The First Session

Cruz Gil unlocked the door to their apartment with the same measured grace she used to close a sale at the boutique. The day had stretched long, the kind of day that left David's shoulders drawn tight beneath his tailored shirt. She watched him step inside ahead of her, his movements precise but weary, and felt the familiar pull of affection threaded with something sharper. She wanted him relaxed. She wanted him open. Both desires could serve the same end.

"You look exhausted," she said, her voice soft and precise as she set her keys in the silver dish by the door. "Come sit with me for a moment before you disappear into your study."

David turned, offering her that small, thoughtful smile he reserved for her alone. "Work ran late. The new exhibition needs another pass before the opening. I keep seeing things that should be adjusted."

Cruz crossed to him and placed her hand lightly on his forearm. "Then let me help you stop seeing them for a while."

She guided him toward the living room, where the low light from the standing lamp caught the velvet of the chaise. David hesitated only a second before lowering himself onto it. Cruz remained standing, studying the line of his neck and the way his fingers flexed against his knees.

"I've been thinking," she continued, "about these evenings. You come home carrying everything from the gallery, and I come home carrying the boutique. We both pretend we can simply set it down. What if we stopped pretending and gave ourselves a proper way to release it?"

David looked up at her. "What sort of way?"

"Relaxation sessions," she said. "Nothing elaborate. Just time after work where I help you let the day go. A massage, some quiet words. You know how steady my hands can be when I want them to be."

His brow furrowed, but not with refusal. "You mean like therapy?"

Cruz allowed herself a small laugh, warm and low. "No, darling. Like care. Like something we do together so the evenings stop feeling like extensions of the day. Would you try it with me? Tonight, even?"

David studied her face for a long moment. She could see the calculations behind his eyes, the curator weighing risk against reward. Then his shoulders eased a fraction. "All right. If it helps you too, I'm willing."

Relief and satisfaction moved through her in equal measure. "It will," she said. "Go into the bedroom and take off your shirt. Lie on your stomach. I'll be there in a moment."

She watched him rise and walk down the short hallway. Once he was out of sight, she drew a slow breath, centering herself. This was the first step. Not force, never force. Invitation, rhythm, and patience.

When she entered the bedroom, David lay on the bed as instructed, arms folded beneath his head. The sheets were cool and pale against his skin. Cruz removed her jacket, folded it neatly over the chair, and climbed onto the bed to straddle his hips. Her weight settled lightly. She poured a small amount of oil into her palms and rubbed them together until the scent of sandalwood and something darker rose between them.

"Close your eyes," she said, her voice already dropping into the lower register she would use. "Just feel the pressure. Nothing else needs your attention right now."

Her hands began at the base of his neck, thumbs pressing in slow circles. David exhaled. She worked outward along his shoulders, then down the long muscles of his back, each stroke deliberate and unhurried. After several minutes she let her voice match the rhythm of her hands.

"Breathe in," she murmured. "And let it out. Notice how the tension leaves with the breath. You don't have to hold it. You can let it go."

David made a quiet sound of agreement. She continued the massage, sliding her palms lower, then returning to his shoulders in long, gliding strokes. Her tone stayed even, almost musical.

"Each time I touch you like this, it becomes easier to let go. Easier to stop thinking and simply feel. The more you allow yourself to sink into the feeling, the more relaxed you become."

She paused at the base of his spine, pressing gently. "That's it. You're doing well. Surrender the weight of the day. Let it leave through my hands."

The word "surrender" left her lips softly, almost an afterthought, yet she repeated it on the next downward stroke. "Surrender. Let the muscles soften. Let the thoughts quiet. There is nothing you need to manage while my hands are on you."

David shifted slightly beneath her, but not in resistance. His breathing had already lengthened. Cruz kept the same steady pace, her voice threading through each movement.

"When I say the word 'release' in these sessions, your body will remember this feeling. It will know what to do. Release. Let everything else fall away."

She said the word again, quieter, then again, each time paired with a deeper press of her thumbs. David's shoulders had gone slack. She could feel the change beneath her palms, the way his body answered without his mind needing to direct it.

Cruz leaned forward slightly, her breath brushing the shell of his ear. "This is only the beginning. Each time we do this, it will feel more natural. You will look forward to letting go. You will trust that I know exactly how much you can carry and when it is time to set it down."

She continued the massage in silence for several more minutes, letting the suggestion settle. When she finally lifted her hands, David remained still, his face turned toward the pillow. She watched the slow rise and fall of his back and felt the first quiet thrill of progress.

"Stay like that a little longer," she said, voice returning to its usual warmth. "I'll bring you some water."

As she moved off the bed, she allowed herself one private thought: the trigger had been planted. Not deeply, not yet. But the first thread was in place, and David had agreed to every step that followed. She would weave the rest with the same patience, the same velvet certainty. He would learn to surrender because she had made it feel like the most natural thing in the world.
