Brian Coldway adjusted the boom mic for the third time, tilting his head to check the angle. The studio lights were warm against his face, the familiar hum of preamp equipment filling the small room with its quiet electrical heartbeat. Everything looked perfect. Everything sounded clean.
He still couldn't shake the feeling that something was about to change.
"You're obsessing again." Sissena's voice came from behind him, light and teasing. She stepped into the studio carrying two mugs of coffee, her fitted blouse pulling tight across her shoulders as she set them down on the mixing desk. "The gain is fine, Brian. You checked it twice already."
"Three times." He straightened his glasses and allowed himself a small smile. "Jeremy Lasseter has a reputation for being picky about audio quality. I want to make a good impression."
"He's a private investigator, not a sound engineer." Sissena settled into her chair and pulled her notes onto the desk between them. "But I get it. You want the podcast to sound professional."
"I want it to sound perfect." Brian sat down across from her and adjusted his own microphone. "This is our biggest guest yet. Three episodes with a former homicide detective turned PI? His cases are incredible. The audience is going to love this."
Sissena flipped through her notes, her brow furrowed in concentration. "He worked the Morrison case. The one with the body in the lake. And he was lead investigator on that missing person case that turned into a murder trial. The one where the husband did it."
"Right." Brian nodded. "That's the one. He's got a clearance rate that's almost unheard of for a private investigator. He's good at what he does."
"He sounds intimidating." Sissena looked up from her notes, her hazel eyes meeting his. "I hope I can keep up with the interview questions."
"You'll be fine, Sissena. You're the one who got him to agree to this. Your charm won him over."
She smiled at that, a warm genuine smile that made Brian's chest tighten with affection. This was their thing. Their shared project. Six years of marriage and two years of podcasting, building something together from their home studio. He loved the rhythm of it all. The preparation before a session and the long hours of editing that followed. Most of all, he loved how their voices blended together on playback.
The doorbell rang, right on schedule.
Brian felt his stomach tighten with anticipation. He pressed the talkback button and spoke into the studio intercom. "Come on in. We're set up in the back."
Footsteps echoed through the hallway. Then Jeremy Lasseter appeared in the doorway and the room seemed to shrink around him.
He was taller than Brian had expected. Broad shouldered, with a presence that filled the space without effort. His close cropped hair was neat, his tailored shirt a deep navy that made his skin look warm in the studio lights. He carried a leather messenger bag and moved with the easy confidence of someone who had walked into a hundred rooms and owned every one of them.
"Brian. Sissena." His voice was deep, smooth like dark coffee. He shook Brian's hand first, then Sissena's, holding her grip a beat longer than necessary. "Thanks for having me. I've heard good things about your show."
"We've heard good things about your work." Sissena's voice had shifted slightly. Warmer. More engaged. "The Morrison case alone would make a whole season."
Jeremy smiled, slow and easy. "That one has layers. Most of them do."
Brian gestured to the empty chair across from them. "Please, have a seat. We'll get you mic'd up and then we can start whenever you're ready."
The next twenty minutes were technical. Brian fitted Jeremy with a lapel mic, checked levels, adjusted the EQ to accommodate that deep resonant voice. He was meticulous, professional, focused on the details. But even as he worked, he noticed things. How Sissena leaned forward when Jeremy spoke. How she laughed at his dry observations about police procedure. The subtle drag of her gaze lingering on him when she thought Brian wasn't watching.
It was fine. It was normal. Guests were always charming. That was part of the show.
"Alright." Brian settled into his chair and pulled his headphones on. "Levels look good. We're recording in three, two, one."
The red light on the recorder blinked to life.
"Welcome back to Cold Case, Cold Truth. I'm your host, Sissena Coldway, and today we're joined by private investigator Jeremy Lasseter. Jeremy, thank you for being here."
"Thank you for having me, Sissena." His voice filled Brian's headphones, rich and intimate. "I've been looking forward to this."
The interview flowed smoothly. Jeremy was articulate, engaging, able to spin a story with natural ease. He described crime scenes with vivid detail, explained forensic evidence without condescension, and wove in personal anecdotes that made the cases feel human. Brian watched the waveforms dance across his screen, satisfied with the clean audio capture.
But he also noticed how Sissena's voice changed when she addressed Jeremy directly. The slight upward lilt at the end of her questions. The pauses that stretched a moment too long. She said his name with a softness that hadn't been there before, drawn out just a little.
"Jeremy, in the Morrison case, you were the one who noticed the discrepancy in the timeline. What tipped you off?"
"Patience, mostly. And paying attention to the details that don't fit." He paused, and Brian could hear the smile in his voice. "You'd be surprised what people reveal when you listen carefully."
Sissena laughed, a breathy sound that Brian felt in his chest. "I guess that's good advice for podcast hosts too."
"I think you already know how to listen, Sissena. I can tell."
Brian's fingers tightened on his notepad. He wrote down a timestamp for editing later and tried to focus on the technical aspects of the recording. The levels were perfect. The audio was clean. There was nothing to worry about.
The session lasted two hours. By the end, Brian's shoulders were tight from sitting in the same position, but he couldn't deny the satisfaction of a good recording. He stopped the recorder and pulled off his headphones.
"That was excellent. Really excellent. Thank you, Jeremy."
"My pleasure." Jeremy stood and stretched, his shirt pulling taut across his chest. "I'm looking forward to the next session. We have a lot to cover."
Sissena stood too, moving closer to him. "I'll walk you out. Brian, can you start backing up the files?"
"Sure." Brian watched them leave the studio together, Sissena's laughter trailing behind her. He turned back to his computer and began the familiar process of transferring files and creating backups. His hands moved automatically while his mind replayed the session.
