The Arrangement

Kat Salem gripped the strap of her messenger bag tighter as she stood before the massive oak door. The house was nothing like the cramped graduate apartments she was used to. Floor-to-ceiling windows reflected the afternoon sun, and the manicured lawn stretched out like something from a magazine. At twenty-five, she had tutored plenty of athletes before, but none of them lived like this. She felt every inch of her petite five-foot-four frame, her soft curves hidden beneath a simple blouse and jeans, and the messy bun of auburn hair that refused to stay neat. Her wire-rimmed glasses slipped down her nose. She pushed them back up, cheeks already warming. This place made her feel small, insignificant, like an imposter who had taken a wrong turn.

She raised her hand and knocked. The sound seemed to vanish against the heavy wood. For a moment she considered turning around. The extra money would help with her own dissertation expenses, but maybe this was a mistake. Coach Reynolds had practically begged her to take the job, promising it would be straightforward. Keep Mike Landin eligible. Nothing more.

The door swung open.

Mike Landin filled the frame. Six-foot-three of pure athletic power, dark skin still gleaming with a light sheen of sweat as if he had just finished a workout. His broad shoulders and carved chest were completely bare, a tribal tattoo curling over one pectoral and down his arm. Low-slung gray sweatpants hung on his narrow hips, revealing the deep V that disappeared beneath the fabric. Close-cropped black hair, intense brown eyes, and a smirk that said he knew exactly what effect he had.

Kat's mouth went dry. Her fair skin betrayed her instantly, a flush creeping up her neck.

"Well, damn," he drawled, leaning one muscular arm against the doorframe. His voice was deep, laced with amusement. "You must be the tutor Coach sent. Didn't expect you to look like this, Professor Salem."

She blinked, forcing her gaze up from the hard ridges of his abs to his face. "It's Kat. And I'm not a professor. I'm a graduate student."

His smirk widened. He stepped aside, waving her in with an exaggerated sweep of his arm. The movement made the muscles in his chest and shoulder flex. Kat tried not to notice. She failed.

"Come on in then, Kat. Mi casa and all that."

She stepped past him into the cool, expansive foyer. Marble floors, modern art on the walls, a staircase that curved up like it belonged in a luxury hotel. The faint scent of his skin, something clean and masculine with a hint of cedar, lingered as she moved by him. He was close enough that she could feel the heat radiating from his bare torso. Her pulse jumped.

"You can put your stuff over there," he said, pointing toward a large open living area that flowed into a dining space. A massive oak table sat near windows overlooking a private pool. "Want something to drink? Water? Beer?"

"Water is fine. This is strictly professional, Mr. Landin. I'm here to help with your literature coursework so you maintain eligibility. Nothing else."

He chuckled, a low sound that vibrated through her. "Mr. Landin? We're doing last names already? It's Mike. And relax, I won't bite. Not unless you ask real nice."

Kat set her bag on the table with more force than necessary. She could feel him watching her as she pulled out her notebook, the contract, and a copy of the syllabus from his English class. When she turned, he was still shirtless, arms crossed over that impressive chest, studying her like she was more interesting than anything on the syllabus.

She cleared her throat. "Before we begin, we need to go over the terms. Coach Reynolds arranged this, but I have a contract that outlines expectations, payment, and schedule. Three sessions per week, two hours each. We focus on your assignments, papers, and exam prep. No exceptions."

Mike walked over, slow and deliberate. Each step made the muscles in his abdomen shift. Kat kept her eyes on the paper. He stopped right beside her, closer than necessary, and looked down at the document. His arm brushed hers as he reached for it. The contact was brief, but it sent a spark straight through her.

"You always this serious?" he asked, voice dropping a notch. He scanned the contract, then picked up a pen from the table. Instead of moving away, he stayed planted next to her, his hip inches from her shoulder. She could see the fine details of the tattoo now, the way it wrapped around his bicep like it was claiming territory.

"I take my work seriously," she replied, keeping her tone even. "And I expect the same from you. This isn't a social call. Your grades are on the line, and so is my reputation as a tutor."

