The Third Voice in Our Bed

Kristen wakes in the deep middle of the night to a voice that isn't hers.

It comes from the left side of the bed, thin and tinny, the sound of something escaping a speaker meant for one ear only. Brian sleeps with an earbud in now, has for eleven months, and Kristen has gotten used to the little red charging light on his nightstand the way you get used to a smoke detector's blink. Background. Furniture. But tonight the volume has slipped up, or the house has gone quieter, or something in her chest has gone sharper, because the words are suddenly legible.

"...that's it. Just breathe with me. You're doing so well."

Kristen lies still. The ceiling fan turns above them, pushing around the same desert-warm air it has pushed around for fifteen years of marriage, and she listens to another woman tell her husband he's doing well.

She knows the voice. Of course she does. She found the files herself, one year ago, buried in a folder on his laptop labeled with a name she didn't recognize: Amelia. Free downloads, the kind of audio hypnosis content that fills the internet's quiet corners, a woman in Sacramento with a warm, unhurried voice and a subscriber count that Kristen checked twice because she couldn't believe it the first time. Kristen had scrolled through the comments that first night. Men saying you changed my life. Men saying I listen every night. Brian's username was not among them, but she hadn't needed it to be. She'd known. The way he'd started sleeping deeper. The way he'd stopped reaching for her in the dark, not out of coldness but out of some new, private fullness she couldn't name.

She should have been furious. She had planned to be furious. She'd had the whole argument drafted in her head while loading the dishwasher, while counting pills at the pharmacy, while driving home down Grant Road with the windows down. You're spending your nights with a stranger's voice and you didn't tell me. But when the moment came, standing in the garage while he wiped down his van, what came out instead was: "Is it good? The Amelia stuff?"

And Brian had gone red to his ears and said, "I can stop," and Kristen had heard herself say, "I didn't ask you to stop."

So now it's somewhere past three and she is lying on her side of a bed she has shared for over a decade, listening.

"Let your shoulders drop," the voice says. Amelia. Amelia Dean, Kristen has learned, from a bio page that reads like it was written by someone who actually thinks about what she's doing. "There you go. That's it."

Brian exhales. Kristen hears it happen, the long, unspooling release of a man who carries tension in his body the way she carries it in her lists. He exhales and his whole frame changes beside her, the mattress shifting, his arm going slack against the sheet.

Something hot moves through her chest. She catalogues it the way she catalogues everything, because cataloguing is what she does instead of feeling things at full volume. Jealousy, she labels it. Then, a half second later, standing very still inside herself: no, that's not all of it.

Because Brian's breathing has changed. Slower. Deeper. And there is a quality to it she recognizes, a heaviness she has only heard in one other context, and that context is her hand on him, her mouth on him, the low dark hours when he lets go for her and only her. He is making that sound for a voice on a ten-dollar earbud.

Kristen's face burns. Her pulse ticks up into her throat.

"Good," Amelia murmurs, and the word lands in the dark between their two bodies like a coin dropped into still water. "You don't have to do anything. You just have to listen. Can you do that for me?"

Brian makes a sound. Not a word. A soft, yielding hum, the sound of a man agreeing to something his conscious mind isn't invited to. Kristen has been married to him for fifteen years and she has never heard him make that sound. It goes through her like a wire through soft metal, and she discovers, with something like horror and something like wonder, that her body has responded before her mind has finished deciding how to feel. Warmth pooling low. Her nipples tightening against the cotton of her sleep shirt.

You're turned on by this, she thinks. Your husband is hypnotizing himself with another woman's voice and you're turned on.

She turns the thought over. Examines it from all sides, the way she'd examine a prescription with an unfamiliar label. It doesn't feel like betrayal. That's the strange part. It feels like watching someone she loves unlock a door she didn't know he had, and the key isn't hers, and that fact should hurt, and instead it makes her wet.

"That's right," Amelia says. "Just like that. You're safe. You're exactly where you're supposed to be."

Kristen's hand has moved without her permission. It rests low on her own stomach, over the shirt, not doing anything, just being there, a pressure she needs. She watches Brian's face in the fan's strobing shadow. His mouth is slack. His eyelids move in slow, deep rhythms. He looks the way he looks in the last minutes before sleep, except more so, like someone has turned a dimmer switch on a man who was already at half light.

