Poisoned Negotiation

The road to the water tower compound was a dead man's walk. Casta knew it the moment the rusted gates came into view, hulking against the gray sky like a ribcage left to bleach in the sun. Her settlement had sent four of them. Three negotiators and one medic. Her. The last clean water reserves they had were sloshing in the tank strapped to the back of the truck, enough to maybe buy them a week of goodwill. Maybe.

She adjusted the strap of her medical bag, felt the weight of supplies she'd fought to keep. Bandages and antiseptic, plus a single vial of morphine she'd hidden in the lining. "Keep your hands visible at all times," the lead negotiator, a man named Ellis, muttered to her for the third time. "Don't touch anything. Don't look at anyone too long."

"I know the drill," Casta said. Her voice came out steadier than she felt.

The gates groaned open. A man in layered tactical gear stepped out, rifle slung across his chest. He had a shaved head and a scar that split his eyebrow. Behind him, two more fighters flanked the entrance, their eyes scanning the delegation like they were inventorying meat.

"State your business," the scarred man said.

Ellis stepped forward. "We're here to negotiate. Water for safe passage and supply rights."

The scarred man's mouth twitched. He gestured with his chin. "Bring the tank. The rest of you stay."

They were led inside. The compound was a maze of converted shipping containers and scaffolding, all built around the central water tower. The tower itself rose fifty feet, its legs bolted into concrete. Casta saw movement at the top. Lookouts. She counted three before they passed under a walkway and lost sight.

The negotiation room was a repurposed cargo container with a table and two chairs. A man sat waiting. Older, with a shaved head and cold blue eyes. The warlord, she guessed. Rourke. Beside him stood another man, younger, with cropped dark hair and a neatly trimmed beard. Gray eyes that moved slow and deliberate. He watched her the way she watched a wound before deciding how to treat it.

The talk started tense. Ellis laid out their offer. The tank contained their last clean water. In exchange, they needed access to the trade routes that ran past the compound's territory. Rourke listened, his face unreadable. The gray-eyed man, Dirken, she would learn later, said nothing. He just watched.

Then everything went wrong.

It happened fast. A shout from outside. The sound of boots on metal. Ellis reached for his belt, but the scarred man was faster. He had a knife to Ellis's throat before Casta could draw breath. "Don't," the scarred man said. "Don't any of you move."

Casta's hands went up. Her medical bag slipped from her shoulder, hit the floor with a soft thud. She heard the other negotiators being shoved against the wall, their wrists bound with zip ties. Then the gray-eyed man was in front of her. Dirken. He looked at her with that slow, assessing gaze.

"You're the medic," he said. Not a question.

She nodded.

"Good." He turned to Rourke. "I'll take her."

Rourke gave a curt nod. "Process her. Standard."

Dirken took her arm. His grip was firm but not rough. He led her out of the container, through a maze of corridors, past fighters who looked at her with flat curiosity. They descended a set of metal stairs, the air growing cooler and damper. The sounds of the compound faded, replaced by the drip of water and the hum of machinery.

They reached a door. Dirken keyed in a code. The door swung open into a room that was almost clinical. White tiles. A metal table bolted to the floor. Shelves of supplies. A drain in the center of the concrete floor.

"Strip," he said.

Casta's heart hammered. She kept her voice level. "I'm a medic. I can be useful to you."

"I know." Dirken leaned against the wall, arms crossed. "That's why you're here. Strip."

She hesitated. Her hands went to the buttons of her jacket. She forced herself to move slowly, methodically, the way she would approach a difficult procedure. The jacket fell to the floor. Then her shirt. She unhooked her pants and stepped out of them. Finally, she reached behind her back and unclasped her bra, let it fall. Her underwear followed.

She stood naked in the cold room, her arms at her sides, her eyes fixed on a point on the wall behind Dirken. She could feel his gaze on her skin, tracing the lines of her body, cataloging every scar and curve. The cold air prickled across her bare flesh, raising goosebumps along her arms and down her stomach. Her nipples tightened in the chill, and she fought the urge to cover herself.

"Turn around," he said.

She turned. Faced the wall. Heard him step closer. His hands were cool as they touched her shoulders, guided her arms up. He inspected her hands, her fingers, checking for calluses, for track marks. Then he moved lower, his palms flat against her back, tracing her spine down to the small of her back. She shivered.

"You've had children," he said.

"No." The word came out tight. "I haven't."

His hands paused on her hips. "Then these stretch marks are from weight fluctuation. Malnutrition, probably. Your settlement doesn't feed its people well."

She said nothing. His hands continued their survey, moving to her stomach, pressing gently against the muscle there. Then lower, to her hips, her thighs. He knelt, his fingers tracing the backs of her knees, her calves. He was thorough. Clinical. But there was something else in the way his thumbs pressed into the soft flesh of her inner thighs.

"Spread your legs," he said.

She did. Wider than necessary, she thought, but she wouldn't give him the satisfaction of hesitation. Her breath caught as his hands moved up her thighs, parting her. She felt his breath on her skin, warm against the cold air. His fingers found the inside of her thighs, pressed, tested the muscle tone there. His thumbs traced the crease where her legs met her body, so close to the apex that she tensed involuntarily.

He paused. She could feel him looking at her, the heat of his gaze on the most intimate part of her. Then his fingers moved higher, brushing through the curls between her legs, parting them. She bit her lip, her hands balling into fists at her sides. He stroked along the outer folds, his touch clinical but unhurried, and she felt her body respond despite herself. A flush of warmth bloomed between her legs, and she hated it.

"Wider," he said.

She spread herself further, feeling the cool air against her exposed flesh. His fingers slid between her folds, testing, probing. One finger entered her, slow and deliberate, and she gasped despite herself. He held it there, feeling the walls of her clench around him. Then he withdrew, his finger glistening in the dim light.

"Responsive," he said, his voice low. "That's good."

He stood. She heard the rustle of his clothing, felt the absence of his hands like a sudden chill.

"Turn around again."

She turned. He was close now, close enough that she could smell the soap on his skin, the faint tang of gun oil. His gray eyes met hers. "Open your mouth."

She hesitated. Then she did.

He inserted two fingers, pressed down on her tongue, felt along her gums, her teeth. She gagged slightly but held still. He withdrew, wiped his fingers on his pants.

"Good teeth," he said. "That's rare."

He stepped back, circled her. His hand came to rest on her shoulder, then slid down her arm, over her breast. He cupped it, weighed it in his palm, his thumb brushing over her nipple. She felt it harden despite herself, a betrayal of her body. He noticed. His mouth curved slightly. His thumb circled the tightened peak, pressing, rolling it between his finger and thumb until she felt a jolt of sensation shoot down to her core. She kept her face blank, but her breath quickened.

"Sensitive," he murmured. He moved to the other breast, treating it with the same clinical attention. His palm grazed over the nipple, and she felt it tighten as well. He pinched gently, watching her face for a reaction. She gave him nothing, but her body gave him everything. She could feel the heat building between her legs again, the wetness that had started when his fingers were inside her.

His hand slid down her stomach, over the soft curve below her navel, to the junction of her thighs. His fingers found her again, sliding through the wetness there. He made a low sound of approval.

"You're wet," he said. Not an accusation. An observation.

She said nothing. Her jaw tightened.

His finger slipped inside her again, and this time he added a second. She was fuller now, stretched around him. He moved them slowly, feeling her walls clench and release. His thumb found the swollen bud at the top of her sex, pressed against it. A moan escaped her before she could stop it.

"That's it," he said. His voice was quieter now, almost gentle. "Don't fight it."

She wanted to fight it. She wanted to shove him away, grab her clothes, run. But her body was betraying her, responding to his touch with a heat that she couldn't control. His fingers moved inside her, curling, pressing against the sensitive spot deep within. His thumb circled her clit, slow and deliberate. She could feel herself tightening around him, feel the tension building in her core.

He watched her face as he worked her. His gray eyes were intent, focused, as if he were studying her reactions the way she studied a wound. She bit her lip, tried to hold back, but a second moan slipped out. Her hips tilted forward, seeking more of his touch despite herself.

"You'll do," he said. "Get dressed."

He withdrew his fingers, leaving her empty and aching. She heard him wipe his hand on his pants again. She stood there for a moment, trembling, her body still thrumming with unfulfilled need. Then she reached for her clothes.

He shook her head. "Not those. You won't need them where you're going."

He handed her a thin shift, gray and threadbare. She pulled it over her head. It fell to mid-thigh, left her arms bare. The fabric was rough against her sensitive skin, chafing her nipples. She could feel her own wetness on her thighs, cooling in the cold air.

He opened the door and gestured for her to follow.

They walked deeper into the lower levels. The air grew heavier, thick with the smell of bodies and damp concrete. She heard sounds. Moons. The rhythmic creak of metal. She didn't ask. She kept her eyes forward, her mind cataloging every turn, every door, every guard they passed.

Dirken stopped at a heavy door. "This is your new home," he said. "You'll be assigned to the cistern pits. You'll serve there until you're called for medical duty. Don't mistake this for kindness. You're an asset. Nothing more."

He pushed open the door. Inside, the room was dimly lit, lined with cots. Women looked up as she entered. Some were naked. Others wore shifts like hers. Their eyes were hollow, defiant, or simply empty. One of them, a young woman with light brown hair and wide green eyes, stood and approached.

"You're the new one," she said. Her voice was soft, almost a whisper. "I'm Mira. You'll want to take the cot in the corner. It's farthest from the drain."

Casta looked at her. At the other women. At the door that had just closed behind her. She felt the weight of the shift on her skin, the memory of Dirken's hands still lingering on her body, the ache between her legs that he had left unfulfilled.

She had been a medic. She had been a negotiator. Now she was something else entirely.

The door locked with a heavy click.

The door locked with a heavy click.

Levels of the Tower

The concrete stairs spiraled downward, each step colder than the last. Casta counted them, not because she needed to know, but because counting kept her mind from fracturing. Twenty-seven steps from the processing room. Fifteen more to the first landing. The guard behind her breathed slow and even, a metronome of indifference.

She focused on the walls, rough and damp with mineral residue. The air changed as they descended, grew thick with moisture and something else. Something organic. Living. The smell of bodies packed close together, of water that had stood too long in confined spaces. Her settlement had its own odors, sweat and soil and woodsmoke, but this was different. This was the smell of people kept like animals.

Which she supposed she was now.

The guard stopped her at a heavy door, rusted hinges groaning as he pushed it open. Inside, the space opened up, a vast underground chamber that must have been the tower's original reservoir. Concrete pillars rose at intervals, supporting a low ceiling. Pipes ran along the walls, some still dripping. But the cistern itself had been drained, refitted with cots and mattresses and chains bolted into the floor.

Women looked up as she entered. Some were naked, others wore thin shifts. All of them bore marks. Bruises. Bite marks. The hollowed look of those who had stopped fighting.

