Academy Shadows

Selene Dawson moved through the dim light of their academy chambers with practiced grace, her violet eyes fixed on the man seated before her. Philip Keaton sat stripped to the waist on the edge of their oak table, his broad shoulders marked by fresh bruises and shallow cuts from the day's tournament. The scent of sweat and steel lingered on his skin, mixing with the faint herbal tang of the salve she prepared in a small crystal bowl.

"Hold still," she murmured, her fingers tracing the largest gash along his ribs. Magic hummed beneath her touch, a soft blue glow knitting the torn flesh with gentle warmth. Keaton winced but offered a dutiful smile, his brown hair matted from his helm.

"You need not trouble yourself so, my love. The healers at the lists would have sufficed."

Dawson shook her head, porcelain skin catching the flicker of candlelight. "And leave my husband to their rough hands? No. This is my duty as much as yours." She pressed a cloth dampened with enchanted water to another wound, feeling the residue of battle fade under her spell. Yet something else clung to him, a thread she could not immediately name. It whispered against her senses like silk drawn over bare skin, foreign and insistent.

She leaned closer, inhaling. Beneath the familiar musk of her knight there lingered a trace of something sweeter, almost floral but edged with heat. A faint shimmer, invisible to ordinary sight, pulsed along his collarbone. Her brow furrowed. "Keaton, what happened in the final bout? This... this is no ordinary tournament mark."

He shifted, his strong jaw tightening. "A new challenger. She fought with unusual flair. Nothing more."

Dawson's hands stilled. The magical residue responded to her probing, sending a subtle warmth through her fingertips that settled low in her belly. It was not pain. It was invitation. Curiosity flickered alongside the unease already coiling in her chest. She pushed it aside and finished sealing the last cut, her elegant robes brushing his thigh.

Outside their window the academy grounds hummed with evening activity. Students and masters alike passed beneath the arches, voices carrying fragments of gossip. Dawson caught a name on the wind as she stepped to the casement to rinse her hands.

"Ulanna again. That crimson witch bested three knights before the sun set."

"They say she wields spells no academy sanctions. Succubus blood, or so the whispers claim."

Dawson's fingers tightened on the basin. Ulanna. The name tasted sharp on her tongue. She had heard it only in passing before, a rival mage whose tower stood at the academy's edge, cloaked in forbidden rumor. Now the whispers grew louder in her mind. This was the one who had marked her husband.

She returned to Keaton, her voice steady though her thoughts raced. "This Ulanna. You faced her today."

Keaton met her gaze, chivalrous as ever, yet a shadow passed behind his eyes. "She challenged openly. Her magic... it lingers, I admit. But it is done."

Dawson placed her palm flat against his chest, feeling the steady beat of his heart. The strange residue flared once more under her touch, sending a faint pulse of heat through her own veins. Her breath caught. It felt like fingers brushing the inside of her wrist, intimate and commanding. She withdrew her hand quickly, porcelain cheeks warming.

Unease settled deeper. This was no simple tournament victory. Something had passed between her husband and the crimson-haired mage, something that now brushed against Dawson's own latent power. Curiosity stirred in its wake, unwelcome yet insistent. What manner of magic could leave such a signature on a knight so steadfast?

Keaton rose, armor clinking as he reached for his tunic. "The academy will speak of her for days. Pay it no mind, Dawson. My loyalty remains yours."

She nodded, though her violet eyes lingered on the faint shimmer still visible only to her. The first hint of influence had taken root, subtle and slow. In the quiet of their chambers, Selene Dawson felt the stirrings of a change she could neither name nor yet resist.