He signed the contract with a quick flourish, then slid it back toward her. As he did, his fingers grazed hers. Lingering. Not an accident. His skin was warm, rough from years of gripping footballs and weights. Kat didn't pull away immediately. Their eyes met. His were a deep, rich brown that seemed to see far too much. She felt pinned by that gaze, her breath catching for just a second before she snatched her hand back.

"There. Signed, sealed, delivered," he said, cocky grin returning. "I'm all yours for the next two hours, Professor."

"Kat," she corrected again, though the way he said Professor sent an unwelcome flutter through her stomach. She organized her notes, trying to regain control. "Let's start with an assessment. Tell me about the last paper you turned in. The one on modernist literature. Coach mentioned you barely passed."

Mike finally dropped into the chair across from her, but he sat sideways, legs spread wide in that arrogant way athletes did. The position drew her eyes downward for a split second before she forced them back up. He noticed. Of course he noticed.

"It was on Hemingway or some shit. I threw together some stuff about the iceberg theory. Got a C minus. Professor said I lacked depth." He shrugged, muscles rolling under dark skin. "I'm more of an action guy than a words guy."

Kat adjusted her glasses. "Literature requires both. The depth comes from understanding subtext, not just surface level events. What did you think the iceberg represented in that story?"

He leaned forward, elbows on the table. The movement brought him closer again, invading her space without technically crossing any line. She caught the scent of him once more. Her fair skin flushed hotter. Damn it.

"The stuff you don't see. The shit under the water." His eyes flicked to her lips, then back to her eyes. "Kinda like you, maybe. All buttoned up and professional on top, but I bet there's more going on underneath."

Kat's breath hitched. She set her pen down firmly. "Mike. Boundaries. That kind of comment is exactly what I mean. I'm your tutor. Not your... whatever else you think I might be. If we're going to work together, you need to focus on the material. Can you do that?"

For a moment he just looked at her, that arrogant charm radiating off him in waves. Then he smiled, slow and dangerous. "I can try. But you're making it hard, showing up here looking all cute and serious with those glasses and that bun. Like a sexy little librarian who needs someone to mess her up."

Her mouth fell open slightly. Heat pooled low in her belly despite herself. She crossed her legs under the table, hating how her body reacted to his crude teasing. This was exactly why she preferred to tutor in the library, not in someone's private mansion where he could answer the door half naked and say things like that.

"That is inappropriate," she said, voice softer than she wanted. "I set the rules. Professional. Respectful. Or this arrangement ends today. I'll tell Coach myself."

Mike held up his hands in mock surrender, but his eyes sparkled with challenge. "Alright, alright. Message received, Professor. I'll behave." He paused, then added with a wicked tilt of his head, "For now."

Kat exhaled slowly, trying to ignore the way her nipples had tightened against her bra. She flipped open her notebook. "Good. Now, let's talk about your upcoming midterm. You've got a paper due on symbolism in 'The Great Gatsby.' Walk me through your thesis."

They spent the next forty minutes dissecting his ideas. Mike was smarter than his cocky attitude suggested. He had insights, but they were scattered, buried under laziness and overconfidence. Every time she leaned forward to point something out on the page, he mirrored her, bringing their heads closer. Once, when she reached for a different text, his knee brushed hers under the table and stayed there. Solid. Warm. Deliberate.

She didn't move her leg away immediately. The contact sent little currents up her thigh. When she finally did shift, his smirk told her he knew exactly what he was doing.

"You're testing me already," she murmured during a lull, not quite meeting his eyes.

"Can't help it," he replied, voice low and rough. "Something about you, Kat. The way you get all flushed when I look at you too long. Makes me curious how far that blush goes."

She looked up sharply. His expression had shifted, still arrogant but now mixed with something hotter, more focused. The air between them felt thick. She could see the definition of his collarbones, the way his chest rose and fell with each breath. Her mind supplied unhelpful images of what it might feel like to press her palms against that dark, smooth skin.

"This is not going to work if you keep doing that," she said, but her voice lacked the firmness she needed. It came out almost breathless.

"Doing what? Talking?" He leaned back, but the distance didn't ease the tension. "Or noticing how pretty your mouth gets when you're trying to scold me?"