Casta swallowed hard.

"New one," the guard announced, and the women's eyes tracked her with something between pity and appraisal. "Doc from the settlement. She's valuable, so don't damage her. But she's still a breeder."

A woman near the back, young with wavy brown hair and wide green eyes, stepped forward. "I'll show her."

The guard grunted and left, the door slamming behind him.

Casta stood in the center of the cistern pit, surrounded by strangers who knew this world far better than she did. The young woman approached carefully, like one might approach a wounded animal.

"I'm Mira," she said. "You're the one they grabbed from the negotiation."

Casta nodded, her voice caught somewhere in her chest.

"I saw you come in," Mira continued. "You're different from the rest of us. You have skills."

"I'm a medic." The words came out rough, scraped raw. "Was. I was a medic."

"Still are." Mira's voice dropped to a whisper. "That's why you're down here instead of in the pits already. They're figuring out how to use you without breaking you."

Casta looked around the cistern, at the women stretched out on thin mattresses, at the chains that bound some to the floor. "This is the breeding level."

"Level three," Mira confirmed. "Fighters live on level two. Command on level one. Warlord Rourke has the top. This is the bottom, where we stay."

"How many levels?"

"Five total. But four and five are storage and water processing. No one goes down there except maintenance crews. We stay here, between uses."

Casta mapped it in her mind. Fighters above. Breeders below. Warlord at the apex. A rigid vertical hierarchy that mirrored the tower's structure. Power flowed downward, and she was at the bottom.

"When do they come for us?" she asked.

Mira's expression flickered. "Depends on the rotation. Usually twice a day, sometimes more if there's a fight or celebration. They keep a schedule."

"A schedule."

"Morning and evening. Like meals." Mira's laugh was hollow. "We're just another resource to them. Water, food, women. All managed the same way."

Casta's stomach turned. She had treated patients with dignity, had held hands and offered comfort. Now she was inventory, her body a tool for the tower's growth.

"When's the next rotation?"

Mira checked a mark on the wall, faded scratches that Casta hadn't noticed. "An hour. You'll go with the group to level two. They'll assign you a station."

"A station."

"Where you'll be used. Some stations are private rooms for fighters who want one-on-one. Others are open bays for group sessions. You'll start in the group bay."

Casta felt the world tilt. Group sessions. They were going to use her with others watching, others participating.

"Everyone starts there," Mira said softly. "It's how they break you in. How they show you what you are now."

Casta's hand went to her throat, where the collar sat warm against her skin. It had been fitted in processing, a strip of metal that marked her as property. She could feel the weight of it, the way it pressed against her pulse.

"Does it get easier?" she heard herself ask.

Mira's eyes betrayed her. "No. But you get stronger. Or you don't."

The hour passed in a haze of whispered conversations and sideways glances. Casta learned the names of the women around her, learned which ones had been here months and which were new like her. She learned that the fighters came from the warlord's personal guard, that they were rewarded with access to the pits for loyalty and service.

She learned that resistance meant punishment, that refusal meant pain, that survival meant compliance.

When the guard returned, the women rose as one. Casta followed their lead, standing, filing toward the door. The guard counted them, ten in all, and led them up the stairs.

The ascent was different from the descent. The stairs were wider here, better lit. Torches flickered in sconces, casting dancing shadows on the walls. They passed a landing where fighters lounged, their eyes tracking the women with casual hunger.

Casta kept her gaze forward, but she saw them. Saw the way they sat back, legs spread, watching. Saw the hierarchy written in their posture. These were the enforcers, the ones who kept order. Above them, somewhere higher, were the officers. And above them, the warlord himself.

The tower was a pyramid, and she was at the bottom.

The group bay was a long room with cots arranged in rows. Some were bolted to the floor, others were mobile. The lighting was harsh, electric bulbs that hummed and flickered. Fighters stood along the walls, waiting.

Casta's heart hammered as she was directed to a cot near the center. The other women dispersed, each to their station. Mira was two cots away, her face blank.

"First time?" a fighter asked, stepping close to Casta. He was young, maybe late twenties, with a scar across his jaw and cold eyes.

She nodded.

"Don't worry. We'll be gentle." He didn't mean it. She could see it in the way his companions laughed, the way they spread out, claiming their choices.

The scarred fighter pushed her shoulders down onto the cot. His hands were rough, calloused from weapons and violence. He tugged at the thin shift she'd been given, pulling it over her head with the efficiency of someone unwrapping something disposable. The air hit her bare skin, cool against her breasts, her stomach, the insides of her thighs. She lay exposed under the humming lights while he unbuckled his belt.

"Spread your legs," he said. Not a request. An instruction.

Casta obeyed. The concrete ceiling stared back at her, cracks running through it like rivers on a map. She traced them with her eyes as his weight settled between her thighs. His cock pressed against her entrance, already hard, and he didn't bother with preparation. He pushed inside her in one long thrust that tore a gasp from her throat.

She was dry. He didn't care. His hips snapped forward, setting a pace that served his needs alone. The cot creaked beneath them, a rhythmic protest that matched his rhythm. She could feel every inch of him, the friction burning, her body slowly producing moisture in reluctant response to the intrusion. He grunted with each thrust, his breath hot and sour against her neck.

"Not bad," he muttered, gripping her hip with one hand while the other braced against the cot. His fingers dug into her flesh hard enough to bruise. "Tight. They usually loosen you up after the first week."

Casta said nothing. She watched the cracks in the ceiling. One looked like a river delta, branching and rebranching into smaller channels. She followed the main line as far as she could until it disappeared into shadow.

The fighter finished with a groan, spending himself inside her. He pulled out and wiped himself on her shift, already looking toward the next woman. Casta lay still for a moment, feeling his seed trickle down her thigh. Her body ached. The burning between her legs would get worse before it got better.

But there was no time to recover.

The next fighter was older, thick through the shoulders, with a beard that scraped against her breast when he bent over her. He turned her onto her stomach, pulling her hips up so her ass was presented to him. His palm came down hard on her cheek, the sting sharp and sudden.

"Like them like this," he said to no one in particular. "Easier to control."

He entered her from behind, slower than the first but deeper, and she felt every inch of the difference. His hands gripped her waist, holding her in place while he worked himself inside her. The angle put pressure against her inner wall, against places she didn't want stimulated. But her body responded anyway, a flush of heat that shamed her.

She bit her lip to keep silent. She wouldn't give them that. Wouldn't let them hear anything that could be mistaken for pleasure. The cot frame pressed into her palms as she braced herself against his thrusts. Somewhere to her left, another woman was crying. Somewhere to her right, Mira's cot was silent.

The bearded fighter took his time. His thrusts were long and deliberate, punctuated by grunts and the slap of skin against skin. He reached around to grip her breast, squeezing hard enough to make her wince. His thumb found her nipple and rolled it, tugging until it stiffened against her will.

"See?" he breathed. "Your body knows what it's for."

Casta closed her eyes. She wouldn't respond. She wouldn't give him the satisfaction. But the heat was building despite herself, a traitorous response that made her want to scream. Her inner walls clenched around him involuntarily, and he laughed.

"That's it. Squeeze me. Show me you're learning."

He sped up, slamming into her hard enough to shove the cot forward an inch. The metal legs scraped against the floor. She felt him swell inside her, felt the pulse of his release. He stayed buried in her for a moment after, catching his breath, before withdrawing with a wet sound that made her stomach turn.

Two more. She counted them the way she'd counted the stairs. The third was quick, almost perfunctory. A young fighter who barely looked at her face, who finished in minutes and left without a word. The fourth was bigger, heavier, a man who liked to watch her expression while he took her. He held her wrists above her head and thrust slowly, grinding his hips in circles, watching for any reaction.

"You're the medic," he said. "The valuable one."

She stared at the ceiling.

"I had a cut on my arm last week. Would've healed wrong if not for the old doc. Before you." He thrust deeper, making her breath catch. "You'll be doing that. Fixing us up. Making us better so we can come down here and do this again."

The irony wasn't lost on her. She would heal them so they could use her. Mend the same bodies that broke her down.

He finished and left her alone on the cot. The sheets beneath her were damp with sweat and semen. Her thighs trembled. Between her legs, she was raw and swollen, the tender flesh overused and aching. She could feel the seed of multiple men leaking from her, pooling on the thin mattress.

She sat up slowly. The room was still full of sounds. Grunting, slapping skin, the occasional cry. Other women were still being used. Mira had a fighter between her legs, her face turned to the wall, her body moving with the mechanical acceptance of long practice.

Casta's hands shook as she retrieved her shift from the floor. She pulled it over her head, feeling the fabric stick to the mess on her skin. She needed to wash. She needed to think. She needed to find a way out of this.

Between sessions, she caught fragments of conversation. The fighters talked about the warlord's plans, about a raid on a settlement to the east. They talked about water rights and territory. They talked about her, the new medic, the one who could stitch wounds and set bones.

"Heard she's valuable," one said.

"Valuable enough to keep, not valuable enough to spare."

Casta filed that away. Valuable enough to keep. That was something. That was leverage.

When the rotation ended, she was exhausted, sore, and hollow. But she was alive. She had survived her first session in the pits.

The women were led back down, past the fighters' quarters, past the armory, past the kitchens. Casta caught glimpses of the tower's structure, the way power flowed downward. The warlord's chambers were at the top, above the water tank itself. Then the officers. Then the fighters. Then the breeders. And below them, the cistern pits, where the lowest of the low were kept.

She was not the lowest. She was a breeder, yes, but she was also a medic. That gave her a foot on a rung above the others.

Back in the cistern, Mira found her. "How was it?"

"I survived."

"That's all you can do at first." Mira sat beside her, close enough to whisper. "But you're smart. You'll figure out how to use what you have."

"What do you mean?"

"The medic thing. It's rare. Most of us are just bodies. But you have a skill they need. That's power, even here."

Casta considered that. Power. She had felt powerless all day, stripped and used and passed around. But Mira was right. She had something the tower needed.

And need could be leveraged.

"How do I get access to the upper levels?" she asked.

Mira's eyes widened. "You don't. Not unless you're called."

"Then I need to be called."

"How?"

Casta thought of the fighter's comment, the one about her being valuable. "I need someone to get hurt. Bad enough that they need a medic."

"That's dangerous."

"Everything here is dangerous." Casta's voice was steel. "I'm done being just a body. I'm going to be more."

Mira was silent for a long moment. Then she nodded slowly. "I'll help. If I can."

"Why?"

"Because you're the first person here who thinks like I do. Who wants to climb instead of just survive."

Casta looked around the cistern, at the women huddled on their cots, at the guards at the door, at the pipes that carried water up to the warlord's chambers.

"Then we climb," she said.

And somewhere above her, in the tower's heights, she knew the warlord was watching. She would make sure he saw her.

