The First Approach

The ballroom of the Meridian Hotel shimmered under heavy chandeliers, their light fracturing across a sea of crystal glasses and polished marble floors. Sienna Murray stood at the edge of it all, one hand resting lightly on the stem of her champagne flute, the other clutching a small black evening bag against the silk of her emerald gown. The dress clung to her curves with tailored precision, the deep vee of its neckline offering the exact measured hint of cleavage that polite society would deem tasteful. At thirty-two, she had perfected the art of looking expensive without appearing available.

Steve was ten feet away, laughing too loudly at a donor's joke. His medium build filled out his navy suit nicely enough, and his conventionally handsome face wore the practiced smile that had carried him through two terms in the state senate. Tonight he was hunting bigger game. Every handshake, every clap on the back, every murmured assurance about tax incentives was another brick in the wall of his gubernatorial campaign. Sienna had heard the speech so many times she could recite it in her sleep.

She took a slow sip of champagne and felt the familiar hollow ache settle behind her ribs. Three years of this marriage, and the only thing that had grown was Steve's poll numbers. The nights had grown colder. The touches, when they came at all, were perfunctory. She had become exactly what the consultants wanted: the elegant, supportive wife who never upstaged, never complained, never needed anything as messy as passion.

Her gaze drifted across the room and snagged on him.

Caleb Mondays stood near the bar like a man who owned the air around him. Forty years old, broad through the shoulders, with the kind of rugged handsomeness that made tailored suits look like an afterthought. His dark hair was just slightly tousled, as if he'd run his fingers through it after closing some million-dollar deal. Even from this distance Sienna could feel the pull of his presence. He wasn't working the room the way Steve was. He didn't need to. People drifted toward him naturally, drawn by the low rumble of his laugh and the way his eyes seemed to promise something darker than campaign promises.

He was Steve's rival for the party's nomination. Where Steve was polished, Caleb was raw. Where Steve quoted policy, Caleb spoke in blunt truths that somehow made donors open their wallets wider. The press called it charisma. Sienna, watching him now, suspected it was something more primal.

She looked away too quickly, annoyed at the flush she felt creeping up her neck.

"You keep staring like that and people will talk, Mrs. Murray."

The voice came from just behind her left shoulder, low and rough with amusement. Sienna's spine straightened instinctively. She turned, arranging her face into the polite mask she wore at these events.

Caleb Mondays stood closer than social convention allowed. Close enough that she caught the scent of him, something woodsy and expensive with a hint of smoke. His eyes, a deep hazel that looked almost black in the low light, traveled over her with open appreciation. Not the furtive glances she was used to from other politicians. This was blatant. Possessive.

"Mr. Mondays," she said, keeping her voice cool and even. "I wasn't staring. I was simply observing the competition."

His mouth curved into a slow smile that did unforgivable things to her pulse. "Is that what I am? Competition?" He leaned in a fraction, voice dropping. "Or is your husband the one competing? Because from where I'm standing, he's doing a shit job of keeping your attention."

Sienna's fingers tightened around her clutch. The audacity of him. She should have walked away. Instead she lifted her chin and met his gaze.

"My husband's attention is on matters that will shape the future of this state. Not every man needs to perform for an audience."

Caleb's chuckle was soft, almost intimate. "Perform. Interesting choice of words." His eyes flicked down to the hollow of her throat, then lower for just a heartbeat. "Tell me, Sienna. When's the last time someone performed for you?"

The sound of her first name in his mouth felt dangerous. She hadn't given him permission to use it. The fact that he simply took the liberty sent an unwelcome spark of heat through her belly.

"That's hardly appropriate conversation," she said, but her voice came out breathier than she intended.

"No," he agreed, stepping closer. The crowd seemed to fade around them. "But it's honest. Something I suspect you're starving for."

Before she could formulate a response, Steve's voice cut through the moment.

"Mondays. I see you've met my wife."

Steve appeared at her side, sliding a proprietary arm around her waist. Sienna fought the urge to step away from the touch. It felt performative, like everything else tonight. Caleb's eyes tracked the movement, and his smile never faltered. If anything, it sharpened.

"Steve," Caleb said, extending a hand. The two men shook with all the false warmth of rival predators. "Your wife was just telling me how dedicated you are to the issues. Admirable. Though between us, I'd say she's the most interesting thing in this entire room."

Sienna felt Steve's fingers flex against her hip. She kept her expression serene even as her heart hammered against her ribs. Caleb was playing a game, and she was suddenly, dangerously, the prize.

"She's certainly the best part of my campaign," Steve said with a laugh that didn't reach his eyes. "The voters love her."

"I'm sure they do." Caleb's gaze returned to Sienna, heavy and knowing. "Hard not to."

The tension stretched between the three of them until Sienna thought it might snap. She was acutely aware of Caleb's height, the breadth of his chest beneath his black shirt, the way his presence seemed to shrink Steve's beside her. Her body was reacting in ways that mortified her. A slow, liquid warmth had gathered between her thighs. Her nipples had tightened against the silk of her dress. All from a few charged words and a look.

She hated how easily her neglected body responded to him.

"If you'll excuse me," she said, slipping from Steve's grasp with practiced grace. "I need to powder my nose."

She didn't wait for permission. As she moved through the crowd, she could feel Caleb's eyes on her back like a physical touch. The sway of her hips suddenly felt different. More deliberate. More aware.

The ladies' room was blessedly empty. Sienna set her clutch on the marble counter and gripped the edge, staring at her reflection. Her cheeks were flushed. Her green eyes looked too bright, almost feverish. She pressed cool hands to her face and tried to steady her breathing.

What the hell was wrong with her?

