The Accidental Binding

The stones of the tower held the chill of midnight even in late summer. Eloren Valmar moved through the circular chamber with the precise steps of someone who had rehearsed this moment in her mind a thousand times. Her midnight-black hair was bound in a tight braid that hung down her back, and her pale skin looked almost luminous in the glow of the seven black candles. The violet of her eyes reflected the flames as she finished drawing the final sigil with obsidian dust.

She should not be doing this alone. Every scroll she had studied warned against it. A shadow summoning required anchors, witnesses, at minimum a second practitioner to close the circle if the entity proved too strong. But Eloren had always preferred control, and control meant no witnesses to her ambition. She wanted power. She wanted to peer behind the veil and force it to reveal its secrets before the annual thinning reached its peak. If she could bind a minor shadow lord as her consort, her status among the arcane scholars would be unmatched.

Her slender fingers smoothed the edges of the ritual circle one last time. The scholarly robes she wore clung to the modest curves of her breasts and hips, the dark fabric whispering against her skin as she moved. She felt the familiar flutter of nerves in her belly but pushed it down. Curiosity and ambition had always won in her. Tonight would be no different.

She stepped to the small iron table and lifted the silver knife. One quick press against her palm and blood welled up, dark and glistening. She let three drops fall into the central bowl that contained crushed night-bloom petals, powdered raven bone, and a single tear of solidified shadow essence she had spent a fortune acquiring. The mixture hissed as her blood struck it. The scent of ozone and crushed velvet filled the tower room.

Eloren closed her eyes and began the incantation. Her voice started low and elegant, each syllable shaped with the precision of a scholar who had spent years mastering dead languages. The words rolled from her tongue like smoke. The candles flickered although there was no draft. The circle etched on the floor began to glow with threads of deepest indigo.

Power rose in the room like a living thing. It pressed against her skin, slid along her collarbone, teased the sensitive spots behind her knees. She kept chanting. The ancient phrases grew heavier, more commanding. Her pulse throbbed in her throat. This was the dangerous part. The moment of offering. She spoke the final call, the one that should summon a single shadow lord willing to bargain for a temporary bond.

The circle blazed. Two columns of darkness erupted from the center at the exact same instant, twisting around each other like fighting serpents. Eloren’s chant fractured. She stumbled backward, the silver knife clattering from her fingers. This was wrong. There should be one manifestation. One controlled entity. Not twin pillars of shadow that felt alive with opposing wills.

A low vibration filled the tower. The stones themselves seemed to hum. From the left column stepped a tall, ethereal figure. Silver hair flowed past his shoulders, catching what little light existed and turning it into starlight. His luminous silver eyes found hers immediately. Lord Caspian. She recognized him from the forbidden texts even as terror spiked through her veins. He was no minor lord. He was a shadow prince.

From the right column rose something far more primal. Jet-black hair, crimson eyes that burned like fresh blood, a muscular frame wrapped in leather and dark armor that looked forged from midnight itself. Scars across his neck and forearms glowed with inner shadow energy. Lord Dragard. The other prince. The one the scrolls described in words that hovered between warning and obscene worship.

Both princes fixed their gazes on her at the same moment. The air between the three of them snapped taut. Eloren felt it like a physical blow, a hook sinking deep behind her ribs and tugging. The binding threads she had meant to cast outward had reversed. They were wrapping around her instead, delicate as silk, strong as iron chains.

“No,” she whispered, voice cracking. “This was not the ritual. This cannot be happening.”

Caspian’s head tilted. His expression softened into something almost tender. “And yet here you stand, little scholar. The veil has answered in ways even you could not predict.” His voice was soft, seductive, each word sliding over her skin like a caress. “I feel it. The mate bond. It sings in my blood.”

Dragard took one heavy step forward. The floorboards creaked beneath his boots. His crimson eyes dragged down her body with open hunger, lingering on the rapid rise and fall of her chest beneath the robes. “Mine,” he growled. The single word vibrated through her bones. “I smelled it the moment the circle opened. This one belongs to me. Every inch of that pretty pale skin is already begging for my claim.”

Eloren’s back hit the curved stone wall. There was nowhere left to run. The twin shadows stretched toward her, not quite touching, yet she felt them everywhere. Invisible fingers of darkness traced the line of her throat. Another set, rougher and hotter, slid along the inside of her thigh beneath her robes without disturbing the fabric. Her breath hitched sharply.

Terror flooded her mind. She had summoned princes. Two of them. Ancient rivals, according to every legend. The binding she had prepared for a minor lord had somehow locked onto both of them and onto her at the same time. She could feel the threads sinking deeper, coiling around her spine, her heart, the hidden places between her legs that were suddenly, shamefully warm.

Yet beneath the terror something else stirred. A spark. A dark little flame that licked up her belly and made her nipples tighten against the linen of her underdress. The sensation was nothing like the clinical descriptions in her research scrolls. This was liquid heat, a slow pulse that matched the rhythm of the two princes’ breathing. She pressed her thighs together instinctively, but that only made the feeling worse.

Caspian moved closer. He did not touch her with his physical form, but the shadow that trailed behind him did. It brushed her cheek like cool silk. “Do not fear what you have wrought, Eloren Valmar. I have waited centuries for the one who would complete me. Your blood called to us both. That should not be possible, yet I feel the truth of it in every thread of this bond.”

Dragard’s laugh was low and filthy. “Speak your pretty poetry later, brother. I want to hear her moan first.” He inhaled deeply, nostrils flaring. “You can already smell her cunt waking up, can’t you? That sweet, reluctant slick. She hates how much she wants this.”

