The Gift
The reception was winding down. String lights flickered across the terrace as the last guests drifted toward the exits, their laughter growing distant against the sound of waves lapping the shore. Mirna leaned back in her chair, the silk of her wedding dress rustling against her skin. Her feet ached. Her cheeks hurt from smiling. Every muscle in her body felt loose, warm, utterly content.
Jonah reached across the table and laced his fingers through hers. His palm was calloused and familiar. "You ready to call it, Mrs. Vance?"
The sound of her new name sent a shiver through her chest. "Almost. I think I need to say goodbye to a few more people."
"You've said goodbye to everyone twice."
"I know. But it feels rude to just disappear."
He squeezed her hand and let go, tilting his head toward the bar. "I'm getting one more drink. Want anything?"
"Water. Please."
She watched him walk away, taking in the broad set of his shoulders beneath the charcoal suit. Her husband. The word still felt new and electric in her mind. Three hours ago they had stood beneath a canopy of white flowers and promised each other forever. Now forever stretched out before them like the dark ocean beyond the terrace, vast, shimmering, full of possibility.
"You look like you're glowing."
She turned. Lewis settled into the chair beside her, long legs crossing at the ankle. He looked perfectly at ease despite the late hour, his dark curls slightly tousled, his linen shirt unbuttoned at the collar. He had been Jonah's best man for a decade, the kind of friend who showed up at three in the morning with beer and bad movies. Mirna had always liked him. He was calm in a way that made the world feel slower.
"It's a good day," she said.
"It's a perfect day." He smiled, and something in his expression shifted, turning thoughtful. "Actually, I have something for you. Both of you. A wedding gift."
She blinked. "Lewis, you didn't have to get us anything. You already did the whole best man thing."
"This is different. It's not a toaster." He reached into his jacket and pulled out a small leather card case, holding it up between two fingers. "It's a session. A relaxation session. I've been practicing hypnotherapy for a few years now, and I thought you two might appreciate something to help you unwind after all the chaos."
Mirna tilted her head. "Hypnotherapy?"
"Nothing dramatic. Just guided relaxation. Deep breathing, visualization, a little mental reset. You've been planning this wedding for a year. Your brain deserves a vacation." He said it so casually, so matter of factly, that it didn't sound strange at all. "I have a private suite booked upstairs for the rest of the night. It's quiet. Comfortable. Twenty minutes, and you'll feel like you just had a week of sleep."
Jonah returned with two glasses, setting one in front of Mirna. "What's this about a suite?"
"Lewis's offering us a relaxation session. As a gift." She looked at her husband, searching his face for a reaction. "Hypnosis."
Jonah raised an eyebrow. "Like, stage hypnosis?"
Lewis laughed softly. "No. Nothing like that. No clucking like chickens. It's clinical. Therapeutic. I use it to help people with anxiety, insomnia, stress. You two are the most stressed people I know right now, even if you don't feel it yet."
Jonah took a sip of his drink and considered. "You've done this before? For real?"
"Dozens of times. I'm certified. You can check my credentials if you want." He held up his phone, already pulling up a digital certificate. "It's completely safe. You stay in control the entire time. You can't get stuck. You can't be made to do anything you don't want to do."
Mirna felt curiosity flicker through her. She had always been a little fascinated by the idea of hypnosis, the way the mind could be guided into such a soft, receptive state. And she was tired. Deep in her bones tired. The wedding had been beautiful but exhausting, and the thought of sinking into something quiet and restful sounded almost unbearably appealing.
"I'm in," she said.
Jonah looked at her, surprised. "Really?"
"Why not? It's free. It's private. And I trust Lewis." She held his gaze. "Don't you?"
He hesitated, then shrugged. "Yeah. I trust him. Okay. Let's do it."
Lewis stood, smoothing his shirt. "Great. Follow me."