The First Emergency

The cistern pits smelled of sweat and sex, underlaid with the sour tang of stale water. Casta had learned to track time by the rotation of bodies above her, the shift of guards at the hatch, the distant clang of the tower's internal gates. Three days. Maybe four. The light never changed down here, just the dim glow of chemical lanterns that flickered when someone walked past.

She lay on the thin mattress in the corner, her thighs still slick from the morning rotation. Five men had taken their turns with her. She had stopped counting the individual acts and started counting the minutes instead. It was easier that way. Clinical. Detached.

The last one had finished quickly, grunting against her ear as he spent himself inside her. His weight had pressed her into the mattress, his breath hot and sour against her neck. When he'd finally pulled out and tucked himself back into his trousers, she'd felt the trickle of his release sliding down her inner thigh. She'd wiped herself with the edge of the thin shift, the only dignity available to her, and waited for the next guard to bring the next man.

But the next guard hadn't come. Not yet. A small mercy.

Mira sat beside her, knees drawn to her chest, green eyes fixed on the door. The younger woman had stopped shaking an hour ago, but her fingers still trembled against her shins.

"You're quiet today," Mira whispered.

"I'm always quiet."

"No. You're different quiet. Like you're thinking about something."

Casta closed her eyes. "I'm thinking about how long I can keep doing this without losing myself."

Mira didn't answer. There was no answer to give.

The alarm came without warning.

A harsh buzzer that ripped through the lower levels, followed by heavy boots on the metal stairs. Casta sat up, her heart hammering. The other captives in the pit stirred, some huddling together, others pressing against the walls.

The hatch swung open. A guard she recognized as Vance stood at the top, his face flushed, blood spattered across his jacket.

"Doc. You. Up."

Casta stared at him. "What?"

"Don't make me repeat myself. There's a man bleeding out upstairs. Rourke says you're a medic. Get up here."

She moved before she could think, her body responding to the command faster than her mind could process it. Her bare feet hit the cold metal floor. She was still in the thin shift they'd given her, the fabric stained and clinging to her skin.

"Like this?" she asked.

Vance's eyes traveled down her body. "Doesn't matter what you're wearing. Just move."

She climbed the ladder, her muscles aching from the morning's use. The upper levels were brighter, the air cleaner, and the contrast made her dizzy. She followed Vance through a maze of corridors, past armed men who watched her with hungry curiosity, until they reached a door marked with a red cross that had been painted over and painted again.

Inside, a man lay on a metal table. His name was Garrett, one of the fighters she'd seen during her first processing. His leg was a ruin. A deep gash from midthigh to knee, the muscle exposed, blood pumping in steady pulses that told her exactly what she was dealing with.

Femoral artery. Maybe nicked, maybe torn. Hard to tell through all the blood.

"He's going to die," one of the guards said.

Casta didn't answer. She was already moving, her hands finding the wound, pressing down hard. Garrett screamed, his back arching off the table.

"I need a tourniquet. Clean cloth. Water. Something to cauterize with." She looked at the guards. "Now."

They hesitated.

"Now, or he bleeds out while you stand there."

Vance nodded. The men scattered.

Casta leaned over Garrett, her hands slick with his blood. His eyes were wild, unfocused. He was going into shock.

"Hey. Hey, look at me."

He tried. His pupils were dilated, his breathing shallow.

"You're going to be fine. I've done this before. More times than I can count. But I need you to stay with me, okay? Don't you dare close your eyes."

He nodded, a tiny movement.

The guards returned with supplies. Casta worked quickly, efficiently, her hands moving with a precision that surprised even her. She'd been a medic for twelve years. She'd treated gunshot wounds, knife wounds, infections, burns. This was no different.

Except for the audience. Except for the armed men watching her every move, their hands on their weapons, their eyes on her body.

She pushed the thought away. Focus. Clinical. Detached.

The tourniquet went on. The bleeding slowed. She cleaned the wound, found the torn vessel, and clamped it with shaking hands. The cauterizing tool hissed as she pressed it against the flesh, and the smell of burning blood filled the room.

Garrett screamed again. Then he went limp.

"Check his pulse," she said, not looking up.

Vance pressed two fingers to Garrett's neck. "Still there. Weak."

"He'll make it. Get me sutures. I need to close this properly."

She worked for another twenty minutes, stitching the wound closed, cleaning the surrounding skin, applying a bandage. By the time she finished, her hands were trembling from exhaustion, and her shift was soaked through with blood and sweat.

She stepped back from the table. Garrett's breathing was steady, his color returning.

"He'll need antibiotics," she said. "And someone to watch him for signs of infection. Change the dressing twice a day. Keep it clean."

Vance stared at her. "Where'd you learn to do that?"

"Medical school. Before the collapse."

"Shit."

"Yeah."

The door opened. Casta looked up, and her breath caught in her throat.

Dirken Kademan stood in the doorway, his gray eyes fixed on her. He was taller than she remembered, broader, his presence filling the room in a way that made the guards shrink back. He wore a dark coat over his tactical gear, his cropped hair neat, his beard trimmed. His hands were clean.

He looked at the blood on her hands, the blood soaking through her shift, the pool of it spreading across the floor. Then he looked at Garrett, at the neat stitches, the steady rise and fall of his chest.

"He was dead," Dirken said. "That's what they told me. He was dead, and you brought him back."

"Not dead. Dying. There's a difference."

"Is there?"

She met his gaze. "I've seen dead. He wasn't dead. Not yet."

Dirken walked around the table, his boots clicking on the metal floor. He stopped in front of her, close enough that she could smell the leather of his coat, the soap on his skin. He was clean. She was covered in blood.

"Who taught you?"

"University, residency, years of field work. Same as any other medic."

"Not many medics left."

"No. There aren't."

He studied her for a long moment. His eyes traveled down her body, taking in the thin shift, the bloodstains, the marks on her thighs that were visible even through the fabric. She felt exposed, raw, seen in a way that went beyond the physical.

"You're valuable," he said. "More valuable than I thought."

"I'm still a breeder."

"Yes. You are. But you're also a medic. And that changes things."

He reached out and took her hand. She flinched, but he didn't let go. He turned her palm over, examining the blood under her nails, the calluses on her fingers. His thumb traced a slow circle against her wrist, and she felt the warmth of his skin against hers, the steady pulse of his heartbeat against her fingertips.

"You'll continue your duties in the pits. But when there's an injury, when someone needs treatment, you'll be called upstairs. You'll have access to the medical supplies. You'll answer to me."

"Answer to you?"

"I'm the one who evaluates the captives. I'm the one who decides their value. And right now, your value just went up significantly."

He released her hand. She felt the absence of his touch like a physical weight.

"Clean yourself up," he said. "There's a shower on this level. Use it. Then you'll be returned to the pits."

"Thank you."

The words came out before she could stop them. She didn't know why she said it. Gratitude for the shower? For the recognition? For not being killed?

Dirken's eyes flickered. "Don't thank me. You're still property. You're just more useful property now."

He turned and walked out, leaving her standing in the blood-soaked room with the guards watching her every move.

The shower was a revelation. Hot water, actual soap, a towel that wasn't threadbare. Casta stood under the stream for ten minutes, letting the heat soak into her muscles, washing away the blood, the sweat, the smell of the pits that clung to her skin.

She didn't let herself cry. She didn't have the energy.

When she came out, a clean shift was waiting for her. It was still thin, still revealing, but it was clean. She put it on and let the guards escort her back down.

The pits felt different now. Smaller. Darker. The other captives looked at her with a mixture of awe and fear. Mira was waiting for her, her green eyes wide.

"They said you saved a man's life."

"I did what I had to do."

"That's more than any of us have done since we got here."

Casta sat down on her mattress, her body aching. "It doesn't change anything. I'm still a breeder. I'm still property."

"But you have access now. You have power."

"I have a job. That's not the same thing."

Mira was quiet for a moment. Then she said, "It's more than we had before."

Casta didn't answer. She lay back on the mattress, staring up at the ceiling, at the pipes that carried water from the tower's well down to the pits. The water that kept them alive. The water that kept them trapped.

She thought about Garrett's leg, the neat stitches, the steady rhythm of his breathing. She thought about Dirken's eyes, the way he'd looked at her like she was a puzzle he was trying to solve.

She thought about the hot water, the clean towel, the small mercy of being allowed to wash.

And she thought about the morning rotation and the five men who'd used her, the way her body had learned to respond even when her mind was screaming no.

Her clinical skills had intersected with her captive status. She was still a breeder. But now she was also a medic. And that meant she had something the tower needed.

Something Dirken needed.

She closed her eyes and let the darkness take her. Tomorrow, there would be more rotations, more men using her body.

But tomorrow, there might also be another injury. Another chance to prove her value, another small step toward something she couldn't yet name.

Dual Service

The medical alcove smelled of antiseptic and old blood. Casta pressed a clean bandage to the gash on the fighter's forearm, her fingers steady despite the tremor that lived in her chest now. It had been three days since she'd saved the wounded man upstairs. Three days of being summoned to patch up scrapes and bruises between rotations to the pits.

"Hold it there," she said, guiding his hand to maintain pressure. "You'll need stitches if it opens again."

The fighter grunted, his eyes tracking her movements with the same hungry look all of them wore. But he didn't touch her. Word had spread. She was valuable now. Untouchable except during assigned sessions.

That made it worse somehow. The waiting.

She finished wrapping the wound and stepped back, wiping her hands on a rag. The alcove was small, barely six feet square, lined with salvaged medical supplies she'd organized into careful rows. Her domain. Her tiny island of purpose in this vertical world of concrete and rusted pipes.

"You're done," she said. "Keep it clean."

The fighter left without thanks. They never thanked her. She was just a tool that happened to know how to stitch flesh.

Casta leaned against the wall, pressing her palms flat against the cool concrete. She'd been here two weeks. Fourteen days of alternating between this alcove and the damp heat of the cistern pits. Fourteen days of learning the rhythm of the compound.

Morning brought medical calls. Afternoons meant pit rotations. Evenings were meals in the lower level common room with the other captives. Then sleep, if she could manage it, before the cycle started again.

Her body was learning new patterns. The ache between her thighs was constant now, a dull throb that never quite faded. She'd stopped flinching when the guards came for her. Stopped bargaining with herself about how she'd endure the next session.

She just went.

Footsteps in the corridor. Heavy boots. Casta straightened, her hand moving automatically to the shelf where she kept her scissors. But the guard who appeared in the doorway wasn't one of the regular pit escorts. It was Vance, one of Dirken's personal men.

"Doc," he said, the title still strange on his tongue. "Dirken wants you upstairs. One of the new captives is sick."

She grabbed her bag without question. That was another thing she'd learned. Questions only made things worse.

The climb to the upper levels was steep, the metal stairs vibrating with the constant hum of the water pumps. Casta followed Vance past the fighter quarters, past the mess hall, to a narrow room she'd never seen before. Inside, a young woman lay on a thin mattress, her face flushed with fever.