Eloren’s cheeks burned. She wanted to deny it. She wanted to scream that they were wrong, that she felt nothing but horror at her mistake. But her body was betraying her with every passing second. The supernatural lust threading through the bond made her clit throb in time with her heartbeat. She could feel phantom strokes along her folds, teasing, testing, learning exactly how sensitive she was. Her knees trembled.

“Stop,” she managed, though the word came out breathy instead of commanding. “I did not call for mates. I called for knowledge. For a consort I could control. This is not what I intended.”

Caspian’s silver eyes darkened with sympathy even as his shadow continued its gentle exploration, circling her left nipple until it ached. “Intention is a fragile thing when fate decides otherwise. You are the fated mate, Eloren. To both of us. The bond has already begun to set. Can you not feel the way our shadows reach for your light?”

She could. Gods, she could feel everything. The cool, poetic pull of Caspian’s power sliding against her mind like a lover’s whisper. The raw, dominant force of Dragard’s energy wrapping around her hips, squeezing, promising that he would take everything she tried to withhold. The combination was overwhelming. Terror and arousal twisted together so tightly she could not tell where one ended and the other began.

Her violet eyes darted between them. Caspian stood graceful and luminous, his flowing dark robes shimmering with faint starlight. Dragard loomed like a storm given flesh, scars pulsing, muscles coiled as though he might spring at any moment. Both of them watched her with identical expressions of possessive recognition. The twin shadows in the circle had not faded. They remained, coiled at their masters’ feet like loyal hounds waiting for permission to devour her.

Eloren’s breath came faster. The first true thread of the bond snapped into place around her wrist. It did not hurt. Instead it sent a bolt of pure sensation straight to her core. She gasped, hips jerking forward involuntarily. A rush of wetness soaked into her undergarments. The scent of her own arousal bloomed in the tower room, impossible to hide from beings born of shadow and desire.

“There it is,” Dragard said, voice thick with triumph. “That first sweet surrender. You will fight us, little scholar. You will tell yourself you hate every filthy thing we plan to do to that elegant body. But your blood already knows the truth. It knows you were made to take two princes at once.”

Caspian lifted a hand. The gesture was gentle, yet the shadow that accompanied it traced the shell of her ear. “We will not claim you fully tonight. The veil is still too thick, and the binding must settle. But know this, Eloren. Every dream you have from this moment forward will carry my touch. Every time you touch yourself thinking you are alone, Dragard’s hunger will ride you until you scream our names.”

The dual promise sent another wave of forbidden heat through her. Eloren slid down the wall until she sat on the cold stone floor, robes pooling around her hips. Her braid had come partially undone. Strands of black hair clung to her damp forehead. She stared up at the two princes who should not exist in her tower, who should not be looking at her with centuries of pent-up lust and recognition.

“What have I done?” she whispered. The question was meant for herself, but both men answered anyway.

“You have begun what the realms have waited for,” Caspian murmured, his tone soft as velvet. “A bond that will change everything. Do not be afraid of the hunger rising in you. It is only the first taste.”

Dragard’s crimson eyes gleamed with dark amusement. “And when I finally get my hands on you in the flesh, I am going to fuck that scholarly control right out of you. You will beg so prettily, mate. I can already see it.”

The binding threads tightened again. Eloren arched against the sensation, a broken sound escaping her throat. It was not quite a moan. Not yet. But the promise of one lived in that sound, and both princes heard it. Their shadows surged forward, wrapping around her without physical touch, stroking her arms, her throat, the insides of her thighs. They did not breach her clothing, yet she felt them as clearly as if they had stripped her bare.

Her mind spun with panic and unwanted pleasure. She had prepared for power. She had prepared for danger. She had not prepared to become the fated mate of two rival shadow princes whose opposing natures already warred for dominance inside her own body. Caspian’s tenderness made her want to lean in and learn every gentle secret. Dragard’s raw dominance made her want to bare her throat and see how hard he would bite.

The combination was terrifying. It was also making her drip.

The candles began to gutter. The veil was thickening again, pulling the princes back toward their realm. Eloren felt the bond solidify with a final, deep throb that echoed through her cunt like the beat of a second heart. She pressed the heel of her hand between her legs without thinking, trying to ease the ache. Both princes watched the movement with identical predatory focus.

“Until next time, little scholar,” Caspian whispered as his form began to dissolve into silver mist. “Dream of me.”

Dragard’s departure was more violent. His shadow lashed out one last time, delivering a phantom slap directly against her swollen clit that made her cry out. “This is only the beginning. Run if you want. It will just make the chase sweeter when I catch you.”

Then they were gone.

The circle went dark. The candles died. Eloren sat alone in the sudden silence of her tower, chest heaving, thighs trembling, the taste of supernatural lust thick on her tongue. Her palm still stung where she had cut it. The binding marks around her wrists glowed faintly, twin circles of shadow and starlight that would be invisible to mortal eyes but burned against her awareness with every heartbeat.

She pressed her forehead to her knees and let out a shaky breath that was half sob, half moan. The ambitious scholar who had walked into this room seeking controlled power no longer existed. In her place sat a woman who could already feel two ancient hungers stretching across the veil toward her, promising both ruin and ecstasy.

Eloren Valmar closed her eyes. The first threads of her shadow heritage stirred deep in her blood, awakened by the accidental binding. They whispered filthy, tempting things. They told her that terror and arousal could feel exactly the same when the right shadows touched her.

And somewhere in the distance, she heard the faint echo of two male voices, one soft and one rough, speaking the same word at the same moment.

“Ours.”