She could reach over. She knows she could reach over right now, slide her hand under the waistband of his shorts, and he would come up out of the trance confused and wanting her, and the balance of the night would tip back to where she understands it. The thought is tempting. It's also, she realizes, a kind of theft. Taking him back mid-surrender would be taking, and what Amelia's voice is doing in this bed is something else. Something Kristen doesn't have a word for yet.

"In a moment," Amelia says, "I'm going to count down from five, and with every number you'll sink deeper. Five."

Brian's chest rises and falls.

"Four."

Kristen presses her palm flat against her stomach and breathes with him, because she can't help it, because the count is working on her too and she isn't even the one with the earbud.

"Three. Deeper now."

This is ridiculous, she thinks. I'm in my own bed, jealous of a countdown.

"Two."

But he's so beautiful like this. That's the thought that undoes her, the one she can't file away. Brian, slack and open and trusting, giving himself over to a voice in the dark, and Kristen realizing that in fifteen years she has never once seen him this undone. Not with her. Not with anyone. There is a whole room inside her husband that she has never been in, and another woman has the key, and instead of rage Kristen feels something closer to hunger.

"One," Amelia says. "All the way down. There you are."

Silence, then. The file must be ending, or entering its long quiet stretch, because the voice stops and there is only the fan and Brian's slow breathing and Kristen's own pulse loud in her ears.

She lies there for a long time. The red light on the nightstand blinks. The heat between her legs doesn't fade; it settles in, patient, like something that plans to stay.

Here is what she knows, staring at the ceiling in the small hours: she is not going to take this away from him. And here is what she knows a breath later, which is a different and more dangerous kind of knowing: she doesn't want to be left outside the room.

She wants in.

Not to stop it. To shape it. The thought arrives fully formed, the way her best thoughts always do, somewhere between the organized part of her mind and the part she keeps locked. If there has to be a third voice in this bed, then I want to know exactly what it says. Every word. Before it says them.

She turns her head. Brian sleeps on, deep and far away, his mouth soft, the little earbud glowing faintly in his ear. She could almost laugh. She was a pharmacy tech for fifteen years; she knows exactly what happens when you take someone else's prescription without understanding the dose.

Tomorrow, she decides, she's going to find out everything. The files. The woman behind the voice. What Brian hears when he goes under, and what it costs him, and what it gives back.

And then, when she understands it, when she knows it down to the syllable, she is going to write some words of her own.

Kristen closes her eyes. Her hand is still on her stomach, and she lets it drift lower, just once, just for herself, in the dark, while another woman's voice echoes faint and spent in her husband's ear.

Her fingers find the waistband of her underwear and slip beneath it, and the first touch is almost unbearable. She's wetter than she realized, slick and swollen, and the contact sends a shudder through her that she has to bite her lip to keep silent. Brian is right there, an arm's length away, lost in someone else's voice, and the wrongness of that, the intimacy of it, the way he's surrendering without her, pushes her arousal into something sharp and urgent.

She keeps her breathing steady. She matches it to his, the slow rhythm Amelia left in him, and that feels like borrowing something, like wearing another woman's perfume, and the thought makes her press her fingers harder against herself. She circles the way she likes, the way she's liked for years, but tonight every stroke carries a charge it's never had before. She's not thinking about Brian's hands on her. She's thinking about his face going slack. About the sound he made when Amelia asked him to listen. About the door she didn't know he had.

The orgasm builds slowly, which is unusual for her, and it keeps building, layering tight and tighter, and she holds herself on the edge because she doesn't want it to end, because ending means coming back to a bed where she's the only one awake and the only one who knows what she just felt. But her body won't wait forever. Her hips shift once against her hand, a small involuntary roll, and that's enough. She comes with her eyes closed and her teeth sunk into her lower lip, silent, shaking, the fan turning above her, the red light blinking, Brian breathing deep beside her, and the release is so sharp and so private that it feels less like pleasure and more like a door cracking open inside her own chest.

She lies still afterward. Her hand stays where it is, cupping the warm, softened ache of herself, and the tears come without warning, not from sadness but from the sheer strangeness of the night, the way it has rearranged something fundamental inside her without asking permission.

Jealousy, she thinks, drifting off. What a waste of a perfectly good fire.