Casta knelt beside her, pressing a hand to her forehead. Hot. Too hot.

"How long's she been like this?"

"Found her this morning," Vance said from the doorway. "She's one of the new breeding stock. Arrived yesterday."

Casta pulled back the woman's eyelids, checked her pulse. Rapid and thready. Signs of dehydration. Possibly infection.

"I need water. Clean water. And a cold cloth."

Vance hesitated. Clean water was precious. But he nodded and disappeared.

Casta worked quickly, checking the woman's limbs for wounds, her abdomen for swelling. The fever was high but not critical. With fluids and rest, she'd likely recover.

The woman's eyes fluttered open. Wide, terrified, green. She looked young. Too young for this world.

"You're going to be okay," Casta said softly. "I'm going to help you."

The woman's hand found hers, gripping with surprising strength. "Please," she whispered. "Please don't let them..."

"Shh. Rest now."

Vance returned with a canteen and a rag. Casta wet the cloth and pressed it to the woman's forehead, then helped her drink small sips of water. The woman's name was Mira. She'd been taken from a settlement three days south. Her family was dead.

Casta listened, her hands moving automatically through the motions of care. This was the part she understood. The part that still made sense.

But even as she worked, a familiar tension coiled in her stomach. The morning was passing. Afternoon was coming.

And afternoon meant the pits.

The call came just past midday. A guard appeared in the doorway, his expression flat. "Rotation. You're needed below."

Casta finished tucking the blanket around Mira's shoulders and stood. Her hands were steady. Her voice was steady. "I'll be back to check on her tonight."

The descent to the cistern pits felt longer each time. The air grew thick and warm, carrying the smell of damp concrete and bodies. The pit was a converted water storage chamber, circular, with a low ceiling and a drain in the center. Straw mats covered the floor. Four men waited inside.

Casta stepped through the door and it closed behind her with a hollow thud.

She knew the routine now. Strip. Kneel. Wait.

The first man took her from behind, his hands rough on her hips. She closed her eyes and tried to find the place inside her where none of this existed. The place she'd cultivated over the past two weeks. A hollow space where she could wait while her body was used.

But today was different.

Today, when his hands gripped her breasts, she felt a flicker of heat. When he pushed deeper, her breath caught, and something low in her belly tightened. Not pain. Not fear.

Pleasure.

She bit her lip, hard, trying to focus on the sting. But her body was already responding, betraying her. Her hips began to move, small involuntary shifts that matched his rhythm. A sound escaped her throat, half gasp, half moan.

The man grunted, mistaking it for pain. He didn't slow down.

Casta's mind raced. This wasn't supposed to happen. She was a captive. A prisoner. Her body was a tool being used against her will. But the heat was spreading, pooling in her core, and she couldn't stop it.

When the second man took his turn, she was already slick. Already ready. The shame was a cold weight in her chest, but her body didn't care. It wanted. It craved.

She came with a strangled cry, her fingers digging into the straw mat, her whole body shuddering. The man above her laughed, a low rough sound. "That's it, doc. Let go."

She hated him. She hated herself more.

The session lasted two hours. By the end, she was raw and trembling, her thighs sticky, her mind a fog of shame and confusion. The guards led her back to the medical alcove and left her there without a word.

Casta sat on the floor, her back against the wall, and stared at her hands. They were shaking. She pressed them flat against her thighs and tried to breathe.

She'd come. In the middle of being used by strangers, she'd come.

It wasn't the first time her body had responded. But it was the first time she hadn't been able to stop it. The first time the pleasure had overwhelmed her control.

A knock at the door. Casta looked up, expecting another guard. But it was Mira, pale and shaky, wrapped in a thin blanket.

"Doc? I'm sorry to bother you. I just... I didn't know where else to go."

Casta forced herself to stand. Forced her voice to steady. "It's okay. Come in."

Mira shuffled inside, her eyes darting around the small space. "They told me you're a medic. That you helped people."

"I try."

"They also told me what happens in the pits." Mira's voice dropped. "Is it true? They use you like that?"

Casta's throat tightened. "Yes."

"How do you survive?"

The question hung in the air. Casta looked at Mira, at the fear in her young eyes, and felt a surge of something she couldn't name. Protectiveness. Guilt. Recognition.

"You find a way," she said quietly. "You find a part of yourself they can't touch. And you hold onto it."

But even as she said the words, she knew they weren't true anymore. They had touched that part. They were reshaping it. And she was letting them.

That night, when the guards came for her again, she didn't resist. She didn't dissociate. She let herself feel every touch, every thrust, every wave of pleasure that rolled through her body. And when she came, she let herself cry out.

The men noticed. They were rougher, more eager, feeding off her response. By the end, she was exhausted, her voice raw from moaning.

But something had shifted. The hollow place inside her was gone. In its place was a new kind of fire.

She didn't know if it was survival or surrender. She didn't know if it mattered anymore.

Back in the medical alcove, she checked on Mira one last time. The girl was sleeping, her fever broken, her breathing steady. Casta sat beside her and watched the rise and fall of her chest.

She'd heal this one. She'd protect her as long as she could. It was the only part of her old self that still made sense.

But even as she made the promise, she knew the truth. She was changing. Every session, every touch, every unwanted wave of pleasure was carving away the woman she'd been and replacing her with something new.

Something that might survive this place.

Something that might even learn to want it.

Private Examination

The summons came during the afternoon rotation. Casta was on her knees in the cistern pit, the cool stone pressing into her shins, when a guard's boot appeared at the edge of her vision.

"You. Medic. Up."

She raised her head, blinking against the dim light. The other captives around her stilled, their hands resting on her shoulders, her thighs. The rotation had been underway for less than an hour. She could feel the heat of their bodies, the lingering touch of the man who had been inside her moments before.

"Now." The guard's voice left no room for delay.

Extracting herself from the tangle of limbs, she ignored the muttered complaints. Her body ached in familiar ways, a deep soreness that had become as routine as breathing. Pulling her shift over her head, she followed the guard up the spiral stairs.

The upper levels were brighter. Cleaner. The air smelled different up here, less of sweat and more of metal and oil. She had been to the medical bay twice since the first emergency, but never beyond it. The guard led her past that door, down a narrow corridor she had not seen before.

He stopped at a heavy door and knocked once.

"Enter."

Dirken's voice. She knew it now, had catalogued its cadence during their brief interactions. Controlled. The voice of a man who measured every word before releasing it.

The guard pushed the door open and gestured for her to step inside.

The room was small but organized. A steel examination table dominated the center, its surface polished to a dull gleam. Shelves lined the walls, holding glass jars and metal instruments. A single lamp hung from the ceiling, casting a circle of harsh light onto the table.

Dirken stood beside the table, his arms crossed. He wore the same tactical gear as always, but his sleeves were rolled up, revealing the scars that mapped his forearms. His gray eyes tracked her as she entered, assessing.

"Close the door," he said.

She did. The latch clicked shut, sealing them in.

"You're wondering why you're here."

"The thought crossed my mind."

He moved around the table, his boots echoing on the concrete floor. "I've been observing you, Casta. Your work in the medical bay. Your conduct in the pits. You adapt quickly."

"I survive."

"Yes. That's what makes you interesting." He stopped in front of her, close enough that she could smell the soap on his skin. "Most captives break in the first week. They stop fighting. They stop thinking. But you haven't. You calculate. You strategize. You use your medical knowledge as leverage."

"Is that a crime?"

"No. It's an asset." He reached out and took her chin between his fingers, tilting her face up to the light. "But I need to understand exactly what I'm working with. Which means a thorough evaluation."

Her heart rate quickened. "I've already been examined. When I first arrived."

"That was a processing. This is different." He released her chin and stepped back. "Undress."

The command hung in the air between them. She had been told to undress countless times in the past weeks. In the pits, it was mechanical. A requirement of the rotation. But this was different. This was private. Intentional.

Reaching for the hem of her shift, she pulled it over her head.

Dirken's gaze traveled over her body with clinical precision. She stood still, her arms at her sides, her breathing shallow. The lamp's light fell across her skin, highlighting the bruises that bloomed along her ribs, the faint redness on her shoulders from the morning's rotation.

"Turn around."

She obeyed. His eyes followed the curve of her spine, the swell of her hips.

"Your healing is progressing well," he said. "The bruises from your first week are fading. Your muscle tone hasn't degraded. You're eating."

"They feed us enough to keep us functional."

"Function is the baseline. I'm interested in more than that." He moved closer, and she felt the heat of his body before he touched her. His hand landed on her shoulder, warm and calloused. "I'm interested in how you respond to specific stimuli."

His fingers traced down her arm, leaving a trail of goosebumps in their wake. A shiver ran through her, and she hated herself for it.

"Sensitive," he noted. "That's good. It means your nervous system is intact."

His hand continued its exploration, sliding across her back, tracing the line of her spine. Closing her eyes, she tried to detach, to treat this like any other medical examination. But her body refused to cooperate. Her nipples tightened. Her breath caught.

"You're reacting," he said, his voice low. "Interesting. Most captives go numb after the first few weeks. But you're still responsive."

"I can't control it."

"No. You can't." His hand moved to her hip, pulling her back against him. She felt the hardness of his body, the solid wall of his chest against her spine. "But you can learn to read it. To understand what your body tells you."

His lips brushed her ear. "Turn around."

She turned, facing him. His gray eyes were dark now, intense. He looked at her like she was a puzzle he was solving, a piece of machinery he was calibrating.

"Lie down on the table."

The steel was cold against her back. She lay still, her arms at her sides, her legs together. Dirken stood over her, his shadow falling across her body.

"Spread your legs."

She hesitated. The command was familiar, but the context was not. In the pits, it was a demand for access. Here, it felt like an invitation.

She parted her thighs.

He moved between them, his hands resting on her knees. "I'm going to examine you thoroughly. Every part. I need to know how you respond, what triggers you, what soothes you. This is for the compound's records."

But his voice had dropped, had grown rough at the edges. And she knew, with a certainty that settled in her gut, that this was not just for records.

His hands slid up her thighs, parting them wider. His thumbs pressed into the soft flesh of her inner thighs, spreading her open to his gaze. The cool air of the room touched her most intimate flesh, and she felt herself flush with heat at the same time. She was exposed. Vulnerable. And wet. She could feel her own arousal slick between her folds, could feel it building with each deliberate touch.

"You're wet."

The words were clinical, but the delivery was not. There was a heat in them, a possessiveness that made her stomach clench.

"I told you. I can't control it."

"No. But that's not the whole truth, is it?" He looked up at her, his eyes holding hers. "You've been in the pits for weeks. You've been used by dozens of men. And yet, when I touch you, you respond differently. I can see it in your eyes."

She wanted to deny it. But the words stuck in her throat.

