her in those early days had burned away, replaced by something primal and certain. She wanted this. She wanted him. She wanted the pack.

Galic stepped forward, his broad frame blocking the moonlight for a moment. He carried a bowl of dark liquid in his hands, the scent of earth and blood rising from it. "The marking," he said, his voice gruff with ceremony. "You accept the bond fully tonight. There's no going back."

"I understand." Sadie met his gaze, seeing the protective wariness that had softened over the weeks. He wasn't her enemy. He was her packmate now, and she respected the hierarchy he enforced.

Roman took the bowl from Galic and dipped his fingers into the dark liquid. He stepped close to her, close enough that she could feel the heat radiating from his body. His fingers traced a line down her forehead, between her eyes, continuing along the bridge of her nose to her lips. She parted them instinctively, tasting the metallic sweetness of the marking paste.

"This seals you to me," he murmured, his fingers continuing their path down her chin, her throat, the hollow between her collarbones. "To the pack."

She held still as he painted the symbols across her chest, her stomach, her hips. Each stroke of his fingers sent shivers through her. The paste felt warm against her skin, almost alive, pulsing with the same energy that hummed in the earth beneath her feet.

When he finished, he stepped back and the pack formed a circle around them. Borler stood at the edge, her hazel eyes watchful but warm. The other pack members, faces Sadie had come to know over the past weeks, ringed the clearing. They watched in silence, their breathing synchronized, their presence a weight that pressed against her from all sides.

Roman raised his hands to the moon. "This woman comes to us willingly," he declared, his voice carrying through the night. "She has run with us, hunted with us, bled with us. She has accepted our ways and our bonds. Tonight, she becomes pack."

The wolves howled, a chorus of voices that rose and fell like a living thing. Sadie felt the vibration in her chest, and she answered it. A sound rose from her throat, not quite a howl, not quite a word, but something in between. The acknowledgment of belonging.

Roman turned to face her fully. "Kneel."

She dropped to her knees without hesitation, the soft earth giving beneath her weight. The grass felt cool against her bare legs. The pelts rustled around her shoulders. She looked up at him, her green eyes meeting his amber gaze, and saw the hunger there, the deep primal need that matched her own.

He moved behind her, his hands gripping her shoulders. His breath was hot against her ear. "This is the final claiming," he said, his voice low enough that only she could hear. "After tonight, you're mine completely. The pack's. There's no separation anymore."

"I know," she whispered back. "I want that."

His hands slid down her arms, pushing the pelts aside until they pooled at her waist. The night air kissed her bare skin, but she didn't shiver. Her body had adapted, changed, become something that ran warm even in the cold mountain nights.

Roman's chest pressed against her back, the ritual markings smearing against her painted skin. She felt his erection against her lower back, thick and insistent, and her body responded with a rush of heat that made her gasp. The weeks of knotting had rewired her, made her crave this contact the way she craved air.

"The pack watches," he said, his hand sliding down her stomach, between her thighs. "They witness the bond. They accept you as one of them."

His fingers found her wet and ready, and she moaned, leaning back against his chest. The public nature of this, the eyes of the pack on her, should have made her self-conscious. Instead, it made her feel powerful. She was being claimed, yes, but she was also choosing this. Every step of the way, she had chosen.

His fingers stroked through her slick folds, gathering the wetness that had been building since the ceremony began. He circled her entrance, teasing, before sliding one finger inside. She gasped, her inner walls clenching around him. A second finger joined the first, stretching her open, preparing her for what was to come.

"You're so wet," he growled against her ear. "So ready for me."

"I've been ready," she breathed. "I've been ready all night."

His thumb found her clit, pressing in slow circles that made her hips buck against his hand. The pleasure coiled in her belly, tight and insistent. She could feel her own arousal dripping down her inner thighs, could smell it mixing with the earth and blood scent of the ritual paste.

Roman withdrew his fingers and guided her forward, onto her hands and knees. The grass tickled her palms. The moon cast her shadow long across the clearing. She looked back over her shoulder at him, seeing the raw hunger in his face, the control he was barely maintaining.

"Please," she said, the word escaping before she could stop it.