The suite was on the fourth floor, at the end of a long hallway lined with soft sconces. Lewis opened the door and gestured them inside. The room was spacious and dimly lit, with floor to ceiling windows that looked out over the dark ocean. Two armchairs faced each other near the window, and a plush sofa sat against the far wall. The air smelled faintly of lavender and clean linen.
"Take a seat wherever you're comfortable," Lewis said, closing the door behind them. "The chairs are good for this. They recline."
Mirna chose the left chair, sinking into the cushions. The fabric was cool against her bare arms. Jonah took the right. Lewis pulled up a low ottoman and sat across from them, his posture relaxed, his hands resting on his knees.
"I'm going to start with a simple breathing exercise," he said. "Nothing complicated. Just follow my voice. Let your eyes rest on something soft. The wall. The window. My face, if you want."
Mirna let her gaze settle on the curve of his shoulder. The linen shirt draped loosely there, and she could see the faint outline of muscle beneath. His voice was low and even, a smooth baritone that seemed to fill the room without effort.
"Breathe in through your nose. Hold it for a count of four. Now out through your mouth. Slow. Easy. Let the breath carry away the tension."
She followed along, feeling her chest rise and fall. The second breath was deeper. The third one made her eyelids feel heavy.
"That's good. You're doing perfectly. Now I want you to imagine a warm light at the top of your head. A soft, golden light. It feels like gentle heat. Like sunlight on your skin."
She could see it. The light was warm and pleasant, spreading down across her forehead, relaxing the muscles there. A small sigh escaped her lips.
"The light is moving down now. Over your eyes. Your cheeks. Your jaw. Feel how soft everything becomes. How easy it is to just let go."
Her jaw slackened. Her lips parted slightly. She heard Jonah's breathing slow beside her, matching her rhythm. The light moved lower, and she felt it pool in her throat, then drift down across her collarbones. The warmth seeped through the thin fabric of her dress, spreading across the swell of her breasts.
"Down your neck. Over your shoulders. The light is melting away every knot, every tight spot. Your arms are getting heavy. Your hands are relaxing. Your fingers are letting go."
She felt her hands uncurl against the armrests. The world was growing distant, wrapped in a soft haze. Lewis's voice was the only clear thing, a thread she could follow into the warmth. The golden light moved lower still, across her stomach, her hips. She felt heat gather between her thighs, subtle and unexpected, like the first blush of arousal. It didn't startle her. It simply existed, part of the warmth, part of the letting go.
"Your chest is relaxing. Your stomach. Your hips. All the way down your legs to the tips of your toes. Every part of you is soft and calm and safe."
She was floating. The chair held her like a cloud. She could still hear the ocean outside, but it felt far away, like a lullaby. The warmth between her legs pulsed gently, a slow rhythm that matched her breathing. She didn't resist it. She couldn't imagine resisting anything right now.
"You are in a very peaceful state now. A state of deep relaxation. Your body is resting. Your mind is open and clear. You can hear me clearly, and you will continue to hear me clearly, but everything else can fade into the background."
She felt a smile tug at her lips. It felt good. Better than good. It felt like surrender.
"I'm going to give you a few simple suggestions now. Suggestions that will help you relax even more deeply in the future. You don't need to do anything. Just let the words sink in."
His voice dropped slightly, becoming softer, more intimate. It felt closer now, as though he were speaking directly into her ear.
"Whenever you hear me say the word 'deeper,' you will feel yourself sink into an even more relaxed state. Twice as relaxed as you are right now. Your mind will open wider. Your body will let go completely. It will feel natural and wonderful. Say it with me now. Deeper."
She whispered it. "Deeper."
The word pulled her down like a gentle current. She felt herself sink further into the chair, into the warmth, into the sound of his voice. The heat between her thighs intensified, spreading upward through her belly. Her nipples tightened against the silk of her dress, and she was distantly aware of the sensation, aware of how good it felt to simply let her body respond without thought or judgment.
"Good. Very good. And whenever you hear me say the word 'awake,' you will come back to full alertness. Refreshed. Energized. Remembering everything clearly. Say it. Awake."