He couldn't pinpoint exactly what felt different. The interview had gone well. The chemistry was good. That was what they wanted. Engaging guests made for better episodes.
But something itched at the back of his mind.
Sissena returned ten minutes later, her cheeks flushed, her eyes bright. She moved differently, with a restless energy that Brian recognized from late nights when inspiration struck.
"That was a great session," she said, her voice slightly breathless. "I'm still wired."
"Me too." Brian closed the file transfer window. "Want to order dinner? I was thinking Thai."
She didn't answer. Instead, she crossed the room and slid onto his lap, her arms wrapping around his neck. Her kiss was sudden, hungry, nothing like their usual comfortable peck after recording. This was demanding. This was different.
"Sissena." He pulled back, surprised. "What's gotten into you?"
"Nothing." She kissed him again, deeper this time. "Just want you. Right now."
His body responded before his mind could catch up. He stood, lifting her with him, and she wrapped her legs around his waist. They moved toward the bedroom in a clumsy tangle of limbs and desperate hands.
Her mouth found his again before they made it through the bedroom door. She pressed him against the wall in the hallway, her hands sliding under his shirt, nails raking up his sides. The urgency in her touch was electric. Different. She kissed him like she was trying to pull something out of him.
"Sissena," he breathed against his lips. "Let me at least close the door."
She laughed, low and throaty, and released him just long enough for him to kick the door shut. Then her hands were on him again, tugging at his belt while he fumbled with the buttons of her blouse. His fingers felt suddenly clumsy while hers moved with purpose.
She pushed him onto the bed. He fell back against the comforter and she climbed over him, straddling his hips, her blouse hanging open. The studio lights had left a flush across her collarbone that hadn't faded. Her hazel eyes were dark, dilated, focused on him with an intensity he couldn't remember seeing before.
"I want you so bad right now," she whispered. She ground her hips against him and he groaned at the friction, at the heat of her through the thin fabric between them.
He reached for her, wanting to slow things down, wanting to find the rhythm they usually shared. But she caught his hands and pinned them above his head, leaning down to drag her tongue along his jawline, down the column of his throat.
"Let me," she said. "Just let me."
He surrendered. Her mouth traveled lower, tracing a path down his chest, her tongue circling his nipple before her teeth grazed it. He arched into her touch, his hands fisting in the sheets. She knew exactly what he liked, exactly where to touch him, but tonight she was taking her time. Building something. Stretching it out.
She unbuttoned his jeans and slid them down his hips, then hooked her fingers in his underwear and pulled them off. He lay naked beneath her while she remained half dressed, her blouse open, her skirt still on. The imbalance of it made his pulse quicken.
"You're beautiful, Brian." She said it like she was reminding herself.
Then her hand wrapped around him and he forgot everything else. She stroked him slowly at first, her grip firm and deliberate, her thumb tracing circles over the tip. He watched her face as she worked, the concentration in her expression, the way her lower lip caught between her teeth. She was somewhere else. Not entirely with him.
"Sissena." He reached for her. "Come here."
"In a minute." She shifted lower on the bed and then her mouth replaced her hand, hot and wet and relentless. His hips bucked off the mattress and he grabbed a fistful of her hair, not to guide her but to anchor himself. She took him deeper, her throat constricting around him, and he felt the orgasm building at the base of his spine.
"Stop. Sissena, stop. I want to be inside you."
She pulled back, her lips swollen and glistening, and looked up at him with those dark, distant eyes. Then she sat up and reached for the hem of her skirt, sliding it off along with her underwear. She was wet. He could see it on her thighs, could smell the musk of her arousal thick in the air.
She straddled him again and reached between them to guide him inside her. The first inch made them both gasp. She sank down slowly, taking him in inch by inch, her inner walls gripping him like a fist. When she had taken all of him, she paused, her head thrown back, her chest heaving.
"God, I needed this," she breathed.
She started to move. Not their usual rhythm. Something harder. More urgent. She rode him with a desperation that felt almost performative, her moans louder than he'd ever heard them, her hands braced against his chest. He grabbed her hips and thrust up to meet her, trying to match her pace, but she was ahead of him. Always ahead of him tonight.
He sat up and wrapped his arms around her, pulling her close, changing the angle. She gasped and clutched at his shoulders, her nails digging into his skin. He kissed her neck, her collarbone, the swell of her breasts above her open blouse. She was close. He could feel it in the trembling of her thighs, the erratic rhythm of her breathing.
"Come for me, Sissena. Come on."
She cried out, and his name tore from her lips in a voice he didn't recognize. It was raw, primal, almost anguished. Her body convulsed around him, clenching and releasing in waves that pulled him over the edge with her. He buried himself deep inside her and let go, his own release crashing through him like a breaker against a seawall.
They stayed like that for a long moment, tangled together, sweat cooling on their skin. He could feel her heart hammering against his chest. Or maybe that was his own.
Afterward, they lay tangled together, her head on his chest. The silence stretched between them.
"That was intense," Brian said finally.
Sissena's hand traced patterns on his stomach. "Good intense?"
"Yeah. Good intense." He paused. "You were different tonight."
She was quiet for a moment. Then: "I think it's the adrenaline. From the interview. You know how it gets after a good session."
"Right." He nodded, even though she couldn't see it. "Adrenaline."
But as he lay there, listening to her breathing slow into sleep, he replayed the sounds of her moans in his head. The rise and fall of her voice. She had gasped his name like she was discovering it for the first time.
He pushed the thought away. It was just adrenaline. That was all.
He closed his eyes and tried to sleep, but the waveforms kept dancing behind his eyelids.