He didn't make her wait. He positioned himself behind her, the head of his cock pressing against her entrance. He pushed in slowly, deliberately, giving her time to feel every inch of him filling her. She gasped, her fingers digging into the earth as her body stretched to accommodate him.

He was larger than she remembered, or maybe she was more sensitive now, her body attuned to every ridge and vein. He seated himself fully inside her, his hips flush against hers, and paused. The fullness was overwhelming, perfect, exactly what she needed.

"Look at them," he commanded, his voice rough. "Look at your pack."

She raised her head and saw them, the ring of wolves and shifters, their eyes glowing in the moonlight. They watched with reverence, with hunger, with acceptance. She was theirs now, as much as Roman was. The bond extended beyond him, through him, into every member of the pack.

Roman began to move, long slow strokes that dragged against her inner walls. Each thrust sent waves of pleasure through her, building from her core outward. She rocked back against him, meeting his rhythm, her body moving in perfect sync with his.

The friction of him inside her was exquisite. She could feel every contour of his cock as he pulled back until only the tip remained inside her, then drove forward again. The wet sounds of their joining filled the clearing, obscene and beautiful. Her breasts swayed with each thrust, her nipples hard and aching in the cool night air.

"You feel that?" he asked, his hand reaching around to cup her breast. "That's the pack bond. It's alive in you now."

She did feel it. A warmth that spread from where they were joined, through her chest, down her limbs. The sensation of being connected to every person in the clearing, their emotions brushing against hers, their pleasure and anticipation mixing with her own.

His thumb brushed over her nipple, pinching and rolling the sensitive peak until she cried out. The dual sensations of him filling her and his hands on her body were almost too much. She pushed back against him, taking him deeper, wanting more.

"Harder," she begged. "Please, Roman, harder."

He obliged, his hips snapping forward with increased force. The impact pushed her across the grass, her hands scraping against the earth. She braced herself, arching her back, changing the angle so he hit that spot inside her that made stars explode behind her eyes.

"There," she gasped. "Right there."

Roman's pace increased, his breathing ragged. She could feel him swelling inside her, the base of his cock thickening as the knot began to form. Her body clenched around him, eager for it, needing the fullness that only his knot could provide.

The knot grew gradually, each thrust stretching her wider. The pressure was intense, bordering on too much, but her body had learned to take it, had learned to crave the impossible fullness. She felt herself opening around him, her inner walls yielding and clenching in alternating waves.

"I'm close," she gasped, the pressure building in her core.

"Not yet," he growled, slowing his thrusts. "Not until I say."

She whimpered, the denial sharp and sweet. He had taught her this, over the weeks, the art of waiting, of letting the pleasure build until it was unbearable. She had learned to trust his control, to surrender to his timing.

His hand slid between her thighs, his fingers finding her clit. He circled it with practiced precision, and she bucked against him, her body begging for release. The knot continued to swell, binding them together, ensuring that when she came, she would come with him buried deep inside her, his seed flooding her womb.

"Feel it building," he said, his voice strained now, his own control slipping. "Feel the pack. They're with you. Every one of them."

She could. Through the bond, she felt their arousal, their anticipation. Borler's watchful excitement. Galic's grudging approval. The younger wolves' hunger and hope. It all poured into her, mixing with her own pleasure until she was drowning in sensation.

Roman's thrusts became shorter, harder, the knot preventing him from pulling out fully. Each movement sent jolts of pleasure through her, the swollen base of his cock pressing against her G-spot with every stroke. She was sobbing with it now, tears streaming down her face, her body trembling on the edge.

"Now," he said, his voice breaking. "Come for me. Come for the pack."

The orgasm crashed through her, violent and overwhelming. Her body clenched around him in rhythmic waves, milking his cock as the pleasure consumed her. She felt his knot expand fully, locking them together, and he thrust deep, once, twice, and then he was coming, hot and thick inside her. His roar echoed through the clearing as his seed pulsed into her in long spurts.

The pack howled with him, their voices rising to the moon. Sadie felt the sound vibrate through her bones, felt the bond snap into place like a lock clicking shut. She was connected to them, to Roman, to the territory, in a way that transcended words.

They stayed locked together, his knot holding them in place. Sadie's arms gave out, and she collapsed onto the grass, Roman following her down, still buried inside her. He wrapped his arms around her, pulling her against his chest.