He slid one finger inside her, slow and deliberate. She gasped, her hips rising off the table. The intrusion was gentle but firm, his finger curling upward to find the sensitive spot deep within her. He pressed against it, and lightning shot through her veins.

"Your pulse is elevated. Your breathing is shallow. Your pupils are dilated." He added a second finger, stretching her. The fullness made her whimper, her inner walls clenching around him. "These are physiological responses. But they're also psychological. You're not just reacting to touch. You're reacting to me."

Biting her lip, she fought the moan that built in her chest. His fingers moved inside her, finding a rhythm that made her toes curl. Each stroke pressed against that spot, each withdrawal dragged along her sensitive walls. His thumb found her clit, circling with practiced precision. The dual sensation was overwhelming, too much and not enough all at once.

"I want to hear you," he said. "I want to know what you sound like when you let go."

"I can't."

"You can. You just haven't been given permission." He curled his fingers, pressing against that spot inside her that made her vision blur. His thumb pressed harder, rolling her clit in tight circles. "You have permission now."

The moan escaped before she could stop it. Low and broken, it filled the small room. Dirken's eyes gleamed.

"Good. Again."

He increased the pace, his fingers driving into her with a steady rhythm. His thumb never stopped its circling, pressing and releasing, building pressure that coiled in her belly. She clutched the edges of the table, her knuckles white, her breath coming in ragged gasps. The wet sounds of his fingers inside her echoed off the walls, obscene and intoxicating.

"That's it. Let it build. Don't fight it."

She didn't want to let go. Letting go meant surrendering, meant accepting that this was more than survival. But her body was beyond her control now. The pleasure was a wave, rising and rising, and she was drowning in it. Her thighs trembled. Her back arched. The coil in her belly tightened with each thrust of his fingers, each press of his thumb.

"Dirken." His name came out as a plea.

"Yes. Say it again."

"Dirken."

His fingers drove deeper. His thumb pressed harder. And she shattered, her body arching off the table, a cry tearing from her throat. The orgasm ripped through her, wave after wave, her inner walls spasming around his fingers. He didn't stop, working her through it, drawing out every last tremor. His fingers stroked inside her, his thumb gentling its pressure as the aftershocks rolled through her body. She collapsed onto the table, boneless and breathless.

When she opened her eyes, he was watching her. His hand was still between her thighs, his fingers still inside her. But his expression had shifted. The clinical detachment was gone, replaced by something darker. Something hungry.

"That was only the beginning," he said. "We have a long night ahead of us."

He withdrew his fingers slowly, deliberately, letting her feel every inch of the withdrawal. Bringing them to his mouth, he tasted her. The gesture was deliberate, possessive. A claiming. His tongue traced the length of his fingers, and his eyes never left hers.

"Get up," he said. "On your knees."

She slid off the table, her legs unsteady. The cold floor bit into her knees as she knelt before him, looking up. He stood over her, his hand moving to his belt. The metallic sound of the buckle was loud in the quiet room. He unfastened his pants, and she watched, her mouth dry, her heart pounding. This was different from the pits. This was not anonymous use. This was deliberate. Intentional. Personal.

"You're going to learn to read your body," he said. "And I'm going to teach you. By the time I'm done, you'll know exactly what you need. And you'll have no shame in asking for it."

He pushed his pants down, freeing himself. He was hard, thick and heavy in the lamplight. The head of his cock was flushed, glistening at the tip. He took himself in hand, stroking slowly, and stepped closer. His tip brushed her lips, leaving a wet trace on her mouth.

"Open."

She parted her lips, and he slid inside. The taste of him was salt and skin, musk and heat. She took him deep, her tongue tracing the underside of his length. He filled her mouth, thick and pulsing against her tongue. His hand tangled in her hair, guiding her rhythm.

"That's it. Look at me."

Raising her eyes to his, the connection was electric. He was watching her with an intensity that made her feel seen, truly seen, for the first time since she had been taken. His hips moved, thrusting shallowly into her mouth. She swirled her tongue around the head, tasting the salt of him, the slick proof of his arousal.

"You're beautiful like this," he said. "On your knees. Taking me. Choosing to take me."

She wanted to deny that it was a choice. But the truth was, she could have resisted. She could have clamped her jaw shut, could have turned away. But she hadn't. She had opened for him. She had welcomed him. And that realization was more terrifying than anything else.

He moved in her mouth, his hips thrusting with increasing urgency. His grip on her hair tightened, pulling her onto him with each stroke. She relaxed her throat, taking him deeper, feeling him hit the back of her throat. She swallowed around him, and his breath hitched. She could feel him throbbing against her tongue, could taste the precum that leaked from his tip.

"I'm going to come in your mouth," he said. "And you're going to swallow. Every drop."

She nodded, the motion drawing him deeper. His thrusts grew erratic, his breathing ragged. His hand fisted in her hair, holding her in place. Then he was coming, hot and thick, flooding her mouth. She swallowed, tasting him, feeling him pulse against her tongue. Rope after rope of his release filled her, and she took it all, swallowing every drop as he had commanded.

When he was done, he pulled out slowly, his hand stroking her cheek. She stayed on her knees, looking up at him, her lips wet, her body humming. The taste of him lingered on her tongue.

"Good girl," he said. "Get dressed. I'll have you brought back to your cell."

Standing on shaky legs, she pulled her shift over her head. As she reached for the door, his voice stopped her.

"Casta."

She turned.

"This won't be the last time. I'll be calling for you again. And again. Until you understand exactly what you are."

She didn't ask what that was. She wasn't sure she wanted to know the answer.

The guard was waiting in the corridor. He led her back down the spiral stairs, through the dim passages, to the cell she shared with the other captives. Lying on her cot, she stared at the ceiling, her body still echoing with the memory of Dirken's touch.

She had been used by dozens of men in the pits. She had been examined, catalogued. But none of it had felt like this. None of it had made her feel like she was being seen. Claimed. And that was the most dangerous thing of all.

Because she was starting to want it too.

Outbreak Pressure

The first case came at dawn. Casta heard the retching before she saw the source, a thin sound echoing up from the lower cistern levels. She had been awake for hours already, her body still sore from the previous night's rotation, her mind already calculating how many hours until the next one.

The guard at her door didn't bother with pleasantries. "Doc. You're needed."

She followed him down the spiral stairs, her bare feet slapping against cold metal. The smell hit her first, the sharp acrid stench of vomit and diarrhea mixing with the ever present musk of unwashed bodies. Three women lay on the concrete floor of the lower common room, their faces pale, their bodies trembling.

"How long?" Casta asked, already kneeling beside the first one.

"Started a couple hours ago," Mira said, appearing at her side with a bucket of clean water. "I tried to keep them hydrated, but they can't keep anything down."

Casta checked the woman's pulse. Rapid, thready. Her skin was hot and dry. Dehydration setting in fast. "What did they drink?"

"Same water as everyone else."

"No. What specifically?" Casta pressed. "Think, Mira. Did they get water from somewhere different?"

Mira's brow furrowed. "The lower cistern. It's been tasting off for a few days. Metallic."

Casta's stomach dropped. She had noticed the taste herself, had mentioned it to one of the guards, but nothing had been done. Now three women were paying the price.

"I need clean water. Boiled if possible. And I need access to the medical stores upstairs."

The guard shook his head. "Can't authorize that. You know the rules."

"Then get someone who can." Casta's voice was sharp, cutting through the morning air. "These women will die without proper supplies."

The guard hesitated, then disappeared up the stairs. Casta turned back to her patients, her hands moving automatically through triage. She checked each woman in turn, assessing symptoms, identifying which one needed attention first.

The first woman, a quiet brunette named Sera, was the most severe. Her lips were cracked, her eyes sunken. Casta pressed on her skin and watched the tent of dehydrated flesh linger before slowly flattening. Fluids. She needed fluids immediately.

"Mira, I need you to find me some salt. Any kind. And sugar if there's any left."

"There's some in the upper kitchens. But I can't go up there."

"Then find someone who can."

Mira nodded and scurried away. Casta was alone with her patients, the sounds of their suffering filling the small room. She worked methodically, cleaning the vomit from their faces, positioning them on their sides to prevent aspiration, offering sips of clean water that most of them couldn't keep down.

Some time later, Dirken appeared at the doorway. He looked down at the scene, his expression unreadable. "I'm told you need supplies."

"I need oral rehydration salts. Clean water. Antiemetics if you have them. And these women need to be moved somewhere with better ventilation."

He studied her for a long moment. "The medical stores are on level three. You'll be escorted."

"I'll need to stay there. Treat them there."

"That's not how this works."

"Then how does it work?" Casta snapped, exhaustion fraying her control. "You want me to keep your fighters alive, keep your breeding stock healthy, but you won't give me the tools to do it?"

Dirken's eyes narrowed. "Watch your tone."

She held his gaze, her heart pounding. "I'm watching three women die. That's what I'm watching. And I can't stop it without help."

Something shifted in his face. He turned to the guard. "Escort her to level three. Give her whatever she needs."

Casta let out a breath she didn't know she was holding. "Thank you."

"Don't thank me yet. You still have pit duty tonight."

The words hit her like a physical blow. She had forgotten. In the chaos of the outbreak, she had forgotten what she was. What she was for.

"I'll be ready," she said, her voice flat.

Dirken studied her for another moment, then turned and left. Casta followed the guard up the stairs, her legs heavy with exhaustion, her mind already calculating how she could stretch herself to cover both duties.

Level three was cleaner than the lower levels. The air was cooler, the concrete walls painted a sterile white. The medical room was small but well stocked, shelves lined with bandages, antiseptics, and a few precious bottles of antibiotics. Casta gathered what she needed, her hands moving with practiced efficiency.

The guard watched her the whole time, his presence a constant reminder that she was not free. She was just a tool being moved to where she was most useful.

She returned to the lower level with supplies. Mira had found salt and sugar, and Casta mixed a crude rehydration solution, coaxing the women to drink small sips. She worked through the morning, through the afternoon, her body running on adrenaline and habit.

More cases appeared as the day wore on. By evening, seven women were sick. Two of them were severe, their bodies wracked with violent cramps and diarrhea that left them too weak to lift their heads. Casta moved between them, a ghost in her own body, her hands doing the work while her mind retreated somewhere numb and distant.

She was changing a soiled rag when the guard appeared. "Time."

She looked up, uncomprehending. "What?"

"Pit duty. You're due."

Her hands froze on the rag. "I can't. I have patients."

"Orders are orders."

"They'll die if I leave them."

"Then they'll die." The guard's voice was flat, unconcerned. "You're coming with me."

Casta looked at Mira, who was watching with wide, frightened eyes. "Keep them hydrated. Small sips, as often as they can take it. If anyone gets worse, send for me."

"I will." Mira's voice was barely a whisper.

Casta followed the guard, her feet dragging. She was led to the pit room, a concrete chamber in the lower levels where the breeding sessions took place. Three men were already there, stripped to the waist, their bodies hard and impatient. The guard handed her off and left.

