Cracks in the Foundation

Angelina Willis adjusted the strap of her black dress and scanned the crowded ballroom. The annual company gala always felt like a performance, and tonight she played the supportive wife with practiced ease. Her shoulder-length auburn hair caught the light as she sipped her wine, eyes drifting across the room until they landed on Jason.

He stood near the bar, tall and commanding in his tailored suit, that athletic build still evident even after years of desk work. His short dark hair was neatly combed, and those piercing blue eyes focused on the woman beside him. Cassandra Maldonado. Twenty-eight, sleek dark hair falling over one shoulder, her form-fitting red dress hugging every toned curve. Angelina watched as Jason leaned in, his hand brushing Cassandra's arm while he laughed at something she said. The touch lingered a second too long.

Angelina's stomach tightened. She had noticed the pattern over the past few months. Jason came home later, his mind still at the office. Their conversations had grown shorter, their nights together even shorter. She told herself it was just work stress, but watching him now, the way his smile widened for Cassandra, the subtle tilt of his head, she felt the first sharp crack in the foundation she had built so carefully.

Cassandra said something else, and Jason's gaze dropped briefly to her lips before returning to her eyes. It was subtle. Most people would miss it. Angelina did not. She set her glass down and moved toward the exit, her gentle curves shifting under the understated fabric of her dress. The drive home was quiet, Jason scrolling through his phone in the passenger seat while she gripped the wheel.

Once inside their home, the door clicked shut behind them. Angelina turned to face him in the dim light of the entryway. "You seemed to enjoy yourself tonight."

Jason looked up, eyebrows raised. "It was the usual crowd. Why do you sound like that?"

She crossed her arms, voice soft but steady. "I saw you with Cassandra. The way you were talking to her. Touching her arm like it was the most natural thing."

He sighed and loosened his tie. "She's a colleague, Angelina. We were discussing the merger. Nothing more."

"It looked like more." She stepped closer, her hazel eyes searching his face. "You've been distracted lately. Distant. I can't remember the last time we really talked, or touched. And tonight you lit up around her in a way you haven't with me in months."

Jason ran a hand through his hair. The commanding presence he carried at work softened here, replaced by something more hesitant. "I didn't realize it showed that much. I'm sorry if it bothered you."

Angelina led them into the living room, perching on the edge of the couch. The silence stretched until she broke it. "I feel like I'm losing you, Jason. Not all at once, but piece by piece. The intimacy we used to have, it's fading. I don't know if it's me or the job or something else."

He sat beside her, close but not touching. "It's not you. You're still the first person I think of when I wake up. But work has been intense, and Cassandra is sharp. She pushes ideas that get results. I guess I got caught up in the energy of it."

Angelina's fingers twisted in her lap. "So you admit there's an attraction?"

Jason met her gaze directly. "A mild one. She's young and confident. It is flattering when someone like that pays attention. But it doesn't change how I feel about you. About us."

The admission hung between them, sparking tension that made Angelina's pulse quicken even as her chest ached. She wanted to cry or yell, yet part of her needed to hear more. "Tell me what you see in her. Be honest. I can't fix what I don't understand."

He shifted, his voice low. "It's nothing serious. Just the way she carries herself. The confidence. I notice it, that's all. I didn't mean to make you feel insecure."

Angelina stood and paced a few steps, then turned back. "I am insecure. I've been trying not to be, but seeing you flirt with her tonight made it real. We used to talk about everything. Now I feel like I'm guessing. If there's fading intimacy, we should face it instead of pretending."

Jason reached for her hand and pulled her gently back to the couch. "You're right. I haven't been present the way I should. The long hours, the travel, it's taken a toll. I love you, Angelina. That hasn't changed. But maybe we both need to be more honest about what's missing."

She leaned into him, resting her head against his shoulder. The contact felt familiar yet fragile. "I don't want to lose what we have. I just need to know where I stand."

"You stand with me," he said, his tone softening with affection. "We'll figure this out. No more pretending the distance isn't there."

They sat together in the quiet house, the weight of the evening settling around them. Angelina felt the first honest discussion open a door she wasn't sure she wanted to walk through, but she knew they couldn't close it now. Jason's fingers traced small circles on her back, a small gesture of reassurance that did little to quiet the unease still simmering beneath her skin.

Outside, the night stretched on, and inside their home the cracks had begun to show in ways neither of them could ignore any longer.
