Paradise Arrival

The shuttle pulled up to the resort entrance just as the sun dipped low over the ocean, painting everything in warm gold. Lori Brees stepped out first, her long wavy hair catching the breeze, and she took a slow breath of the salt-tinged air. The place looked exactly like the brochure: white sand stretching in both directions, palm trees swaying, and the main building gleaming with polished wood and glass. She turned to watch Adam climb out behind her, his athletic frame stretching after the long flight. He smiled at her, that familiar warm brown eyes crinkling, but there was already a hint of distance in it. They had come here to fix things, to revive what had gone quiet between them, yet the tension from the airport still lingered in the way he carried their bags without quite meeting her gaze.

Check-in went smoothly enough. The lobby smelled of fresh orchids and coconut, and the staff moved with quiet efficiency. Lori stood close to Adam at the desk, her slender fingers brushing his arm once, testing. He gave her a quick squeeze in return but then focused on the clerk, asking about the room upgrade they had booked months ago. She felt the small knot in her stomach tighten. This was supposed to be their reconnection, yet already the conversation felt practical instead of intimate.

They dropped their luggage in the suite, a spacious room with a wide balcony overlooking the water. Adam suggested they head straight to the welcome drinks before unpacking, and Lori agreed, hoping the change of scene might ease the stiffness between them. The outdoor terrace buzzed with arriving guests, glasses clinking and laughter rising over the sound of waves. She chose a seat at a small table near the railing while Adam went to fetch their cocktails. The tropical heat wrapped around her like a soft blanket, making her light sundress cling to her soft curves.

That was when Madison appeared. She moved through the crowd with easy confidence, her olive skin glowing under the string lights, long dark curls tumbling over one shoulder. The entertainer wore a simple white resort uniform that somehow looked anything but simple on her voluptuous frame. She paused at their table, her piercing green eyes landing first on Adam as he returned with the drinks, then shifting to Lori with a polite nod.

"Welcome to Paradise Bay," Madison said, her voice carrying a warm Spanish lilt that made the words roll like honey. "I am Madison, one of the resort hosts. If you need anything at all during your stay, you come find me." She extended a hand to Adam first, her fingers lingering a fraction longer than necessary on his. "And you are?"

Adam smiled, that easy grin Lori had fallen for years ago. "Adam Brees. This is my wife, Lori."

Madison turned her attention fully to him, tilting her head so her curls caught the light. "Adam. A strong name. You look like a man who knows how to enjoy himself on vacation." Her gaze flicked down his sun-kissed arms and back up, playful. "Tell me, what brings you both here? Romance? Adventure? Or a little of both?"

Lori watched the exchange from her seat, her hazel eyes narrowing slightly. Adam leaned in, responding with more animation than he had shown her all day. "A bit of both, I suppose. We needed to get away from work, shake things up." He laughed, and Madison laughed with him, the sound low and inviting. Lori felt a small spark of jealousy flare in her chest, followed by something warmer and more confusing that settled low in her belly. She sipped her drink to hide the reaction, the cool liquid doing little to settle the sudden awareness of how Adam stood a little straighter under the other woman's attention.

Madison stayed at their table longer than politeness required, asking Adam about his job, his hobbies, even teasing him about his choice of shirt. "That color brings out your eyes," she said, touching his sleeve lightly. Adam did not pull away. Instead he glanced at Lori as if checking in, but the glance was quick, almost distracted. Lori offered a small smile, her internal voice whispering that this was harmless, just resort staff being friendly. Yet the way Madison's green eyes held his, the subtle shift of her body toward him, stirred something deeper in Lori. A flicker of heat mixed with the sting of being momentarily overlooked.

The conversation turned to the resort activities, Madison describing the evening entertainment with vivid gestures that drew Adam's full focus. Lori listened quietly, processing the way her husband responded, his voice growing more enthusiastic with each suggestion. She felt the familiar dreamy pull of her own thoughts, wondering if this was the spark they had come looking for, even if it arrived in an unexpected form. The jealousy sat heavy, but beneath it pulsed a curious warmth, a question she was not yet ready to voice.

As the sun finally set and the terrace lights brightened, Madison excused herself with a lingering smile directed at Adam. "I hope to see you both at the welcome show later," she said, her tone carrying a hint of promise. Adam watched her walk away for a moment longer than necessary before turning back to Lori. "She seems nice," he offered, and Lori nodded, her fingers tightening around her glass.

Inside, her mind raced through the brief encounter, replaying the touch on his sleeve, the way his posture had changed. The tropical air felt thicker now, charged with possibilities she had not anticipated. She reached across the table and took his hand, determined to pull his attention back, even as the image of Madison's confident smile lingered. This vacation had only just begun, and already Lori sensed the ground shifting beneath their feet in ways that both unsettled and intrigued her.
