First Lesson First Correction
Isaac Underwood stood at the wrought-iron gate of the estate and checked the address on his phone for the third time. The place looked nothing like the cramped rehearsal rooms he had grown used to. Tall hedges blocked the street. A gravel drive curved toward a stone house that sat half-hidden behind old trees. He swallowed hard and pressed the buzzer.
The gate clicked open without a word. He walked up the drive, shoulders hunched against the cool air, his audition clothes still stiff from the last failed round. His palms felt damp. Twenty-four years old and already scraping by on canceled gigs and borrowed rent money, he needed this to work. Violet Keaton did not take many private students. The ones who made it through her training got real work.
The front door opened before he reached it. Violet stood framed in the doorway, silver streaking the dark hair she had pinned back. She wore a tailored blouse tucked into a narrow pencil skirt. Her posture was perfect, the kind that made every movement look deliberate.
"Isaac," she said. Her voice was low and even. "Come in."
He stepped inside. The foyer smelled of polished wood and faint lavender. She closed the door behind him and studied him for a long moment without speaking. He shifted his weight, aware of how his cheap button-down hung loose at the waist.
"Leave your bag there," she said, pointing to a bench. "We'll begin in the studio."
The studio occupied the back of the house, tall windows letting in filtered light across a grand piano and a wide wooden floor. Mirrors lined one wall. Violet walked to the center of the room and turned to face him.
"Stand here," she said, indicating a spot marked by a small tape X. "Feet shoulder-width. Hands at your sides."
Isaac moved into place. His heart beat too fast. He tried to remember the posture exercises from his last teacher, but Violet was already circling him.
"Your shoulders are forward," she said. She placed two fingers between his shoulder blades and pressed. "Lift here. No, do not arch your lower back. Think of a string running from the crown of your head to the ceiling."
Her touch was light but certain. She adjusted his chin with the edge of her hand, then stepped back to look at him again.
"Breathe in," she said. "Slow. Through the nose."
He obeyed. The air felt thin in his chest.
"Again. This time let the ribs expand sideways. I will check."
She moved behind him and rested both palms along his lower ribs. Her hands were warm through the fabric of his shirt. He tried to focus on the breath, but the contact made his skin prickle. He inhaled again, slower this time.
"Better," she said. "Now exhale on a hiss. Keep the ribs expanded as long as you can."
He did as she asked. The hiss wavered after only a few seconds.
"Again," she said. Her hands stayed in place. "You are collapsing too soon. Support from the base of the ribs, not the throat."
Isaac tried once more. This time the sound lasted longer, but his face grew hot. He could feel the shape of her fingers against his sides, the steady pressure that did not move even when he finished the exhale.
Violet stepped around to face him. Her eyes were dark and level.
"Look at me," she said.
He lifted his gaze. The directness of it caught him off guard. She did not smile or soften the stare. She simply held it until he felt the urge to look away and forced himself not to.
"Good," she said at last. "Most students glance aside when they feel exposed. You stayed. That matters."
She walked to the piano and opened a slim notebook.
"Your audition tape showed promise in the upper range but no control below the staff. That changes here. You will practice here three times a week. Between sessions you will follow a written regimen I give you. No shortcuts. No excuses about other work. If you cannot commit to that, tell me now."
Isaac's mouth felt dry. "I can commit."
"We will see." She closed the notebook. "Turn around. Face the mirror."
He turned. She came up behind him again and placed her hands on his hips, guiding them back half an inch.
"Weight even on both feet. Do not lock your knees. When you sing, the body must remain open, never braced. Tension here," she pressed lightly at his hip, "travels straight to the larynx. I will not tolerate it."
Her hands lingered a moment longer than necessary. Isaac felt a low, unexpected warmth gather in his stomach. He told himself it was only nerves. The correction was clinical. Nothing more.
Violet moved to stand beside him so their eyes met in the mirror.
"From this point forward you will call me Coach Keaton during lessons. Outside the studio, Mistress Violet. We begin that distinction today."
He blinked. The words landed with quiet weight. He nodded once.
"Say it," she said.
"Coach Keaton," he answered. His voice came out steadier than he expected.
"Again."
"Coach Keaton."
She gave a single approving nod. "Better. Now, the first rule of practice. You will not touch yourself without permission. Not for relief, not for distraction, not even to check progress. Any urge you feel during breath work or posture drills belongs to the lesson, not to you. Do you understand?"
Heat crept up his neck. He had not expected that sentence so soon. He swallowed and managed, "Yes, Coach Keaton."
"Good." She returned to the piano bench and sat. "We will run a simple five-note scale. On the exhale only. Keep the posture we established. I will watch."
Isaac faced the mirror once more. He set his feet, lifted his ribs, and began the scale. The first note wobbled. The second held longer. By the third he felt her gaze on him like another set of hands. Every small adjustment she had made with her fingers now lived in his body, and he found himself wanting to hold it exactly as she had placed it.
When the scale ended, silence filled the room. Violet did not speak right away. She simply watched him in the mirror, and for the first time since he arrived Isaac felt the faint, undeniable pull of wanting to please her. It sat low in his chest, warm and unsettling, and he did not yet know what to do with it.
"Again," she said softly. "This time without the waver on the ascent."
He drew breath and obeyed.