She stood in the center of the room, her shift still stained with vomit and sweat, her hands trembling from exhaustion. The men looked at her like she was meat.

"On your knees," one of them said.

She obeyed. There was no fight left in her. Her body went through the motions, her mind retreating to the clinical detachment she had learned in the settlement. She was a vessel. A tool for their use. Doing what she had to do to survive.

The first man circled behind her, his calloused hands shoving her shift up over her hips. She felt the cool air on her exposed skin, felt his rough fingers parting her thighs, positioning her. He didn't bother with preparation. He spat into his palm, slicked himself once, and drove into her with a single brutal thrust that knocked the air from her lungs.

She gasped, her fingers clenching against the cold concrete floor. He was thick, and the lack of preparation made the intrusion burn. His hands gripped her hips hard enough to bruise, yanking her back onto him with each forward thrust. The wet slap of flesh against flesh echoed off the walls. He set a punishing rhythm, fast and mechanical, using her body with the same indifference she might use a tool.

She closed her eyes and thought of the women downstairs, of the rehydration solution she had mixed, of the way Sera's pulse had felt under her fingers. She held onto those details, let them fill her mind, while her body was used. The man grunted above her, his breath coming in short harsh bursts. His fingers dug into the soft flesh of her hips as he picked up speed, chasing his release.

When he finished, he pulled out abruptly, leaving her feeling suddenly empty. She could feel his warmth sliding down her inner thigh as he stepped away, already done with her.

The second man was slower, more deliberate. He made her turn around, made her look at him while he worked. His eyes were cold, his breath sour. She stared at a point just past his shoulder, counting the cracks in the concrete wall while he pushed her onto her back.

He entered her carefully, almost gently, which was worse in some ways. He took his time, his hands roaming her body, cupping her breasts, pinching her nipples until she winced. His hips rolled in a slow, grinding rhythm that seemed designed to draw the encounter out as long as possible. She felt her body responding despite herself, the involuntary clench and release of muscles she couldn't control. He noticed and smiled, a thin cruel expression.

"See? Your body likes it," he murmured against her ear. "Even if your mind doesn't."

She said nothing. She stared at the cracks in the wall. Seventeen cracks. Eighteen. Nineteen. The man's pace quickened, his breathing ragged. He finished with a shudder, spilling himself inside her, and she felt the warmth flood her cervix. He pulled out and wiped himself on her shift.

The third man was the worst. He wanted her to respond, wanted her to make sounds, wanted her to pretend she wanted it. He crouched in front of her, tilted her chin up, made her meet his eyes.

"Show me you want it," he said.

She couldn't. Her body was too tired, her mind too far gone. He slapped her when she didn't react, her head snapping to the side, stars bursting behind her eyes. The copper taste of blood filled her mouth where she'd bitten her lip.

"Do better," he growled.

She tried. She made sounds, soft moans she forced past her split lip. She moved her hips in the way they expected, rolling them up to meet his thrusts. She wrapped her arms around his neck and dug her fingers into his shoulders. But it was hollow, a performance without feeling, and he knew it.

He grabbed her throat, not squeezing hard enough to choke but hard enough to remind her he could. His thrusts grew erratic, desperate. "Tell me you want it," he demanded.

"I want it," she whispered, her voice flat and mechanical.

He groaned, disgusted but aroused enough to finish. He spent himself inside her with a final brutal thrust that made her cry out despite herself, then shoved her away. She landed hard on the concrete, her hip taking the impact, pain radiating up her side.

She lay there for a long time, her body aching, her mind blank. She could feel the combined wetness of three men sliding out of her, pooling beneath her on the cold floor. Her lip throbbed where she'd been struck. Her hips were already bruising where the first man had gripped her. She stared at the ceiling, at the water stains on the concrete, and felt nothing.

Then she pulled herself up, wiped the blood from her split lip, and went back to her patients.

The night was a blur. She worked by candlelight, checking vitals, administering fluids, cleaning soiled bedding. Two of the women stabilized. One got worse. Casta stayed by her side, holding her hand, whispering words of comfort that felt meaningless even as she said them.

By dawn, the woman was dead.

Casta sat beside the body, her hands resting on the still chest, her eyes dry. She had seen death before. She had held the hands of dying patients in the settlement. But this felt different. This felt like failure.

Mira found her there, some hours later. "Casta. You need to rest."

"I can't."

"You'll collapse."

"Then I'll collapse."

Mira knelt beside her, her hand gentle on Casta's shoulder. "You did everything you could."

"It wasn't enough."

"It was more than anyone else would have done."

Casta looked at her, really looked at her. Mira's face was pale with exhaustion, her eyes red from crying. She had worked just as hard, just as long, and she was still here, still trying to help.

"I'm sorry," Casta said. "I'm sorry you're in this place."

Mira shook her head. "I'm sorry you're here too. But we're here. And we have to make the best of it."

Casta laughed, a bitter sound that caught in her throat. "The best of it."

"Yes." Mira's voice was firm. "We survive. We help each other. And we find whatever small pieces of good we can."

Casta looked at the dead woman, then at the living ones who were slowly recovering. She thought about the men who had used her, the guards who had watched, the system that had created all of this. And she thought about the clean water that had caused the outbreak, the water that no one had bothered to test or treat.

"I need to talk to Dirken," she said.

Mira's eyes widened. "Why?"

"Because this doesn't have to happen again. I can prevent it. I can test the water, treat it, keep everyone healthy." She paused, the words forming slowly in her exhausted mind. "If I have the right tools, the right authority, I can make this place better."

"Better for who?"

"For everyone." Casta met Mira's gaze. "For us. For the other women. For the fighters who don't want to die from preventable diseases."

Mira was silent for a long moment. "You're talking about working with them. Accepting your place here."

"I'm talking about surviving." Casta's voice was flat, pragmatic. "I'm talking about finding whatever power I can in this place and using it to protect the people I can protect."

"And the people you can't?"

"I mourn them. And I move on."

Mira's hand tightened on her shoulder. "That's not the woman I met three weeks ago."

"No. It's not." Casta stood, her legs shaky, her body bruised. "But that woman is gone. And this one is what's left."

She walked to the door, then paused. "I'll be back soon. Keep them hydrated."

"Where are you going?"

"To find Dirken. To make a deal."

She climbed the stairs, level by level, her body protesting each step. The guards let her pass, their eyes following her with curiosity and suspicion. She found Dirken in his quarters on level five, sitting at a desk covered in maps and reports.

He looked up when she entered, his eyes taking in her disheveled state. "You look terrible."

"I feel terrible." She sat down across from him without waiting for permission. "We need to talk."

"About what?"

"The water. The outbreak. The fact that women are dead and more will follow if nothing changes."

He leaned back in his chair, studying her. "What do you propose?"

"I need access to the well. I need to test the water, treat it if necessary. I need a dedicated space for medical treatment, with proper supplies and ventilation. And I need authority to quarantine anyone who shows symptoms."

"That's a lot of demands."

"That's a lot of lives." She held his gaze. "I'm not asking for freedom. I'm asking for the tools to do my job. Your fighters need me. Your breeding stock needs me. You need me."

Something flickered in his eyes. "And what do you need?"

She paused, the question hanging in the air between them. What did she need? Rest. Safety. A way out. But those weren't options. So she gave him the only honest answer she had left.

"I need to matter. I need to be more than just a body they use and discard. I need to have purpose."

Dirken was silent for a long moment. Then he nodded slowly. "I'll talk to Rourke. But there will be conditions."

"There are always conditions."

"You'll still have pit duty. You'll still be available when you're needed. But I'll make sure you have the time and resources to do your medical work as well."

Casta nodded, a strange sense of relief washing over her. It wasn't freedom. It wasn't escape. But it was something. It was a crack in the system, a small space where she could exercise her skills and her will.

"Thank you," she said.

"Don't thank me yet." He echoed his earlier words, but his tone was different now. Softer. Almost thoughtful. "You're becoming something useful, Casta. That's both a blessing and a curse."

"I know." She stood, her body aching. "I'm learning that lesson every day."

She left his quarters and walked back down the stairs, her mind already planning. She would test the water. She would treat the remaining patients. She would find a way to prevent future outbreaks. And she would survive, not as the woman she had been, but as the woman she was becoming.

When she reached the lower level, Mira was waiting for her. "What happened?"

"I made a deal." Casta knelt beside the nearest patient, checking her pulse. "I'm going to have more authority over medical matters. More resources."

"And in exchange?"

Casta looked up, her eyes meeting Mira's. "I'm going to keep doing what I'm doing. Healing. Serving. Surviving."

Mira was quiet for a moment. Then she nodded slowly. "That sounds like a plan."

"It's not a plan. It's an acceptance." Casta turned back to her patient. "But it's all I've got."

The outbreak continued for three more days. Casta worked through all of them, sleeping in short bursts between crises, eating whatever was put in front of her without tasting it. Her body became a machine, her mind a focused blade cutting through the chaos.

By the fourth day, the cases had stopped. The remaining patients were recovering, their strength slowly returning. Casta had tested the water and found the contamination, a bacterial bloom in the lower cistern that had gone unnoticed. She treated it with chlorine from the medical stores, and the outbreak ended.

She stood at the edge of the well, watching the clear water flow, and felt something shift inside her. She had done this. She had saved lives. She had made a difference in this place, in this terrible, broken place.

And she knew, with a cold certainty, that she would never leave.

The compound was her home now. The tower was her world. And she would make it as good as she could, for as long as she could.

That was the best she could hope for. That was enough.

She turned away from the well and walked back down into the depths, ready for whatever came next.

Choice of Allegiance

The explosion rattled the tower. Casta's hands froze over the wound she was cleaning, her breath catching as shouts echoed up from the lower levels. Another blast followed, closer this time, and she felt the concrete vibrate beneath her feet.

"What was that?" Mira's voice trembled from the corner where she was sorting bandages.

Casta didn't answer. She moved to the doorway, listening. The compound had never been attacked before. In the weeks since her capture, the tower had seemed invincible, its walls thick enough to hold out any threat. But the sounds coming from below told a different story.

Boots pounded on the stairs. A fighter appeared, his face smeared with blood from a gash on his forehead. "Doc. You're needed on the main level. We've got wounded."

Casta grabbed her kit without hesitating. She followed him down the narrow staircase, her mind racing. This was her chance. In the chaos, she could sabotage supplies, poison bandages, leave a wound untreated. She could help the attackers from the inside.

The main level was chaos. Fighters were dragging wounded comrades through the halls. The gate had been breached, but the inner doors held. Through the small window in the steel, she could see figures moving in the yard, their weapons raised.

"Here." A fighter grabbed her arm and pulled her to a man on the floor. His leg was torn open, blood pooling beneath him. "Fix him."