Kat stood up abruptly, needing space. She walked to the window, staring out at the pool without really seeing it. Her heart hammered. This was ridiculous. She had been hired to do a job. Mike Landin was an entitled football star who probably charmed his way through life. She could not, would not, let herself be affected.

Behind her, she heard his chair scrape. Then his footsteps. He didn't touch her, but he stopped close enough that she could feel him there. The heat of his bare chest nearly against her back.

"I'm not trying to make you uncomfortable," he said, and for the first time his voice held a note of something almost sincere beneath the cockiness. "But I'm not gonna pretend I don't see you, Kat. You're smart. Hot. Different from the usual girls around here. That combination is dangerous."

She turned to face him. He was right there. Towering. Shirtless. Looking down at her with those intense eyes. Her gaze dropped to his mouth, full and sculpted, then back up. The first real lingering eye contact stretched between them. Neither looked away. The moment felt electric, heavy with everything they weren't saying.

"Dangerous for your eligibility," she whispered. "I control whether you stay on the team or not, Mike. Remember that."

His lips curved. "Yes, Professor. I remember. But I also remember that you haven't told me to back up yet."

She hadn't. Her body seemed locked in place, hyperaware of every inch between them. The soft curves of her breasts were mere inches from brushing his bare torso. She could see the faint sheen of sweat still on his skin, the way his tattoos shifted when he breathed. Arrogant charm rolled off him like cologne.

Finally she stepped sideways, breaking the spell. "We still have an hour. Sit down. We're going to outline that paper properly. And put on a shirt, for God's sake."

Mike laughed, a genuine sound this time. "There she is. Bossy. I like it." He didn't move to find a shirt though. Instead he returned to his chair, sprawling again. "But I'll keep the shirt off. It's my house. My rules too, remember?"

Kat sat back down, knees pressed tightly together. She could still feel the ghost of his proximity on her skin. Her professional boundaries were already being tested, and they had only just signed the contract. This was going to be a problem.

They returned to the literature. She guided him through structuring an argument, her voice steadier now. But every time he got something right and flashed that triumphant grin, or when he stretched and his muscles flexed under the lights, the sparks returned. Attraction crackled in the quiet spaces between their words.

At one point he reached across her for a highlighter. His arm pressed against her shoulder, solid and warm. She froze. He took his time capping the highlighter, his face close enough that she could see the faint stubble along his jaw.

"You're good at this," he said quietly, not moving away. "Explaining shit. Making it make sense. Most tutors talk at me. You talk with me."

Kat swallowed. "That's my job."

"Yeah. But you do it well." His eyes dropped to her mouth again. "Real well."

She pulled the highlighter from his fingers, breaking the contact. "Focus, Mike. The green light. What does it symbolize?"

He answered correctly, but his foot hooked around the leg of her chair and tugged it a fraction closer. Testing again. Always testing.

By the end of the two hours, Kat's notebook was filled with solid progress. Mike had a working outline and seemed to actually understand the material for once. But her body was a live wire. Every lingering look, every casual brush of skin, every cocky comment had wound her tighter.

She packed her bag slowly, aware of him watching her from across the table. He still hadn't put on a shirt.

"Same time in two days?" he asked, standing up. The movement revealed every ridge and valley of his athletic build. Kat forced her eyes to her bag.

"Yes. And I expect you to have read the next two chapters. Fully read them, not skimmed."

"Bossy again. I think I'm gonna like these sessions, Professor Salem."

She zipped her bag and met his gaze one last time. The arrogant charm was there, but so was something deeper. Possessiveness maybe. Interest that went beyond the game.

"Professional," she reminded him, though the word felt weaker now. "Keep it professional, Mike."

He walked her to the door, staying close the entire way. When she stepped outside, the cool air felt like a shock against her overheated skin. She turned to say goodbye and found him leaning in the doorway again, one hand on the frame, the other loose at his side.

"Drive safe," he said. Then, softer, "I meant what I said earlier. There's more under the surface with you. I'm gonna enjoy finding out what it is."

Kat didn't answer. She walked to her car on unsteady legs, feeling his eyes on her the entire way. When she finally pulled out of the driveway, her hands were shaking on the wheel.

The arrangement was signed. The boundaries had been set.

And Mike Landin had already started testing every single one of them.