"You're pack," he whispered against her hair. "Finally. Completely."

Tears pricked at her eyes, not from sadness but from the overwhelming rightness of it. She had spent her whole life searching for belonging, for a place where she fit. She had found it in the most unexpected way, in a pack of shifters in a restricted mountain range.

"What happens now?" she asked, her voice muffled against his arm.

"Now you live," he said. "You run with us, hunt with us, raise pups with us. You're a breeding member of the pack. We'll have children, Sadie. Our children will carry the Emberhowl legacy."

The thought should have terrified her. Children meant permanence, a future she had never planned for. Instead, it felt right. The instincts that had awakened in her craved it, the need to nurture and protect and grow the pack.

"What about my old life?" she asked, though she already knew the answer.

"It's gone," Roman said gently. "You can't go back. Your body has changed too much. You're one of us now, in every way that matters."

She nodded, accepting it. The research station, her equipment, her career as a wildlife biologist, all of it felt like a dream she was waking from. The real world was here, in the pack, in Roman's arms, in the moon that called to her blood.

His knot softened, and he slipped out of her, rolling her onto her back. He looked down at her, his amber eyes soft with something that looked like love. "I've waited for you," he said. "I didn't know it, but I've been waiting my whole life."

She reached up and touched his face, her fingers tracing the strong line of his jaw. "I didn't know I was waiting too."

The pack dispersed, leaving them alone in the clearing. The moon had begun its descent, the first hints of dawn painting the eastern sky. Sadie felt the change building in her, the shift that was no longer a choice but a part of her.

"Let me see you," Roman said, his voice a command and a plea. "Shift for me. For the first time as pack."

She closed her eyes and let the change take her. It was easier now, smoother, the bones reshaping and the fur sprouting from her skin. She felt herself shrink, felt her senses sharpen, felt the world become a symphony of scents and sounds.

When she opened her eyes, she saw the world in shades of gray and silver. Roman had shifted too, a massive wolf standing over her, his amber eyes familiar even in this form. She rose on four legs, her tail wagging instinctively.

He nuzzled her, his muzzle pressing against her neck, breathing in her scent. She whined softly, pressing against him, feeling the pack bond thrum between them. They were mates now, in every sense of the word.

They ran together through the forest, their paws silent on the soft earth. The territory opened up before them, mountains and valleys and streams that Sadie now knew as intimately as her own body. She had tracked these trails on two legs, mapped them with her equipment. Now she knew them with her nose, her fur, her blood.

Dawn broke over the mountains as they returned to the pack clearing. The others were gathered, waiting. Borler stepped forward, her wolf form sleek and dark, and touched her nose to Sadie's. The gesture of acceptance, of welcome.

Galic shifted back to human form, his broad body streaked with ritual paint. He approached Sadie and placed his hand on her head, a benediction. "Welcome to the Emberhowl," he said, his voice rough with emotion. "Sister."

The word hit her like a blow, warm and unexpected. She had been an only child, a loner, a woman who kept people at arm's length. Now she had brothers and sisters, a family bound by blood and bond and the moon.

She shifted back, the change flowing through her like water. She stood naked in the morning light, her body covered in the remnants of ritual markings. Roman shifted beside her, pulling her into his arms.

"I love you," she said, the words surprising her. She hadn't planned to say them, but they felt true, as true as the bond that tied them together.

Roman's arms tightened around her. "I love you too. More than territory, more than pack, more than anything."

The pack surrounded them, their bodies warm and close, their hands reaching out to touch Sadie's shoulders, her arms, her back. She was enveloped in them, held by them, accepted by them.

In the distance, she could see the research station, the small building where her old life had ended. It looked abandoned now, the equipment left behind, the data uncollected. The Reintroduction Project was over, at least for her. The wolves had been reintroduced, but not the way anyone had expected.

She turned away from the station, facing the pack, facing Roman, facing her future. The transformation was complete. She was no longer Sadie Mercer, wildlife biologist. She was Sadie of the Emberhowl, mate of Alpha Roman Durst, pack member, shifter, woman reborn in the light of the moon.

And she had never felt more whole.