"Awake." The word felt lighter, brighter.
"Perfect. Now I want to give you one more suggestion. A very simple one. It will help you get the most out of any future sessions."
He paused. The silence stretched, soft and expectant.
"Your mind is naturally curious. Naturally open. You enjoy learning new things. You enjoy exploring new experiences. And you trust me. You trust that I will only guide you toward things that are good for you. That feel right for you. That you truly want."
The words settled into her like seeds into warm soil. She felt them take root, felt the truth of them bloom in her chest. The arousal was steady now, a low hum beneath her skin, and it felt natural. Right. Part of the experience.
"When I speak to you in this way, when you are in this relaxed state, your mind will be more receptive. More open. You will find it easy to accept suggestions that align with your deepest desires. And you will enjoy that openness. It will feel natural. Right. Like coming home."
She nodded slightly. Or she thought she did. It was hard to tell where her body ended and the warmth began. The silk of her dress shifted against her skin with each breath, brushing her nipples, sliding between her thighs where the fabric bunched. Every small movement sent a ripple of pleasure through her, and she let it happen, let it build, let it pool in the soft dark place behind her thoughts where nothing mattered but his voice.
"You may notice sensations in your body. Warmth. Pleasure. That is perfectly natural. Your body is releasing tension in its own way. Let it. Enjoy it. There is no need to be embarrassed. There is no need to hide. You are safe here."
The words washed over her like warm water. She felt her thighs relax further apart, felt the fabric of her dress shift against the damp silk of her underwear. A soft sound escaped her throat. Beside her, Jonah's breathing was deep and steady, lost in his own descent. She was dimly aware of him, but the awareness was distant, unimportant.
"One last thing. You will not remember this suggestion consciously. It will remain in the background of your mind, guiding you gently. But you will feel its effects. You will feel more curious. More open. More willing to trust."
He let the silence hold for a long moment. Mirna's body hummed with warmth and want, and she floated in it, unashamed, unafraid.
"Now I'm going to count from one to five. When I reach five, you will come back to full awareness. You will feel rested, clear, and happy. The sensations in your body will fade gently, leaving you refreshed and comfortable. One. Coming back now. Two. Feeling the room around you. Three. Your body is waking up. Four. Your eyes are starting to open. Five. Fully awake."
Mirna blinked. The room swam into focus. The lavender smell was still there. The ocean sound was closer now, clearer. She felt amazing. Lighter than she had in months. Her limbs were loose and warm, and her mind felt like a freshly made bed. The arousal was still there, a faint echo of itself, a pleasant ache low in her belly. She shifted in her chair, pressing her thighs together, and felt the wet silk between them. A flush crept up her neck.
She turned to Jonah. He was stretching his neck, blinking slowly, a dazed smile on his face.
"Whoa," he said. "That was..."
"Incredible," she finished.
Lewis smiled, standing smoothly. "Glad you enjoyed it. The effects will last for a while. You'll probably sleep better tonight than you have in weeks."
Mirna stood, feeling the floor solid beneath her feet. She felt steady. Grounded. But there was something else too, a faint hum beneath her skin. A sense of anticipation she couldn't quite name. Her body felt alive in ways it hadn't before the session, every nerve ending awake and singing.
"Thank you," she said. "Really. That was the best gift."
Lewis met her eyes. His gaze was warm and calm and held hers for a beat longer than necessary. She felt something pass between them, a current of recognition, of understanding. Then it was gone.
"You're very welcome, Mirna. I'm glad you trusted me."
She walked with Jonah to the door, her hand in his. As they stepped into the hallway, she glanced back. Lewis was standing by the window, looking out at the ocean, his silhouette dark against the shimmering water.
She felt a flicker of something. Curiosity, maybe. Or anticipation. Her thighs pressed together as she walked, the damp silk a secret reminder of how deeply she had let go.
She pushed it aside and followed her husband to their room, the word deeper echoing somewhere in the back of her mind, waiting.