Steve had been distant for months. Years, if she was honest. Their sex life had dwindled to occasional, mechanical encounters that left her more frustrated than satisfied. She had convinced herself she didn't need more. That this was the price of the life they had built.

One conversation with Caleb Mondays and that conviction was crumbling.

The door opened behind her. She didn't need to turn to know who it was. The air changed, growing thicker, charged.

"You ran away," Caleb said quietly. He didn't step fully inside, simply leaned against the doorframe, blocking the exit with his body. The risk of it thrilled her against her will.

"I didn't run. I excused myself."

"Same thing." He studied her in the mirror. "Your husband doesn't touch you like a man who knows what he's got. That's a fucking crime, Sienna."

She turned to face him, anger and arousal warring inside her chest. "You don't know anything about my marriage."

"I know the look of a woman who's been starving." He pushed off the doorframe and took one step into the room. Then another. "I know what it does to a woman like you. All that poise. All that elegance. And underneath?" His voice dropped to a rough whisper. "A body that's begging to be properly used."

Sienna's breath caught. The crude words should have offended her. Instead they lit a match to something dark and needy she hadn't known was there. She could feel her pulse between her legs, a heavy throb that matched her heartbeat.

"This is inappropriate," she managed.

"Probably." Caleb reached into his jacket pocket and withdrew a small white card. No name, just a phone number written in bold black ink. "But I think you're tired of appropriate."

He moved with deliberate slowness, giving her every chance to pull away. When she didn't, he slid the card into the opening of her clutch where it rested on the counter. His fingers brushed the back of her hand, and the contact sent electricity racing up her arm.

"Use it," he said. "Or don't. But we both know you'll be thinking about me when your husband falls asleep tonight without touching you."

Sienna stared at him, lips parted, unable to find the polished response she needed. Caleb's eyes dropped to her mouth for a long moment. She thought he might kiss her right there, in the women's restroom of the Meridian while two hundred donors mingled outside. The thought terrified her. It also made her wetter than she had been in years.

Instead he stepped back.

"Goodnight, Sienna. Tell Steve I said congratulations on that education bill. Very... adequate."

Then he was gone, the door swinging shut behind him.

She stood there for a full minute, heart thundering, before she snatched up her clutch. The card burned against her fingers through the leather. She should throw it away. Should tell Steve what had happened. Instead she tucked the clutch firmly under her arm and returned to the ballroom.

The rest of the evening passed in a haze. Steve continued his rounds. Sienna smiled and nodded and played the perfect wife while her mind replayed every word Caleb had spoken. Every look. The way his fingers had felt against her skin. By the time they finally climbed into the back of their town car, her thighs were clenched so tightly she worried Steve might notice.

He didn't.

At home, Steve immediately disappeared into his study to review donor notes. Sienna poured herself a glass of water in the kitchen and stood at the window overlooking their perfectly manicured lawn. The card was still in her clutch. She hadn't looked at the number again, but she didn't need to. It was seared into her memory.

She showered slowly, letting the hot water beat against her skin. Her hands moved over her body with more awareness than usual. When her fingers brushed between her legs she had to bite back a gasp at how slick she was. One stroke, then two, and she forced herself to stop. This was ridiculous. She was a grown woman, not some hormonal teenager.

By the time she slipped into bed wearing a silk camisole and matching shorts, Steve was already asleep. He lay on his back, mouth slightly open, the faint glow of his phone still charging on the nightstand. Sienna stared at the ceiling for what felt like hours.

Her clutch rested on the dresser across the room. She could almost feel the card inside it calling to her.

When her phone buzzed on the nightstand, she jumped. The screen lit up with an unknown number. Sienna's mouth went dry. She glanced at Steve, then carefully rolled onto her side, angling the phone so the glow wouldn't wake him.

The text was simple. Devastating.

Unknown: I can still smell your perfume on my fingers. Tell me you haven't touched that pretty pussy yet thinking about what I said.

Sienna's breath left her in a rush. Heat flooded her face, her chest, the space between her thighs. She read the message three times, pulse racing so hard she felt dizzy. Her thumbs hovered over the keyboard. She should delete it. Block the number. Instead she found herself typing.

Sienna: How did you get this number?

The response came almost immediately.

Caleb: I make it my business to know what I want. And I want you, Sienna. I want to peel that expensive dress off you and show you what a real man feels like between your legs. Your husband never has to know. Unless you want him to.

She pressed her thighs together, fighting the moan that tried to escape her throat. This was insane. Dangerous. Caleb Mondays was everything she should avoid. Crude. Arrogant. A direct threat to Steve's ambitions.

But her body didn't care about any of that. Her body remembered the way he'd looked at her like he already owned her. The way his voice had wrapped around her like smoke.

Another text arrived.

Caleb: Delete this conversation if you want. Pretend you're still the perfect little trophy wife. Or text me back tomorrow and admit what we both already know. You're wet right now just reading this. Aren't you?

Sienna's fingers trembled as she stared at the screen. Steve shifted beside her, murmuring something in his sleep about polling numbers. The sound should have filled her with guilt. Instead it only highlighted how alone she felt in this bed. In this marriage. In her own skin.

She didn't reply. But she didn't delete the messages either.

Instead she set her phone face down on the nightstand, rolled onto her back, and slipped one hand beneath the silk of her shorts. The first touch of her fingers against her swollen clit made her bite her lip hard enough to taste copper.

As she began to slowly circle that aching bundle of nerves, Sienna closed her eyes and saw Caleb Mondays's knowing smile. Heard his rough voice telling her how badly she needed to be used.

For the first time in years, she came with someone else's name trembling silently on her lips.