Casta knelt. Her hands moved automatically, cleaning the wound, checking for debris. She could slow down. She could make a mistake. She could let him bleed out.

But she didn't.

Her fingers worked quickly, efficiently, tying off the bleeder and packing the wound. The fighter groaned, his eyes finding hers. "Thanks, doc."

She nodded, already moving to the next patient. Her mind was a war zone of its own. Every time she saved a life, she was helping the compound. Every time she patched a fighter, she was prolonging her own captivity. But the alternative felt like a betrayal of something deeper. She was a healer. That was who she was.

Wasn't it?

Hours passed. The battle ebbed and flowed. Casta treated wound after wound, her body growing numb with exhaustion. At some point, Mira appeared beside her, handing her supplies, holding pressure on wounds while Casta worked. They moved together without speaking, a rhythm born of shared desperation.

Dirken found her during a lull. He was splattered with blood, his shirt torn at the shoulder, but his eyes were sharp and focused. "You're still alive."

"So are you." She didn't look up from the wound she was stitching.

"We're holding. They're pulling back to regroup." He stepped closer, his voice dropping. "I need to know where you stand."

Casta's needle paused. She looked at him, at the lines of exhaustion and tension on his face. He was watching her with that calculating gaze she knew so well, the one that stripped her down to her components and weighed her value.

"I'm standing right here," she said. "Treating your wounded."

"That's not an answer."

"It's the only one you're getting right now."

He studied her for a long moment. Then he nodded, almost imperceptibly. "Keep working. I'll send more patients."

He left. Casta stared at the door for a moment, then went back to her stitching. She didn't know what she was feeling. Loyalty? Stockholm syndrome? Or something more practical, a calculation that survival lay with the tower, not against it.

Another wave of wounded came. She treated them all. A man with a crushed hand. A woman with a deep gash in her side. A boy who couldn't have been more than eighteen, his chest torn open by shrapnel. She worked on him for an hour, her hands shaking as she tried to save him. She failed.

When she finally sat back, her gloves slick with blood, she felt something break inside her. Not a clean break, but a slow fracturing, like ice cracking under pressure. She had tried so hard to hold onto who she was. But who was she now?

Mira brought her water. Casta drank it mechanically, staring at the wall.

"You did everything you could," Mira said softly.

"Did I?" Casta's voice was hollow. "I don't know what I'm doing anymore."

"You're surviving."

"Is that enough?"

Mira didn't answer. She didn't have to.

The attack resumed at dusk. This time, the tower's defenses held. Casta heard the shouts of victory echoing through the halls, the sound of the attackers retreating. She kept working, treating the last of the wounded, her movements mechanical and precise.

When it was over, Dirken came for her. He took her arm and led her up the stairs, past the medical level, past the breeding pits, all the way to the main hall. The space was filled with fighters, their faces lit by torches, their voices raised in celebration.

Rourke stood at the head of the room, his coat splattered with blood. When he saw Casta, he raised his hand, and the room fell silent.

"We held," he said, his voice carrying. "We drove them back. And we have our medic to thank."

Casta felt every eye in the room turn to her. She stood still, her hands still stained with blood, her body aching with exhaustion.

"She could have let us die," Rourke continued. "She could have sabotaged our supplies. But she didn't. She chose us."

Dirken's hand tightened on her arm. He stepped forward, pulling her with him until they stood in the center of the room.

"She's mine," Dirken said, his voice loud and clear. "I claimed her the day she arrived. But tonight, I claim her again. In front of all of you."

The crowd murmured. Casta's heart pounded. She knew what was coming. She had seen it happen before, to other captives who had proven their worth. A public claiming, a ritual that marked a woman as belonging to the compound, to a specific man, to a new life.

Dirken turned to her. His eyes were dark, intense, burning with something she hadn't seen before. Not just possession. Something more.

"Do you accept?" he asked, his voice low enough that only she could hear.

Casta looked at him. She thought about her old settlement, about the people she had left behind. She thought about the life she had lost, the ideals she had clung to. She thought about the boy she had failed to save, the blood on her hands, the exhaustion in her bones.

And she thought about the way Dirken looked at her, like she was valuable, like she was necessary, like she was his.

"Yes," she said.

The word hung in the air. Dirken's expression shifted, a flicker of surprise, then satisfaction. He pulled her close, his mouth finding hers. The kiss was hard, demanding, a claiming in itself. Casta kissed him back, her hands gripping his shirt, her body pressing against his.

The crowd cheered. Dirken broke the kiss, his breath ragged. He turned to face the room, one arm wrapped around Casta's waist.

"She's ours," he said. "And she stays."

The celebration resumed. But Dirken didn't let her go. He led her to a platform at the front of the hall, where a low bed had been set up. Casta's stomach tightened. She knew what was expected. A public display, a demonstration of her new status.

Dirken climbed onto the platform and held out his hand. Casta took it. Her heart was racing, but not with fear. Something else, something she didn't want to name.

He laid her down on the bed, his body covering hers. The crowd watched, their voices a low hum in the background. Dirken's hands moved over her, stripping away her bloodstained clothes, revealing her skin to the torchlight.

"You're mine," he whispered against her ear. "Say it."

"I'm yours."

"Again."

"I'm yours, Dirken."

His mouth found her throat, her collarbone, her breasts. Casta arched beneath him, her fingers tangling in his hair. The public nature of it should have shamed her. But instead, it felt like power. They were all watching, all seeing her claimed, all knowing that she had chosen this.

Dirken's hands spread her thighs. He positioned himself above her, his eyes locked on hers. "This is your last chance to run," he said. "After this, there's no going back."

Casta looked up at him. She saw the man who had examined her, used her, broken her down piece by piece. She also saw the man who had given her purpose, who had valued her skills, who had seen her as more than just a body.

"I'm not running," she said.

He entered her in one slow, deliberate thrust. Casta gasped, her body stretching to accommodate him. He was thick, hard, filling her completely. He began to move, his pace steady and relentless, each stroke pushing her deeper into the bed.

The crowd watched. Casta could feel their eyes on her, their hunger, their approval. She let herself feel it, let it wash over her. She was theirs now. She belonged.

Dirken's rhythm quickened. His breath was hot against her neck, his hands gripping her hips hard enough to bruise. Casta wrapped her legs around him, pulling him deeper, meeting his thrusts with her own.

"That's it," he growled. "Take it. Take all of it."

She did. She took every inch of him, every stroke, every moment of possession. Her body responded in ways she couldn't control, her hips rising to meet his, her inner muscles clenching around him. The pleasure built slowly, a pressure that grew with each thrust.

"Come for me," Dirken commanded. "Come for them."

Casta's climax hit her like a wave, crashing through her body, pulling a cry from her lips. She arched beneath him, her vision blurring, her senses overwhelmed. Dirken followed a moment later, his body tensing, a low groan escaping his throat as he spilled inside her.

He stayed inside her for a long moment, his forehead pressed to hers. The crowd cheered, their voices a distant roar. Casta closed her eyes, feeling the weight of him, the heat of him, the reality of what she had just done.

When he finally pulled out, he gathered her in his arms, holding her against his chest. "You're mine," he said again, softer this time. "And I'll never let you go."

Casta didn't answer. She didn't have to. She was exactly where she belonged.

Clean Water New Rules

The tower hummed with a different energy the morning after the siege ended. Casta sensed it in the way the walls seemed to breathe, the lighter footsteps of guards passing her door, the absence of that constant low thrum of crisis that had pressed against her skull for weeks. Clean water. They had secured the eastern well, and the compound was drinking deep for the first time in a generation.

She stood at the narrow window of her new quarters, three levels above the cistern pits, and watched the sunrise paint the ruined city in shades of rust and gold. Her quarters. The room was small but private, with a real cot instead of a pit mat, a basin table, and a locked cabinet for her medical supplies. Dirken had escorted her here last night, after the fighting ended and Rourke had made his decree in front of the assembled compound.

"She stays," the warlord had said, his cold blue eyes sweeping over the gathered fighters and captives. "Permanent dual status. Breeder and medic. Anyone who touches her without authorization answers to me."

The words had settled into Casta like stones dropping into still water, sending ripples through every part of her. She had expected shame. She had expected the ghost of her old self screaming in protest. Instead, a different truth had taken root. One that terrified her with its quiet certainty.

She had come home.

A knock at the door pulled her from the window. She turned, already knowing who it would be, and her pulse quickened as Dirken stepped inside. He looked different this morning. The tension that usually carved lines around his mouth had softened. His gray eyes held something she hadn't seen before, something almost tender.

"You're up early," he said, closing the door behind him.

"Couldn't sleep." She crossed her arms, then uncrossed them, suddenly aware of how she must look in the thin shift they had given her. "Too much settling."

He moved toward her, his boots quiet on the concrete floor. "Settling. That's a good word for it." He stopped a foot away, close enough that she could smell the clean soap on his skin, the faint leather of his vest. "How do you feel?"

The question caught her off guard. Not clinical. Not commanding. Just genuine.

"I don't know," she admitted, and the honesty surprised her. "I thought I'd feel different. Broken, maybe. Or desperate to escape." She laughed, a dry sound with no humor in it. "Instead I feel rooted."

Dirken's hand came up, his fingers brushing a strand of hair from her face. The touch was light, almost reverent, and she found herself leaning into it before she could stop herself.

"Rooted is good," he said. "Rooted means you belong."

"Is that what I am now?" She met his eyes, holding his gaze. "Do I belong?"

"You've belonged since the moment you saved that fighter." His thumb traced her jawline, featherlight. "You just didn't know it yet."

She should have pulled away. The weight of everything she had lost should have pressed down on her. Instead, a warmth unfurled in her chest, terrifyingly close to hope.

"Rourke wants to see you," Dirken said, his hand dropping to his side. "Formal ceremony. He wants the whole compound to witness."

"Ceremony?"

"Elevation. You'll be marked as permanent. Given the run of the medical bay. Your own quarters." He paused, a ghost of a smile crossing his face. "Mine, if you want them."

Her breath caught. "Yours?"

"If you're ready for that." His voice dropped, intimate and low. "If you want to be claimed fully. Not as a captive, but as a partner."

The word hit her like a physical blow. Partner. Not pit slave. Not breeder. Something else entirely.

"I..." She swallowed, her throat dry. "I don't know what I want anymore. Everything I thought I knew about myself, it's all gone."

"Good," Dirken said simply. "That's the first step."

He left her with that, and Casta stood alone in her new quarters, staring at the closed door, her hand pressed to her chest where her heart hammered against her ribs. The old Casta would have wept at the loss of herself. The new Casta felt something else entirely. She felt hungry.

The ceremony was held in the main hall as the sun climbed past the eastern ruins. The entire compound had gathered, fighters on the upper catwalks, captives clustered below, everyone watching as Rourke stood on the raised platform at the far end. Casta was escorted to the center of the hall, her shift replaced with a simple dark tunic and pants, her hair loose around her shoulders.

Rourke's voice carried through the space, rough and absolute. "Casta Juniper. You came to us as a negotiator, a medic, a woman of another settlement. You leave that behind today." He stepped down from the platform, approaching her with slow, deliberate steps. "You have proven your worth in the pits and in the medical bay. You have saved lives. You have borne our use. You have chosen to stay."

He stopped in front of her, close enough that she could see the faded tattoos curling up his neck, the scars that mapped his forearms. His cold blue eyes searched hers.

"Do you accept your place here? As breeder and medic, bound to this compound, subject to its laws and its protection?"

The words hung in the air, heavy with finality. Casta felt the pressure of every eye on her, the silence pressing in from all sides. She thought of her old settlement, of the poisoned negotiations, of the woman she had been. That woman seemed like a stranger now, someone she had read about in a book, distant and unreal.

"I accept," she said, and her voice did not waver.

Rourke nodded, then reached into his coat and pulled out a thin leather cord with a single metal charm attached to it. A stylized drop of water, polished smooth. He fastened it around her neck, the metal cool against her skin.

"This marks you as permanent. As ours." He stepped back, his voice rising to address the crowd. "Casta Juniper. Breeder. Medic. Claimed by the tower."

A cheer went up from the fighters, a sound that vibrated through the concrete floor and up into her bones. The captives watched in silence, their expressions unreadable. Casta touched the charm at her throat, feeling the finality of it.

She was theirs. And somehow, impossibly, she was glad.

The celebration that followed was raw and loud, with barrels of the newly secured water being passed around, fighters slapping each other on the back, the tension of the siege bleeding out into laughter and rough camaraderie. Casta stood at the edge of it, watching, feeling the new shape of her life settling around her like a second skin.

Mira found her later, the younger woman's green eyes wide with something between awe and fear. "You did it," she whispered, clutching Casta's arm. "You actually did it. You're free."

"Not free," Casta corrected, but there was no bitterness in her voice. "Claimed. It's different."

"Is it better?"

Casta thought about it. About the weight of the charm against her chest. About the private quarters waiting for her. About Dirken's offer. About the way her body had learned to crave what it once feared.

"Yes," she said, and meant it. "It's better."

Mira squeezed her arm, then slipped away, leaving Casta alone with her thoughts. The celebration swirled around her, but she felt separate from it, suspended in a bubble of calm. She watched the fighters drink and laugh, watched the captives serve and endure, and the tower rose around her like a living thing, its rhythms already imprinted on her bones.

Dirken found her as the afternoon faded toward evening, the light through the high windows turning golden and soft. He took her hand without a word and led her away from the crowd, up the winding stairs to his quarters on the upper level.

His room was larger than hers, with a wide bed covered in furs, a desk cluttered with maps and papers, a window that looked out over the compound's walls to the wasteland beyond. He closed the door and turned to face her, his gray eyes dark with something that made her stomach tighten.

"You don't have to stay," he said, his voice rough. "If you want to go back to your own quarters, I understand."

Casta shook her head slowly. "I don't want to go back."

She crossed the room to him, each step feeling like a choice, like a door closing behind her. She stopped when she was close enough to feel the heat radiating from his body, to smell the clean sweat and leather that clung to him.

"I want to stay," she said, and her voice was steady. "I want to be yours."

His breath caught, and then his hands were on her, pulling her against him, his mouth finding hers in a kiss that was nothing like the clinical examinations or the public claiming. This was hungry and desperate and tender all at once, his tongue sliding against hers, his hands gripping her hips like he was afraid she would disappear.

She melted into him, her fingers curling into the fabric of his vest, pulling him closer. The kiss deepened, and she felt something crack open inside her, a dam she hadn't known she was holding back. She wanted this. She wanted him. She wanted the heat of his skin, the claiming that went beyond ceremony and into the bone-deep truth of who she was now.

He walked her backward to the bed, his mouth never leaving hers, his hands working at the ties of her tunic. The fabric fell away, and she felt the cool air on her skin, followed by the heat of his palms as he cupped her breasts, his thumbs brushing over her nipples until they hardened into tight peaks. She gasped against his mouth, the sensation shooting straight down between her thighs, and he swallowed the sound, kissing her deeper.

"Tell me what you want," he murmured against her lips, his voice rough with need. "Tell me, Casta."

"You," she breathed, the word a confession and a surrender. "I want you. All of you."

He laid her back on the furs, his body covering hers, and the weight of him was an anchor, a promise. His mouth traced down her throat, pausing at the pulse point where her heart beat wild and fast, then lower to her collarbone. Each kiss left a trail of fire in its wake. She arched into him, her hands finding the hem of his shirt, pulling it up until he broke away long enough to strip it off.

She looked at him then, really looked. The scars on his forearms, the muscles shifting beneath his skin, the way his gray eyes had gone dark with want. He was beautiful in a way that had nothing to do with softness, beautiful in the way the tower was beautiful, hard and functional and utterly consuming.

"I used to be afraid of you," she said, her voice barely a whisper. "Of what you could do to me."

"And now?"

"Now I'm afraid of what I'd do without you."

Something flickered in his eyes, raw and vulnerable, and then he was kissing her again, deeper this time. His hand slid down her stomach, fingers tracing the curve of her hip before dipping between her thighs. She was wet already, slick and ready, and she felt no shame in it. This was her body now. Her desire. Her choice.

He groaned when he felt how ready she was, his fingers sliding through her wetness, finding the swollen bud of her clit and circling it with a slow, deliberate pressure that made her hips buck off the furs. She cried out, her fingers clutching at the pelts beneath her, and he swallowed the sound with another kiss, his tongue mimicking the rhythm of his fingers until she was trembling beneath him.

"Please," she whispered, the word breaking apart as he pressed two fingers inside her, curling them against the spot that made her see stars. "Dirken, please."

"Tell me," he said, his voice a low rasp against her ear. "Tell me what you need."

"I need you inside me. I need to feel you."

He withdrew his fingers slowly, making her whimper at the loss, and then his hands were at her waist, tugging off the loose pants they had given her, baring her completely. She lay before him in the fading golden light, naked and unashamed, her chest rising and falling with quick breaths. His eyes raked over her, hot and hungry, and she watched as he stripped off his own clothes, revealing the full breadth of his body. The hard planes of his chest, the trail of dark hair below his navel, the thick length of his cock jutting forward, already rigid with need.

He settled between her thighs, the heat of him pressing against her entrance without pushing in yet. His mouth found her breast, tongue swirling over one nipple while his hand worked the other, pinching and rolling the sensitive peak until she was writhing beneath him. She could feel the blunt head of him notched at her opening, and she tried to roll her hips, tried to pull him in, but he held her still with a firm hand on her hip.

"Not yet," he murmured against her skin. "I want to feel you come apart first."

His mouth traveled lower, across her ribs, over the soft curve of her belly, until his breath was hot against her inner thigh. He pressed her legs wider apart and lowered his head, his tongue replacing his fingers, dragging through her slick folds with a long, slow stroke that made her cry out. He tasted her like she was water and he was dying of thirst, his tongue circling her clit with maddening precision before sucking it into his mouth.

Her back arched off the bed, her hands flying to his hair, gripping the short strands as pleasure built in waves inside her. He worked her relentlessly, two fingers sliding back inside her while his mouth continued its assault, curling and thrusting in a rhythm that matched the pulsing of his tongue. She could feel it building, that tight coil deep in her belly winding tighter and tighter with every stroke.

"Dirken," she gasped, her voice breaking. "I'm close. I'm so close."

He growled against her, the vibration sending her higher, and doubled his efforts, his fingers fucking her harder while his tongue flicked faster over her clit. The coil snapped, and she shattered, her orgasm crashing through her in a blinding wave that made her whole body seize and shake. She cried out his name, her thighs clamping around his head, and he worked her through it, drawing out every last tremor until she lay spent and trembling beneath him.

He kissed his way back up her body as the aftershocks faded, his mouth lingering on her stomach, between her breasts, along the column of her throat. She could taste herself on his lips when he finally kissed her mouth again, and the intimacy of it sent another pulse of heat through her still-sensitive body.

"You're mine," he said, the words a growl and a prayer. "Say it."

"I'm yours." The words came easily, naturally, like they had always been waiting on her tongue. "I'm yours, Dirken."

He positioned himself at her entrance and pushed inside slowly, inch by inch, and she gasped at the fullness of it, the way he stretched her, filled her. He was thick and hard and she could feel every ridge of him as he sank deeper, her body opening to accommodate him. He paused when he was fully inside, his forehead pressed to hers, his breath ragged.

"You feel so good," he breathed, his voice strained with the effort of holding still. "So tight. So perfect."

She rolled her hips, urging him to move, and he groaned, pulling back until only the tip of him remained inside her before thrusting forward again. The sensation was exquisite, the friction of him sliding against her still-sensitive walls sending sparks of pleasure through her with every stroke. He began a slow, deep rhythm that built heat in her core with every thrust, pulling almost all the way out before sinking back in to the hilt.

She wrapped her legs around his waist, pulling him deeper, and felt the pleasure coil again, already building toward a second peak. His mouth found her neck, her ear, whispering things she couldn't quite hear, words that blurred into sensation. She dug her nails into his shoulders, pulling him closer, needing more of him, needing all of him.

"Faster," she gasped, and he obeyed, his hips snapping forward with more force, driving into her harder. The sound of their bodies meeting filled the room, slick skin against skin, breath coming in ragged gasps. She could feel him hitting that spot deep inside her with every thrust, the pressure building with relentless precision.

"Come for me," he commanded, his voice rough. "Come on my cock, Casta. I want to feel it."

She came with a cry that was half sob, half exultation, her body clenching around him in rhythmic waves as the pleasure crashed through her. The intensity of it was overwhelming, her inner muscles milking him as he continued to thrust through her orgasm, prolonging it until she thought she might break apart entirely. He followed a moment later, his own release shuddering through him with a guttural groan muffled against her shoulder. She felt the hot pulse of him inside her, the way his body tensed and then released, and she held him close as the last tremors passed through them both.

They lay tangled together afterward, the furs soft beneath them, the window showing the first stars emerging in the darkening sky. Casta traced patterns on his chest, feeling his heartbeat slow beneath her fingers.

"Is this real?" she asked, the question barely audible.

Dirken's hand came up to cover hers, pressing it flat against his heart. "It's real. You're real. This is your life now."

She closed her eyes and let the truth of it settle into her bones. The tower was her home now. The medical bay was her domain. And this man, this hard and complicated man, was hers.

The old Casta was gone. In her place was someone new, someone who had found purpose in the strangest of places, who had learned to want what she had been given, who had discovered that captivity could feel like belonging.

She pressed a kiss to Dirken's chest and let herself drift toward sleep, the charm at her throat cool against her skin, the tower humming around her like a heartbeat.

She was home.
